  1. Deus Ex Music on Is Music More Lasting Than Graphics In Games? · · Score: 1

Deus ex, although creating a dark atmosphere with its monotonous graphics never was a pioneer in that domain. Playing an 80 hour game means there is a lot of the story that will evade from memory. Also, since it is a pc game, it wasn't immediately playable on windows xp. What is left after all those years is the music. Alexander Brandon himself described his work as emotional in an interview that. It truly stuck to my senses and which is why I made an audio cd out the synthesized music files that were on the cd (the only content easily accessed). Since memory is all about connections, every new area in the game had its own music theme which reminded me of those 2 hour long levels in a 3 minute song.

  2. Latest and Greatest on Will Intel Ship an x86-64bit Chip This Year? · · Score: 1

All the latest and greatest processors are already invented. It is only a question of the companies to wait for the right time to let it out onto the market as to maximize profit.

This is why I don't let the hype get to me. I rather praise the companies that give me the greatest price/performance ratio for a given time. If you can buy it, then it's not cutting edge.

  3. Law of the Cheapest on The Hidden Costs of Bargain Electronics · · Score: 4, Insightful

Those "hidden" costs (strange, it says made in china on it) exist on most of the electronic appliances we buy. Why should we start worrying now? Even if it had that "made in USA" sticker on it, u might still miss the little disclaimer that says "with parts from -insert poor countrie's name here-. So, even that's not certain.

I'm glad that digital stuff can reproduce media without any loss in quality due to hardware (compared to magnetic mediums).

I would go even as far as encouraging China's non proprietary video format which can be played on royalty-free hardware thus lowering the price even more.

Besides, all the big brand names in digital devices are Japanese. Isn't this outsourcing too?

  4. Idle Time on 75% of Network Connections Not From Browsers · · Score: 2, Insightful

Internet users spent an average of three hours and 37 minutes per month using Internet applications. A page like a slashdot article containing some comments takes me more time to read (no internet activity in between) than to download. So, even if they could sniff all our data usage, it would not reflect our real time usage because of differing idle times for each application.

  5. Return To Civilization on Laptop vs. Small Desktop: Best Bang Per Watt? · · Score: 2, Insightful

  6. Re:Future support? Driver updates? on The Return of S3 · · Score: 1

3 years ago I had to choose between a gf2mx400 and a kyro.

Benchmarks showed kyro's tiling technology to result in higher framerates with the then current games.

Nvidia's card was more popular at the time and had no fan (my computer was already loud enough).

I ended up getting the mx400 but it proved to be too slow for ut2003 and unplayable with Deus Ex: Invisible War because of the missing pixel shaders.

I am unsure if the Kyro has that technology. That card was at least advertised as a full fledged card (i.e. not a feature lacking gf2) and I suppose it would have done the trick.

I exchanged my faulty gf2mx400 since then for a GF4TI4200 which was a marketed as a performance card back then. I was lucky to have an understanding store clerk. Gladly, it maintains an average of 30 fps for the latest games excluding the bad coded DX2. Now, it's only my 1Ghz Athlon which is a bottleneck. I've grown accustomed to the slightly noisy fan.

My point here is that one should opt for the less popular brand if there is a choice between a similarly priced budget card and a newcomer's performance card.

  7. Might As Well Pirate on Quebec Cracks Down On Translated Videogames · · Score: 1

I have had the misfortune of buying a french translation of the game "No one lives forever 2".
I only realized this after the purchase.

The character voices were very bad and this game is usually praised for funny and original dialogues.

Also, the multiplayer part of the game required the new version to play with. There was no french version of the patch and it didn't install if you didn't have the english version. I had to search through a lot of forum posts to find a way around this limitation. The end result was a bunch of different language text.

If I had known this, I would have just taken the original version.

Now, if I can't get my next game in it's original language the moment it shows itself in every other province/country/continent, I will Not hesitate to download a pirated version.

This is especially true for FPS because some of them have excellent single player campaigns but not too interesting online play. People play with others on the internet for a while to get their money's worth and then quit. If there is any sort of delay for the translated version to see the light of day, you won't get to play with anyone!

Where are my moderator points when I need them...

Anyways, this guy actually went to two sites to prove his point! Count that people, the original article And an official reference.

If this becomes the trend, the slashdot effect will be a dominoe one (or virus-like for that matter) and the whole world will succumb to this american centralized site (troll, I know)...

Put that in Deus Ex 2 and you'll have yourself a conspiracy, hehe.

  10. False Sense Of Security: Not Necessarily Bad on SunnComm Reconsiders Lawsuit Threat · · Score: 1

    From the article:
"The worst thing in the world is a false sense of security."

Almost every method of copyright protection can be bypassed. I say, if it gives some record companies enough confidence that you won't pirate their stuff (i.e. p2p it), then it's better for the non-pirates! This will keep them off our backs and from adding another nuisance to legitimate backup purposes.

Just to be on the safe side (and prevent a heart attack when they tell you you're responsible for 10 million bucks in losses), don't publish such stuff. Let the information crawl its way through usenets until the source is no longer tracable!

  13. Franchis 'R' Us on Will Wright's Deal with Fox? · · Score: 0, Troll

I for one, am tired of the Sims franchise. It doesn't seem to want to die. One expansion pack after the other. You would think they'd get the message with the poor popularity of the sims online. Anyway, franchises are the best way to make a quick buck nowadays. Just slap a well known theme on a game or tv series (friends clones)and you are assured at least some kind of audience. Sigh, this proves it, people don't want anything new, just slight variations of the same thing.
