    I'm picturing a service, we'll call it Rent-A-Lion, where in you hire the services of a lion for the afternoon. Now, say you have a boss who's a prick or you just know an asshole who needs a good eatin', you just park this lion in their house and wait.

    Brilliant I tell you. As an added bonus, there's always the possibility that the lion would eat the evidence.

    You don't even know the half of it.

    I work at a dental office. Several of them in fact. We are forced to charge our patients different based on who their insurance carrier is.

    Just think on that a moment.

    We have 10k+ patients. And there are unique insurance plans for just about every family. Fortunately, there are only about 20 fee schedules we have to keep track of. However, my point is, a root canal is ~400 bucks normally. However, under Delta I think it's 350. Under Etna it's 600, blah blah blah. And we are contractually obligated to charge these prices for these procedures.

    So no, that the watch would cost differently based on who your provider is makes perfect sense to someone in the industry. And yes, we all know it's fucked up, but that's the insurance industry for you.

    I'm not a professional webdesigner, but I think they're allowed to start acting like professionals when they started getting treated as such...

    Respect is earned, not given. My job ( net admin, programmer ) is low on the respect totem as well. If shit works, I look like I'm slacking off, if it breaks I obviously wasn't doing my job. Does that mean I get to whine how no one respects me and do a half ass job of it?

    No. It means I do my best work to satisfy my own sense of pride.

    After years of hard work and learning, I finally am in a position where I do get respected for my work. But it was because I worked hard to earn it.

    I can control QoS up to my link out on either side. Beyond that, you are right, it's up to the internet in general.

    However, I did everything I could. Which is the important thing here.

    Actually, it did. Given the bandwidth, people would have been foolish to use it, but it did support it.

    Not really. We just have a lot of management people who don't care. If your boss said he didn't care if the sql app worked or not, you would not have spent a lot of time getting it to work, would you?

    Yes. Would I be wasting my time? Maybe, maybe not. Given the number of times people have given me one set of specs then expected everything on top of it has taught me to go the extra mile and do everything in my power to do what they want, not necessarily what they tell me.

    In my book, this is professionalism. Anticipating, to the best of my ability, all the situations and planning for it. I can't tell you how often that has saved my ass, or made me look really really good in front of my bosses.

    Why is it web designers aren't expected to achieve the same level of competency as any other professional? All I ever hear is how hard it would be to make a site cross compatible.

    Well, you know what? Tough shit. Life's hard all around. Let me tell you some day about the vpn solution I had to implement across a dialup link. Oh yeah, and it had to support a full sql application. Any other professional is expected to show, you know, *professionalism* in their field.

    Not web designers tho. They expect to be coddled, and allowed to half ass it.

    Inkjet printers are a scam, played on a public that doesn't know any better.

    As near as I can figure, you are still missing the point. No where that I could find in the ruling was there mention about the regulation being ok because it's "in uniform" ( which would indeed be ok ).

    No, the regulation simply states:

    REGULATIONS, Paragraph 4: While on duty you must NOT . . . fraternize on duty or off duty, date or become overly friendly with the client's employees or with co-employees

    And no where is there mention otherwise. Any mention referring to in uniform that I could find were regarding the solicitation and distribution of literature.

    Seriously, they were sitting on the data for a reason. And as this data doesn't affect anybody on a day to day basis, I can see why they'd want to hold off on the announcement until they could give real numbers.

    This is of course assuming the story isn't bullshit. I seem to remember one scientist saying he had a bet with another that he'd discover a 10th planet by the end of last year.

    I'll try to cover some of your more coherent points ( admittingly, some of it will be guess work ).

    Yes, the $50 is for the game. It's for all the design and such. Why would you drop 50 bucks on something like world of warcraft, and expect a single player version. This makes no sense.

    15 is mostly for server maint. Tell me, do you have any idea how much an oracle database costs? How about some custom programming on said database? How about a team of oracle certified engineers you have to keep on hand...365 24/7? And I'm not even going to get into how much the hardware likely costs.

    Yes, they are probably making a profit on the monthly fees. Is that a bad thing? Making money off of doing work is a good thing. They are charging what the market allows. If the market didn't like it, they couldn't charge it.

    And why, why, would you buy a game like WoW with the expectation of being able to use it without paying the monthly fee? That's like getting upset about having to buy gas for your car.

    So again, I'm not flaming you, I am mocking you. Flaming you would look something like this:

    Your intellect probably won't be able to handle this, and it's my sincere hope that your head pops when you read it, but you are dramatically wrong in this and, likely, most things you attempt in life. Were I you, I would find some rat poison and make it clean. But again, here, you would probably fuck something up and make a mess of it.

    See the difference?

    Oh, to dream the dream, eh? You certainly have a funny view on how economics work. How long do you think blizz spent writing WoW? How many programers, graphic designers, musicians, ect..do you suppose they had to pay?

    The materials may have cost 5 bucks, but the effort behind the result is what you are paying for. And let's not forget the distributer takes a cut of that 50 as well.

    The 15 a month is for server maintence, which is a valid point of conflict given how poorly blizz has performed in this area.

    What's in your doctor's best interest? Unless you have known and been going to the same doctor for years, that's a very real concern for most people.

    Is my dr prescribing this medication because he believes it's what I need, or because he gets kick backs from the pharmasudical[sp] companies? If the latter, then why does he have all those posters for the meds he just described on his operatory walls?

    No one is sacred anymore, and Drs have shown themselves to be just as corrupt as everyone else.

    Personally, someone could read my entire hard drive and it wouldn't bother me much. I don't keep sensitive information on my computer, because any computer connected to the internet should be considered insecure.
