Maybe you could take a look at how it's done in other countries? The system in most democratic countries is better than the one in the US.
Here is an exemple used in many countries. Everyone votes for his favourite candidate. If none of the candidates gets more than 50% everybody votes for his favourite candidate of the two that were the most popular ones. Simple and fair.
Res publica is the opposite of private matters so it doesn't really say how the public matters are dealt with.
Anyway today a republic is the opposite of a monarchy. So altough The Democratic Republic of Germany might not have been democratic it sure was a republic - something the UK isn't.
It concerns me that as the country I live in tends to follow the trends set in the USA that that will start happening here.
I don't think it would happen in a normal country. You would need the american get-rich-quick court system. With the modest compensation you get elsewhere nobody would bother to be a dork for the rest of their lives.
It's making me ill to watch how easily the process is to abuse. But thank God, unless a MS steps in and ponies up the cash, it will eventually be over.
