If you're an extremist (left or right), you should expect that eventually you will receive an extreme response.
Why?
Because that's exactly what we have been taught to expect since we came under Fascist control, that's why. "WE WILL CHASE DOWN THE TERRORISTS AND BRING THEM TO JUSTICE" ring a bell?
People not only expect this to happen most people want it to happen!
That's what sad about our country. Everyone wants to be "safe" and "protected from evil" yet they don't understand that they are supporting exactly the opposite when they side with actions like that.
I am absolutely shocked that the FBI doesn't already own and control the site to troll for anarchists. Everytime I see a site that preaches radicalism, my first reaction is "Fed".
He also doesn't sound much like an anarchist when he speaks like he does. If I were part of the community he supported I would be terribly disappointed in his actions:
I'm under court order not to speak about specifics and have my attorney trying to find out what the maximum penalty for disclosure really is. I hate to have to keep my mouth shut in areas where the Gestapo is involved, but I also have to weigh things against the overall security of flag and it's subdomains and also the wellbeing of my family.
So he believes in working within a system he doesn't believe should exist? While I understand that anarchists can have moral beliefs I just can't imagine that he would be so tolerant of the way the system is built to just put up with it.
I have called numerous friends nationwide, anarchists and otherwise whose opinions I respect and who I know will be honest and forthwith in their opinions to ask them how I should proceed. The unanimous consensus is that I comply with the wishes of the FBI and provide the IP addresses responsible. The only point of discussion, really, has been whether or not I should reveal the specific information in violation of two court orders.
Oh come on, maybe Dave is a wimpy anarchist but the rest of them too? Perhaps even the extreme leftists are swinging away from their roots and becoming more moderate.
They are proven murderers and automatons for the state who will blindly follow any order to kill or disrupt without question.
And yet he runs a site that harbors anarchists and he is doing everything the FBI says? Who's the automaton that is blindly following orders from a government agency which he believes should not exist?
It is by far the most agonizing decision I've been faced with in relation to my anarchist opinions.
"opinions", quite an interesting word choice. I would expect an individual running a site that harbors some subdomains that are being investigated by the FBI would hold more than just "opinions".

I just can't understand why someone running what is apparently a popular site would ever keep logs for more than a very short amount of time?
2. Comply with the wishes of the FBI, provide the IP addresses, and count on the fact that I will catch a lot of heat and hatred from my comrades in the anarchist movement worldwide.
I'd comply and say that there are no log files as they are immediately dumped to/dev/null.
Though it pains me to comply with the State in any manner, I have to choose option #2. The people who have foolishly compromised us all will shoulder the burden for their selfish actions. Frankly folks, they know better - we all know better.
Running a website that is viewed as a "threat" to the government in which the servers reside should have taught the admin (Dave) to know better and not to keep logs of any kind past a short period of time (minutes?) so that a webstats program could be run and the data incorporated and then removed. I don't see why this wasn't followed. I mean my website only averages 1000 hits (not even unique visits) daily over a month and it takes webalizer about three seconds to do what it needs to do.
But, the real point is that I feel like a coward and traitor to my comrades, even in the face of what is essentially a coerced decision. I'm the last one who will criticize or disagree with any of you who want to deride me. I'm also aware that this will probably cause quite a few of you to lose faith in me, flag, and it's subdomains. This can't be avoided and it's something I weighed into my decision.
Oh it could have been avoided if the admin took the time to make sure that no such logs were being kept. They can only subpoena what physically exists.
Freedom of speech does not exist, don't try to test it. They will come bust down your door - for real - point a gun to your head and pull the trigger if you refuse to comply.
Someone that is so against government control and intrusion should have known that this inevitability would occur at some point. Why didn't they take the time to protect themselves especially when they (and/or their family) could be harmed by the very people they host discussions for who could become enraged by their actions?
As long as the data can be transferred quickly (no CD swapping) I don't need the hardware to last for decades if I can move the data over to another system without a problem before it fails. The whole point of digital data is so that it can be replicated and transfered rather than for the hardware to last forever.
The whole point of storing data on WORM media is to prove that the data remained unaltered during storage.
You want to be able to have an audit trail that shows any modifications (timestamps included) to the records. You also want to make sure that images that were stored were unaltered ("photoshopped"). You want to make sure that an exact copy of the information was stored and remains exact for the life of the media.
If it's not stored on write once media then that can't be guaranteed.
Would you like your digital-storage media to last 20 years, 25 years, 30 years, 35 years or 40 years? If you're an organization or government agency, the U.S. government and an optical-disc industry group would like you to answer that question in a quick survey.
I work in the records department of a two year tech college. We use document imaging hardware and software to store student files on WORM optical media permanently and then we destroy the physical paper files over time.
We expect that our digital media will far outlast what we have on other permanent storage mediums, such as microfiche, which go back to 1972. If the "antiquated" microfiche can hold up that long why not our records stored on the digital media?
We realize that no storage method is 100% foolproof (i.e. you can misfile microfiche, lose physical files, misplace pages, etc) but we have put a lot of faith into the setup we currently have. If time has a negative effect on both the originals and backups we could find ourselves reverting to tried and true methods used in years past.
It's mildly humorous to me that long term data integrity (i.e. "forever") is never mentioned when companies present you with all the benefits of a digital setup. The benefits of the system are great (such as easy access to student information at various sites without any reproduction necessary, security features, etc) but will our microfiche outlast our digital media? I may never know but currently, based on recent discussions about the degradation of digital media over time, it appears that it may.
I feel sorry for the poor bastards that would have to go back to storing and reproducing everything to and from microfiche if and when we find out that digital media might not have the necessary longevity we require.
While commonly referred to as a "defect," Sony says the off-colored pixel problem is common in all LCD screens. "A very small number of dark pixels or continuously lit pixels is normal for LCD screens, and is not a sign of a malfunction," a representative for Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) told GameSpot.
How many pixels are we talking? I have no problem with one or two dead pixels (depending on the screen size). I would think that for the size/resolution of the PSP that 1 or 2 would only be noticable and that would depend on what color they are permanently (white would likely be annoying on dark games).
I received 0 dead pixels for the first time in my life when I purchased a 17" LCD panel (I forgot which company as it's not in front of me at the moment). The second time I received 0 dead pixels was on my work computer's Dell 23" LCD. I would think that in this day and age, at that screen size, if I would end up w/0 dead pixels a PSP could too.
Excuse me? I'm not a leftie. Perhaps you should read my other post about being against the New Aged GOP and wanting to bring back the REAL REPUBLICAN PARTY.
Sorry but I can't side with either "majority" party these days. They both blow.
I think it is wrong for children to see that stuff. It is also wrong to blame the government for the immoral actions of the ratings hungry mass media. Please blame, CNN, NBC, CBS, ABC and FOX instead.
Now, see, that's where you are trolling. It's the job of the media outlets to give us the news in an unbiased format. They are there to show us exactly what is going on outside of our field of view.
So they are doing their jobs and not censoring the real news out there. The news is being created by the government who is fighting a war in two countries and killing people and torturing others.
Rather than just telling government to stay out of our private lives, we need to change the way we think about government and the state. Otherwise, every time it is in the public interest to suspend private rights (e.g. the Patriot Act), individuals will lose out.
I made it fairly clear how I feel about the distinction between how the government believes it should be in my sphere of influence and how I believe it should.
It shouldn't as it wasn't ever meant to be. Case closed.
We jail parents for giving alcohol, tobacco, drugs to their kids, let's just do the same with games/movies.
Alcohol, tobacco, and drugs are proven dangerous substances that cause cancer, death, etc. This has been proven in multiple credible and unbiased studies over many years.
The "effects" of video games has not (and likely will not) be proven by any unbiased research.
If it is and it somehow directly causes death and/or cancer/illness then we can start discussing putting parents away for exposing their children for it.
You seem to be forgetting that there was a period of ten years between the two events...
It's not up to politicians to determine the morality of music, video games, or any other communication. Politicians are always trying to get an angle on something to better their own political gain.
Their constituents shouldn't be admonished for "bad morals" because they have free thought while they strive to cheat, steal, lie, and sneak around to get higher up the political food chain.
Imagine that... Senator Clinton, the woman who stood by her morally correct husband while at the top of the US government who supported his second in command's wife's desire to mark "inappropriate" music as such, supporting "proper" moral behavior for the inhabitants of this "free" country.
"Children are playing a game that encourages them to have sex with prostitutes and then murder them," she said in a statement on the issue. "This is a silent epidemic of media desensitisation that teaches kids it's OK to diss people because they are a woman, they're a different colour or they're from a different place."
Hmmm, what about the US Government desensitizing these same children using the same television by killing and torturing real people during wars in Afghanistan and Iraq or announcing that the head of the US Government was getting his cock sucked by a cigar smoking slut who was married to the same woman who is so against immoral behavior being shown to children?
The parents are letting their children play GTA and they are letting them watch the news. It's up to the parents of these children to give them direction in life not Senator Clinton or anyone else.
I'd like someone to sit down the youngsters in our country and try to explain to them how killing or torturing someone in a war that was permitted under false pretenses is morally acceptable but allowing an incapacitated woman to pass away peacefully is not. Or how the President willed a young woman to suck him off and put a cigar in her vagina because he had the power to do so was still allowed to run this "moral" country after he was found guilty of lying?
Let's have our parents teach us the morals they believe not the mixed messages that the US Government is sending.
Please stay out of the personal lives of your constituents. We don't need you tell us how to live our lives to be as "moral" as all of you.
"We're here to give a face to people being hurt by illegal downloads," said Erin Enderlin, one of the songwriters. "When we don't get paid, we can't pay our rent."
Hey, I am all for supporting artists that support the free distribution of their music. You want to make money from me? Allow your fans to put your live shows up on the various torrent sites (etree, easytree, etc) and I'll take a listen and possibly buy your stuff. If you expect me to take the $10 risk and buy your stuff before getting a good chance of hearing a variety of your music on many different days I can't say I will support you.
I really can't stand the "if we don't get paid we can't pay rent thing." It always seems to me that you're trying to play the MPAA guilt trip thing. I just can't believe that you would do nothing but play music in an attempt to support yourself if you weren't 110% sure you could.
No matter what, if you use that tired rhetoric, I won't buy or listen to your stuff regardless of how it's distributed. Just keep that in mind.
But finding un-biased opinions is becoming increasingly difficult. While it is true that this information is available on the internet, most people stick to the sites they know and are comfortable with. Generally, that means that people visit sites that further confirm their existing opinions.
That's the burden of the individuals. At least the information is out there and available to research. By allowing a consolidated governmental body we will know that the information will also be governed and worthless.
WHOAAA!!! spam is not a matter of frea speach, but a matter of THEFT OF SERVICES AND RESSOURCES.
I never claimed it was. I claimed that if we start limiting communications over the Internet with stuff that is currently viewed as "negative" then it could grow to include communications that move freely now that aren't "negative".
"Countering spam is just one of many elements of protecting the Internet that include availability during emergencies and supporting public safety and law enforcement officials," Zhao wrote in December.
I'm sorry but the Internet shouldn't be limited in speech and this is exactly what could happen if some "governing body" takes over enforcement of Spam laws. Yeah, it would start as Spam but it would quickly move to other communications that aren't as negatively viewed by the public.
I am sticking to the belief that spam is something that should be handled by local groups not government authorities. We just had a discussion yesterday about people not contributing to their governments and instead expect their governments to do everything for them. Well, this is an unnecessary waste of time/money/energy that can be avoided if people take steps to protect themselves and their email.
The slippery slope starts like this remember.
One of the most important changes was the early stages, when the Internet started, when ICANN started in 1998. The purpose was to exclude governments (but that didn't work). People realize today that the governments worldwide have to play a role.
Who realizes that? I surely don't. China is taking a "role" governing their Internet connection to the world and what does it do? It attempts to limit the freedom of information because it knows that it is a possible negative influence on the longevity of its governmental system. I certainly don't want some other body telling me what I can and cannot see because it may negatively influence my views on it.
People say the Internet flourished because of the absence of government control. I do not agree with this view. I argue that in any country, if the government opposed Internet service, how do you get Internet service? If there are any Internet governance structure changes in the future, I think government rules will be more important and more respected.
And when there is direct government control how do you get it? Through the filters that are put in place. The Internet is the one place where you can still dig through millions of different opinions to form your own rather than being fed the same stale bullshit that your government wants you to hear.
Do not fall for their promises of freedom from spam. It will do nothing but erode further the real freedoms that the Internet has created for the global community.
Well, I just placed my call and was directed to a supervisor without any real prompting for one.
I waited on hold for about 5 minutes and spoke with an individual that apologized and told me nothing was on my account from the last time I called to complain about this. He did say that he has forwarded on several other complaints about this issue and will be forwarding mine as well.
He stated, "I know for a fact that this will be rolling out and there's nothing I can do for you about it."
I told him be forewarned that the minute I get one I will be cancelling Tivo service and going to a free software solution such as MythTV. I pay for the ease of use to eliminate ads in my TV viewing, not add more.
He again apologized and I ended the call with a thank you.
They say they're barely keeping afloat, yet how can they have screwed up so badly like this? I mean, they have a monthly fee you have to pay for the service right? That's income generated on a monthly basis...and new subscribers etc etc. And let's face it, the equipment can't be all that expensive (for them).
When Slashdot first posted a story about this a couple months ago I spent some time and called up Tivo's customer service department. I explained to them my displeasure with their future plans to include this in my "service". The representative had no idea what I was talking about and I was sent to their supervisor who again claimed not to know anything about what I was talking about.
Now, I worked in a call center and I know that companies like to keep those that need to know important information in the dark so that they can't tell customers anything but I feel that I was duped now that it is actually happening.
I pay for my monthly service so that I do not have to see commercials. I certainly don't want to see others while I am fast forwarding through ones I paid to remove.
I love my Tivo but I expect that they will remedy this problem quickly (especially after I make yet another phone call after I'm done w/this) or they will be losing further revenue and free advertising as I won't post how I enjoy my work-free Tivo over a MythTV/Freevo solution.
3. Experienced enough to think they know it all. Usually focuses on a specific specaialty such as a single OS and/or hardware platform. Brash and certian, preachy. 4. Humbled. Admits they can't know it all. Tends to go into too many details when asked for advice. 5. Guru. Admits they can't know it all. Knows how long it would take to learn what they don't know. Gives short answers or does not answer.
And oh how wrong you are... I don't know anything and I don't pretend to know anything. I know a small part of the possible world and I consistently preach that I only know that small piece.
You, OTOH, I place into what I call the asshole realm. The one where you try to diagnose the status in the world for others. The one where you think you can decipher the meaning and direction of another person's life with what they post to Slashdot on a given day.
Considering that I use various OSs daily including Windows, Linux, and MacOS I would have to say that I have no specialty. I especially know very little about Windows (and I have publically stated that Windows makes it very difficult TO KNOW what is going on w/your machine).
I like to believe I know what's going on w/Linux as it lets me know the intricate details of the booting, configuration, and general operation of itself and many other programs through detailed logs.
I know I know nothing about the Mac. I don't need to. It kinda just works for now. I also don't try to push it too much though. Maybe I'll sit down and tinker with it when I have some time.
Now, for you, I suggest you do some real research into me. Possible google for my posts and read over them (including my thoughts on Windows and how it doesn't let you know anything, my thoughts on how Linux is not ready for the desktop, etc). Maybe then you will better be able to classify me.
Until then I suggest you sit back, sign up for an account, and post under that so that I can research your inadqueate posts and troll on them.
Yeah, I never worked in a call center for tech support with and endless stream of callers that say my "Internet is broken" when they really mean that home.excite.com changed to www.attbi.com.
I never dealt with family members that said that WinME is the best Windows OS to ever be created and AdAware isn't a valid piece of software and proceeded to remove it and the firewall installed.
You're 100% right... Oh wait, no you're not. Perhaps you should read through some of my history. Just b/c people out there aren't educated does not mean they shouldn't take the time to be.
Well, it wasn't, but I'll respond to you here instead:
This is not a case of apples to oranges. He is obviously concerned about people sniffing on the network (the wireless network is not his). If he was so concerned about his privacy he would be taking steps to stop privacy intrusions which would include encrypted tunnels for everything.
He doesn't do any of that thus he doesn't understand anything past WEP/MAC filtering (even if he fully understands that). If he was so concerned about his privacy he would turn off the ping/pong from Toshiba. He would likely run a software firewall and stop all incoming and outgoing crap.
He doesn't care about privacy. He cares about talking in general IT buzzspeak.
If you're an extremist (left or right), you should expect that eventually you will receive an extreme response.

Please stay out of the personal lives of your constituents. We don't need you tell us how to live our lives to be as "moral" as all of you.
Translation: I saw other "cooler" people using them, so I figured I'd better hurry up and buy one.
Replace cooler with "makes more money so they can afford one."
Thanks for trolling.
