further the divide between the rich and poor people.
cause poor people can't afford tax breaks, attorneys, or now, cheap power savers.

we just don't look and say, if we save money in one area, someone's gonna have to pick up the tab! it's the natural law of equilibriums, vacumns get filled, holes get poles, and the poor get poorer. forgive my mis spellings, but no mac rests beneath my fingertips

And what's the problem with digital delivery? It seems to be working for the porn industry...

What can I say that hasn't been said a million times before. This is yet another example of how closed door meetings determine the course of our society and how the rich and powerful control the interests of the entire earth.

This is something that rests uneasy in me, because I don't want to adopt a standard that fades. I don't want one of my favorite movies to be ONLY HD DVD and not Blu-Ray.

    And the worst part is,

Here we go with another round of re-mastering and reselling. Just like the record industry and archiving their vinyl library to CD, or the previous migration from VHS to DVD, here is ANOTHER round of $20-$50 gotta haves to line the pockets of the man.

    And the future will hold?

They will blame US again, when the reissues stop selling, they will blame internet traffic for the lack of sales, the industry is stabbing the same medium they MUST adopt to if they are to survive!

    So what can YOU do?

Force them to make a decision, instead of making all of us gamble on their indecisiveness! Don't be an early adopting sucker, even if pride and envy tug at your wallethand.

This is like going to war based on manufactured intelligence & opinion poll results.

wow, what a beautiful thing. to see that humanity can work together in something as simple as the furthering of knowledge

as having completed college 45 minutes ago, i can say, with no amount of pride, that research is a bitch when 90% of the sites want me to pay $30 for one stinking article that might not have what i need.

this is not freedom of information, this is consolidation of our resources into the hands of a few for personal gain.

    that sucks!!!

why am i reminded of the whole american ideology with this?

  13. Business OR Government != Efficiency on Broadband War & an Interactive Municipal Map · · Score: 2, Insightful
Hailing from northern california here, where a debate between caltrans and SBC left us without real broadband for five years or so. What was the problem? CalTrans was overcharging for laying fiber cable on a bridge by a couple million. Not that the money was a problem, it was getting pushed around by road workers that got SBC's panties all knotted. Five years for 300 ft of cable... good work 'public' utility companies. (if you think broadband isn't a public need at this point.. your problem)

So the point I'm trying to make? Farmers, oil companies, auto makers, pharmecuticals and utilities, as well as many others are in bed with the government. Our tax dollars pay for cheap produce, ridiculously low gas prices and much of the infrastructure upon which the Internet is based. Why should a few make millions off our tax dollars...
Oh wait, that's the way government works, take the lifeblood out of millions and hand it to a few for backscratching priveledges. Look at how war money is handled.

I think the bells are bitching because they don't like competition.

And like everyone else, they want a free ride... of the public.

    Bend over!

As far as what needs to be done? In the Information age & economy, easy access to the glut of information available is a basic human right, up there with power, water and housing. Oh wait. those arn't rights, we have to buy our power, water and housing, tying our very survival into the fluxuations of survival tickets and compensatory servitude...

the whims of your boss, funding, or the market could affect your LIFE. and here, in this supposedly free country of liberty & pursuit of happiness nonsense... WHAT RIGHT DO THEY HAVE THREATENING MY HOME, MY WATER, MY POWER, OR MY DSL!!!!

ALL OF WHICH ARE ESSENTIAL TO MY CONTINUED HAPPINESS.

    ahem. end of rant.

  15. When I went to Russia... on Bootlegged Music in Russia · · Score: 1

Hah! Having been to Russia and partook in their CD bazzars (held in front of a music store on a saturday, next to a cop shop, where I drunk vodka with metalhead teens). I'd have to say... DAMN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY! They sold recordings in Russia which

    a) were not available at all in the states
    b) out of print
    c) compilations! (Led Zep 1&2)

Now, there is a market demand here for music. Mine! I could spend $30 to get NiN:Demos and Remixes or $2 in a Russian Bazaar. For one, I am tired of paying exorbitant CD prices for complete crap. And I'm tired of the total hogwash propagated by the music industry these days, driven by teenybopper inklings and 'what's cool' studies. On one hand, they deride mp3 swappers, on the other hand, they use the demographic data from IP addresses to push radio playlists! Hypocracy! MP3 is not original fidelity, even at 192kbps, the high end, where it achieves it's lackluster compression, gets totally thrashed. I say, let us download albums first, THEN pay the $15 if we like it enough. (or $1 a song...) but whatever, i'm only one voice, and i'm probably gonna be marked a flamer, cause i feel gay (and happy!) for getting this off my chest...
