  6. Simple on Setting up a Small Office Network? · · Score: 1
This is a fairly simple operation. Before you begin, you need to ask yourself: How important is your data?

Let's start with the wiring. Generally, you're going to find that if you are in a VERY small office, like it sounds you might be, longer patch cables will be all you need to hook up PCs to the switches. If you need to maintain some formality, with external conduit and the like, you can still do this with longer patch cables. If it is a larger office, you must buy a box of cable and run it. I would suggest paying someone to do this. If you've not done it before, it can be annoying hard work. If you insist on doing it, do it right. Terminate at a punchdown block and at female RJ-45 adapters at the far end. Always run at least two CAT-5e cables to each drop. It would be better to run four, but that can get expensive. Remember to keep the wire as much like rope as possible, and leave yourself a 3 foot whip in the ceiling on each end.

Get yourself a cheap 24 port switch. You'll be glad you did when you find yourself adding more servers or VOIP stuff.

VOIP might be the easiest way to do telephones. You can manage it yourself, and if you get a system like Shoretel or NEC, you can pretty easily manage it yourself. Getting a third party to help install this is a must do.

Avoid anything with the word Cisco on it.

If your data is important, invest in a medium end server. Get a RAID controller and make it RAID 5. If the data is extremely important, pay the extra 100 dollars for a hot spare. You will also need to have a SCSI controller for your tape drive. You will want to buy two weeks worth of tape, plus tapes to be stored offsite for disaster recovery purposes. You will also want a fire-proof safe if the data is important.

If you can, buy identical PCs and make your builds with Norton Ghost. It saves a great deal of work. Always save the image to the local disk, as well as a cheap backup PC for your images (20 gig disk will be plenty for what you need), or to a PC on the network with a large disk (for both the OS and the back ups).

Always buy MS Office Pro. You may find cheap accounting software (this is VERY common) that uses Access for its functions. Different versions of Office can use it, but only if they have Access. Your co-workers will hate you if the do not have Power Point and they feel they need it.

If you need to protect e-mails, skip Exchange, and just backup the .pst files to the server, or leave them there. Floating profiles are nice with this.

Firewall is a must have. Also keep your PCs and server patched. It's annoying work, but should be done.

Unfortunately, the airlines do not have issues with flying, and hire lobbyists who control most of the US Congress. After 9/11, a crisis that the airlines knew could happen, and should have been planning for, the government came and gave them a 5 billion dollar bailout. But that's still not enough. The government still gives billions of dollars worth of subsidies to the airlines every year.

But what about railroads? Amtrak you say. Starvation funding has not done that company any good. Nor has the byzantine rules Congress forced the company to follow, such as keeping a certain tongage of coal on hand for it's locomotives.

Even if cross country train travel is no longer relevant, the local trains, particularly high speed trains, can and should compete with airlines. Chicago to St. Louis or Milwaukee or Duluth. Cincinnati to Lexington. Kansas City to Oklahoma City. Houston - Dallas. LA - SanFran. New York - pretty much everywhere in New England.

It's time to bring the true interurban railroads back. We can make them fast and reliable. They are cheaper to operate in terms of fuel than airplanes. And they are much more comfortable.

Or Nelson attacking the French with help from local native Central Americans. Or Cortes taking advantage of the cruelty of the Aztecs to create a series of alliances with the local natives. Or the British allying with the Egyptians and using Indian troops against Muslim holymen in the Sudan. Or T.E. Lawrence with the Bedouin fighting the Turks.

No, that has been the pattern of history. Despite what modern day opponents of Colonial History may say, the West has historically used ambitious natives in their money making schemes. Africans enslaved Africans, not Europeans. Chinese sold Opium to Chinese, not the British. Indians fought against the Afghans under British leadership.

Quite frankly, this sort of history as being presented in the article is erroneous to the point of being deliberate. Is there an agenda here, or is this just some deluded fool?

Listen to Aqualung, and then listen to a modern pop album. Or compare Tommy to something by Pearl Jam. David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust to Marilyn Manson.

The point of the album should not be a storage medium for music. A I-Pod, a piece of plastic, or even sheet music will accomplish all more or less equally. Instead, the album should be about establishing more layers to the music, giving the music more discipline, making the music more sublime. Only once this starts happening will the album reaffirm itself.

Daily access to life, such as going where you want to go is not bad, until you run into government officials. The communists will make your life hell. Simple things, like sending knives through the mail, are impossible to do. If they come to your house, even though you legally bought it, that butcher knife you use to cut your meat is illegal.

Basically, if they want to get you, they will find something to get you. Behave yourself. Not for your sake, but for that of your friends and any relatives you may have. If you are ABC (and you know what that means if you are), this goes double. What they might not do to whites, they will do to ABC.

Be prepared to stand in line for any government business. Also, any privacy you think you might be entitled to at a bank is non-existent. If you are white, you may complain about hospitality and get a little bit of space. If you are ABC, fugetabotit.

You'll lose 25 pounds in two weeks. Be prepared for that. You'll probably also catch a cold your first week there.

Speaking of cold, everyone wears a jacket all the time. It's a cold winter over there right now. Expect to be cold most of the time. Thick blue jeans from Walmart or Farm & Fleet are a good idea. So is long underwear. It sounds stupid. It's not. I wished I had brought some, and I spend my winters outside working without any.

Fly straight through. Immigration is a pain, and two hundred dollars for tickets on United as opposed to China Eastern with a stop over is worth it. It'll be some of the best money you'll ever spend. Also, your luggage will probably break sometime between leaving home and getting back home.

Watch your wallet, especially in the train station. I was there for not too long, and I had four people try to pick my pocket. Also, Beijing and Shanghai are not China. If you are going some place like Dailong, or Kaifung, life will be different.

Take amoxillician. The Chinese are very proud of Chinese herbal medicine. Proud to the point of insisting on feeding it to you until you require immediate hospitization.

Be safe while over there. Pocket knives are a good idea. If you bring US dollars, right now, you can live like a king on a beer budget. But that is not going to last longer than the year. China's going to be changing the way it pegs the RMB soon.

Have fun and good luck. If you need more, check out my journal or leave me a note there. China can get depressing, so keep a smile on your face. That'll cure most ills.
