if you use rsync, have a look at rdiff. It works similar to rsync, but can produce incremental "backups", i.e. it can have a master version of 2 weeks ago and 2 weeks full of diffs. You can restore any version from the diffs, which makes it very nice compared to rsync. rsync is good for basic desaster recovery and stupid users that "accidently" delete some folders, but rdiff can protect you from more subtile changes (do we still have that version from last week ?.. and no, media designers don't use cvs;)
I can second this. Getting IP adresses from RIPE is a major pain. their current policy forbids (!) to assign unique IP adresses to virtual web-servers, so you have to resort to name-based virtual hosts, which creates a whole lot of problems... (SSL, etc..)
using UDP in favor of TCP is a very bad idea, because of TCP's congestion avoidance, or the lack thereof in UDP. If everyone starts using UDP the net performance is going to crawl. Read Tannenbaums network book for a better explenation;)
Put a station near to the sun, and produce antimatter there. Enough solar energy, and the perfect small medium to transport energy. Now.. only be carefull about that transports;)
# hdparm -tT/dev/hdh/dev/hdh:
Timing buffer-cache reads: 128 MB in 3.10 seconds = 41.29 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 3.21 seconds = 19.94 MB/sec
So the harddrive can read twice as fast as max. network. Another question would be how much CPU is needed to get it on the wire ?
Btw.. is there any variant of NFS that uses hard drive caching ? i.e. make a special room of a few gig on the local harddrive to store frequently accessed data ? (this would speed up nfs-mounted/home quite a bit !;)
hmm, have to disagree. I think the spambot looks for common firstnames, and only found:
img alt="The Crown of King George II" align="left" src="crownico.gif"
a bit of parse logic would get rid of that Crown of stuff, so the name is there, it matches a dictonary word, as the adress has no dicionary name in it !
so i think its possible that it was a real spambot:)
Do you know what "nemesis" means? A righteous infliction of retribution manifested by an appropriate agent. Personified in this instance by an 'orrible cunt... me!
I'm currently planing of moving my computer to the next room, shut the door, and have a quiet PC.
Idea was basicly to use a 5 m monitor cable extender and a usb hub for keyboard and mouse. Sound is no problem. Anyone has experience with such a setup ? is it a good idea ?
Funny, my palm Vx is working as an alarm clock right now, because if its "relibity"...
I never had so much problems with hardware like the Vx... first defetive DRAM, the software patch never worked for me correctly with palmos 3.0, it did crash all the time, with palmos 4.0 it seems a litte more stable.
Then the digitizer goes mad every now and then, which is very annoying to reset:( (if you tap on the screen and the pixel is 30 pixel below, it sucks if you want to hit the top line;)
Third, the harware... the buttons wore out fast, i have trouble pushing the on button now, yay.
for me.. never buy a palm again, sorry palm, not that way...
there are sollutions for windows that do that for many many years
I had a 2 gb DAT streamer working under win98 and some special programm, that presented the tape as just another drive letter, it was really cool, expect the latency;)
I don't know about the US, but here in germany there are MANY companys offerering sms email notify, baiscly they send you the headline as sms. usually you buy a packet for sms notification with 50 sms per month for a couple of euros
have a look at the other screenshots at their site .. there's a button with "FT2" as renderer, which probably means freetype 2 ;)

I can second this statistics at least somehow. about 50-60% of our inbound email is spam (that is, what spamassassin did filter)

you must be new to slashdot. you should not click every link thats here (didn't you learn form goatse.cx ? ;)

Thats why i did misread it as durex :P
... that the language ADA does't work well with apache and modern browsers ? :)
IIRC someone was creating a complete desktop enviroment with mozilla, but i don't remember the name. It was mentioned some while ago here on slashdot.
the squid cache can do multicast communication with neighbour squid caches ...

Fontconfig did compile fine, but the CVS pango version seems borked ... too bad ... no nice fonts ;)
hmm, i just installed warcraft 3 from cd just fine. And no, i don't have any windows on my computer.
...
I had to "get" 2 dll's somewhere though
Bonnie++ Tests with U160-scsi and IDE:
/sec %CP
/sec %CP
... but don't need to tell you that the 2x80 gb maxtor were quite a lot cheaper ;)
IDE promise ATA hardware raid, 2x 80 gb maxtor:
Version 1.02c ------Sequential Output------ --Sequential Input- --Random-
-Per Chr- --Block-- -Rewrite- -Per Chr- --Block-- --Seeks--
Machine Size K/sec %CP K/sec %CP K/sec %CP K/sec %CP K/sec %CP
cotopaxi 1G 16356 99 34258 41 9183 7 14602 89 50924 16 351.6 1
thats 50 mb/sec.
now 3x fujitsu 15k rpm scsi-u160 drives, running software raid5:
Version 1.02b ------Sequential Output------ --Sequential Input- --Random-
-Per Chr- --Block-- -Rewrite- -Per Chr- --Block-- --Seeks--
Machine Size K/sec %CP K/sec %CP K/sec %CP K/sec %CP K/sec %CP
stromboli 3600M 9777 84 24733 68 18517 68 11916 98 53297 65 378.1 3
Again, around 50M/sec

Btw
Yes .. esp. since 3.2 is only a bugfix release, that should only fix some C++ ABI bugs ...
(there's quite some discussion about this now in the gentoo forums)

I wonder why everyone overlooks the fact that Serial ATA will remove the physical cable length restrioction of the traditional ATA interfaces.
IMHO its one of SCSI's major selling points that cables of LVD-SCSI can be > 5 m without problem.
On the Serial ATA website they claimed that they lifted that restriction, but now, how long can they be ?
(and for cable length, thy building a big tower, with a HD near the top. standard IDE cables don't cut it.)
you forgot one (from snatch ;)
