    - Switches, seeing them as regular ethernet multicasts, will forward them just fine, though switches (as in, a multi-port ethernet bridge) will never forward ANY traffic to "other networks"

Why start trying to take advantage of their Netscape resources now, after 7 years?

If, by "bundled", you mean "install the Netscape browser as one of many, many unasked for applications when installing the AOL software", I guess I can see that.

If you mean "use it as the integrated browser inside the AOL software", they can't do that. As part of the settlement of the Netscape lawsuit with Microsoft (which mearked the death knell for 95% of the remaining "Netscape", as it was no longer needed to continue the lawsuit), AOL received $750million, and in return signed on to use *only* IE inside their software for 7 years. Mozilla was the internal name for the product being worked on by Mosaic Communications Corporation, as the sequel to Mosaic (it was bigger, more powerful, etc). The browser was eventually renamed (externally) to "Netscape", as was the company.

The endearing "Mozilla" name continued to be used internally, and was the basis of the original firebreathing dragon logos that appeared long before the Mozilla codebase was open sourced (which happened years before AOL shut down most of the remainder of their Netscape division and started the Mozilla Foundation).

I don't doubt that regardless of Firefox's emergence as a hotshot browser, Microsoft would not have been providing a browser in Longhorn with particularly new or innovative functionality, but it'd be odd for the marketing droids to allow IE to retain the "IE 6" moniker. Instead, I'd expect it to be named "IE NG" (next-generation) or something similar, after they'd revamped it with an Avalon interface (or something)?

I guess they just started rolling out the updates, and when I signed up on the "priority upgrade list" to get the upgrade sooner, I'm told that it may still be weeks.

Has anyone else gotten the newer software? Is there anything else new? I remember the version 3 to version 4 upgrade as being pretty big, perhaps going up 3 major revs will be better (I'm expecting versions 5 and 6 were just for different hardware than I have, though)?

If they do nothing else but eliminate some of the raw *wait time* when I'm managing the box ("Please Wait - this may take a minute" usually takes me anywhere from one to 10 minutes??), I'll be a happy camper.

"If they need more privileges, the IT guys watch them like a hawk until they're done." ...And hopefully your staff *is* there for them when they need other access, questions about other pieces of the environment, etc.

I've worked escalation support for a large storage vendor for a number of years, and while I completely understand (and agree with!) limiting vendor access, I find that IT departments tend to be *very* unresponsive when the vendor support folks need their help.

It's not exactly efficient, for example, when I have to wait 7 hours for logs to be uploaded, 5 hours for the "network guy" to respond to a page and fix the duplex mismatch he created that's causing 50% of packets from our systems to clients to be dropped, weeks for the system admin to stop piddling around and get Sun on the phone when we have valid interoperability issues (Sun won't talk to most other vendors except through the common customer), etc.

In the meantime, in my experience, the CIO tends to lambast the vendors for "poor responsiveness" and "terrible support" - though the smart ones eventually realize that the IT staff is shooting themselves in the foot, and do something about it.

IT departments that are responsive to vendors, on the other hand, are a breeze to work with, and issues are typically resolved many times faster.
