Its not an unfair generalization. A majority of kinkos employees are security unaware. As a corollary, even CEOs making zillions aren't all brilliant. some of them are dumber than a bag of hammers.
You're being too harsh on Kinko's users. Anyone who has worked for BigInternationalCompany will tell you that most users dont leave their terminals locked. My company just started automatically locking user terminals last week. Managers and Directors left their PCs unlocked. Anyone could download a keylogger from the internet and grab passwords. The managers will continue to use ssh and think they are secure.
Funny you should say that. Pick up the video for the Danny Devito/Gregory Peck movie "Other people's money". Danny Devito's character speaks fluent Japanese. Not surprisingly, this movie was made in the "Japan is going to take over the US" days.
worry about paying for nicities like health insurance.
Health insurance is not a benefit..health care is. In a LOT of countries, you can afford to pay for your own health care with what you make. If health care is as expensive as it is in the US, health insurance becomes a benefit.
high CMM level means you are MORE likely to get good code...
A defined repeatable process will include code reviews, design reviews, coding standards etc..things that make it more likely to produce good code.
"Mozilla is dead."
Garbage. Its the best browser out as far as I can see right now.
Mozilla could be the best browser in the market and be dead in a short time. Where does it say that the best technology has to surive the vagaries of market forces.
Oracle's ad on the back of BusinessWeek(which usually compares Oracle to DB2) has a promise by Oracle to continue supporting Peoplesoft products.
This is the list of bullet points on the ad(i am summarizing some of the points and PS=peoplesoft)
1. We will not shutdown PeopleSoft products
2. You will not be forced to convert to Oracle E-Business suite applications
3...continue truly high quality, truly global customer service for peoplesoft product...
4. Extend support for PS products beyond the timeframe PS itself has committed to and into the next decade.
5. We will take no actions that reduce the functionality of your PS implementation.
6....will increase the value of your PS investment
7. If and only if you elect to do so, you may move to ORacle E-business suite via FREE module-for-module upgrades
It ends by "Dont be a victim of scare tactics".
The last para is interesting "Ask any customer from our RDB database acquisition from DEC. Nearly nine years later, we are still providing...suppport...rdb customers"...
I remember the DoD using spy planes to track the DC sniper. I remember what we went through when the sniper was killing people almost every other day. If they had this technology then, the people would be screaming for it to be used, privacy be damned.
I am sick and tired of books warning me that if i do a certain thing in a certain way, i will be tied down to a database. How many projects switch from Oracle to sybase? How many project managers expect the switch, if it is carried out, will be without any changes to the code? books on best practices and performance are good but some of the best practices evolve over time. What may be a critical performance bottleneck now may not be a problem in a few years. I am sure there was a performance "tip" at one time that recommended using 2 characters for storing the year to save on memory.
Verizon,
Sprint PCS and AT&T Wireless are ALL coming out
with versions of Direct Connect for their phones..
all modeled after Nextel's with a few
hundred mile range..
modelled after Nextel's direct connect service? Nextel's DC is almost instantaneous... Sprint/Verizon's prototypes have a delay of upto 10 seconds.
I am sure this has nothing to do with the fact that Verizons push to talk(or push wait talk) has a 7-8 second lag time whereas Nextels service is almost instantaneous(even coast to coast).
MS wasn't just "forced to include java". It was forced to include java as a penalty for its misdeeds. Forcing a person to stay behind bars is bad. Forcing a person to stay behind bars is GOOD if said person did something unlawful.
It's not that easy. A lot of cell phones will now be sold with rebates that require you to stay with the current carrier for a longer time than your service contract. Watch out for this little detail.
From this week's issue of BusinessWeek(subscription section)
A Cooler, Cheaper Way to Power Fuel Cells
Big commercial fuel cells are already
turning hydrogen into electricity in factories, office buildings, and power
plants around the country. Most are fed by so-called reformers -- mini chemical
plants that convert natural gas into hydrogen at around 2,000F. Such infernal
temperatures are O.K. in industrial settings, but it's hard to imagine those
reformers in homes.
Scientists at Georgia Institute of Technology have
found a way to cool things down to as low as 600F -- "closer to the heat in your
kitchen oven," says Zhong Lin Wang, a professor of materials science. It's done
with certain oxides of rare-earth elements such as cerium. When doped with iron,
the oxides efficiently transform methane into hydrogen, Wang's team reports in
the March issue of Advanced Materials.
What's more, the Georgia
Tech materials are self-renewing and work continuously. The oxides are recharged
by exposing them to water vapor, from which they absorb the oxygen that was used
in the conversion process. And despite their name, Wang's rare-earth oxides are
plentiful, so they should be cheaper than the catalysts used in high-temperature
units. In time, he hopes to slash the heat needed to levels so low that solar
power could drive the reformer. Meanwhile, fuel-cell makers are lining up to
fund the project. By Adam Aston

Still waiting for the obligatory reference to a beowulf cluster of this..

You think Oracle taking over PeopleSoft is going to make the product easier to use and obviate the need for 300$/hr consultants?
The people who usually decide between Oracle and PeopleSoft are usually the type you would associate with "evil" and "faceless".

Did i miss anything?
Why cant you build a keyboard with something like this. It would be more intuitive and easier on your wrists.

"Best practices" is common sense for 300$ an hr brought to you by an IBM consultant.
something bigger..like SCO's code in linux?
It's not for everyone. It's instantaneous..no dialing up. You can DC in groups.

Because they signed a contract saying they would do so?
Translation: Verizon has the most money to spend on lawyers and lobbyists.

I didnt really get what RMS said...but if RMS said it, it must mean something profound.
