...how many tracking devices was the "target" running so that the projectile could find it and hit it? I really don't think enemy missiles will do the equivalent of waving a banner and screaming "Hey defense system! I'm right here!"
what mundane thing will set the government off next? Should I expect a visit from the FBI because I bought Rice Crispies this week instead of the oatmeal I usually buy? Will they want to know why I buy more computer equipment than my neighbors? What deep insight could they possibly glean from this information? Should we all just accept the fact that everyone in the world is now a potential threat to the United States, including its own citizens?
What happened with SCO? SCO is pretty much done as a company exactly because they decided to do what you are implying Microsoft will do. Do you think IBM would just roll over because it's Microsoft "threatening" the open source community?
Eliminate competition how? Do you really think Red Hat, Mandriva, Ubuntu, etc. will just stop producing Linux distros because Microsoft made a deal with SUSE?
How is this going to impact software development on Linux? What can Microsoft sue developers for? Not working for a company? Writing software in their (or their parents) basements? When did that become patent infringement?
Assert what patent rights? Everyone keeps implying that all open source software infringes on some Microsoft patent or other. This whole line of reasoning is ridiculous. I don't even see why a WINE developer should be afraid. I'm sure the source for it has already been looked over by Microsoft. Why would they decide to sue now? And over what?
I distrust Microsoft about as much as any other/. reader but this article is just stupid. The author seems to be implying that because Microsoft has made an alliance with a Linux vendor they all of the sudden own all open source software ever created and can just sue people for patent infringement at will. What a crock.
People....CALM DOWN.
The world is not coming to an end. Microsoft is not coming to steal your children.
"The new management could take the axe to Microsoft's $6.6bn of wasteful research and development expenditure"
It's funny how some people see any R&D that doesn't result in a product release as "wasteful." How do these people expect technological progress to happen?
At what point will it become so difficult to do research in the US that all meaningful science is done in other countries?
Due to global trade agreements that enforce US IP laws in many foreign countries, how long will it be before no one in the world can do any meaningful research without being liable for patent infringment?
IVF is already legal in the United States. If this process does no harm to the embryo, what complaint could the right to life movement possibly have? It's not like the embryos are being cloned. Even this administration would have an impossible time passing a law based on the idea that a "soul" might be damaged.
Pretty much every media player for Linux supports the ipod. Amarok, Rhythmbox, Banshee, etc, etc. Not to mention gtkpod! AFAIK every mainstream distro compiles the proper support into the kernel for usb or firewire support as well as VFAT/HFS file system support. The ipod should be pretty much plug and play on any modern Linux distro.
At the very least the title of the article is misleading BS.
Give me a break. Ever since Fox News became popular liberals have acted as if all other sources of news media have ceased to exist.
New York Times Washington Post NPR CNN ABC CBS NBC BBC World News etc. etc.
No one is forcing the American public to watch Fox News. If you don't like Fox don't watch it. There are plenty of other well respected news outlets, some fairly liberally biased.
It would be nieve to beleive that only *Major* record labels are experiencing lost sales to piracy.
The idea that your average Kazaa luser is copying the new Radiohead or Strokes album off the net but going to a store or other legitimate retail outlet to buy the latest Matador, Touch & Go, Dischord, "insert indie label name here" band is misguided at best.
As far as I know BMI handles royalties for broadcast rights and things like "covers" and songwriting credits. It has nothing to do with sales of pre-recorded music which is what the RIAA claims is hurt by piracy. When you buy a cd from a major label band BMI doesn't see any money. They only benefit from the radio station you listen too playing a BMI artist's songs or the local kareoki bar patrons singing along to a recording. This has nothing to do with pre-recorded music or file sharing.
Nothing to see here...move along.
The main problem is that many applications written for Windows will only run if you are logged in as admin. Run As.... just doesn't work. I have a W2K machine that I only use for gaming. It only has an admin account because none of the games will run in a limited account using run as. For web browsing and email I use Linux on another machine. If the W2K box is compromised I'll just back up the game saves and reinstall but most users don't have that option.
Please also recall that the other members of the DKs
sued Jello for failure to pay back royalties and won. Because of this case Alternative Tenticles can no longer distribute the DKs albums and I think Cleopatra is the new distributor. For such an anti-corporate, class warrier he sure had no problem screwing his former band-mates out of money.............Kill your idols indeed.....
That would be so cool if monkeys flew out of the screen. Well.........the first time it would be.
It would get old having a room full of monkeys and my boss would probably be pissed.
Minix is a Unix clone just like Linux. Will Andrew S. Tanenbaum be next in line for SCO. People have been using his textbooks to teach operating system design for years. Where does the concept of "derivative" works end?
Isn't SCO supposed to reveal the infringing code to IBM next week? I think this press release is ment to bolster stock price against their lawsuit blowing up in the their faces later this week. But that could just be wishful thinking on my part.
that most of the people here crying about
the government taking their rights away
also support a ban on all firearms in the
US therefore negating there ability to rise
up against said government.
Sometimes I feel like voters would rather do away with the DNC and RNC and instead have multiple "issue" political parties. We could have the NRA party, Gun-control party, Abortion Rights party etc. etc. Voters only hear the one or two issues of interest and ignor the rest, usually with disasterous results.
I guess I'm not visiting the right sites (or am I?), but banner ads just don't bother me. Yes the occasional pop up at nytimes (which seems to get around firebirds popup blocker) is kind of annoying but regular banners? If they were all erased by this software the whitespace would just seem......weird. You have to be really sensitive to be affended by them in my opinion.
The only thing that bothers me is the whole doubleclick tracking you around the net w/ cookies thing but thats a whole other conversation.

FYI: Neilson and Soundscan merged. Its now Neilson-Soundscan. It happened about two years ago.

Well, they could just buy a Maxspeed Controller and a couple of Wyse terminals and get the same effect.

SCO going bankrupt and Darl being investigated
for stock manipulation.
That would make for a very merry christmas.

Now we just have to wait for the GNU implementation :)

Actually, I guess RMS wouldn't be too cool with
the DRM involved in iTunes
