And Freedom of Speech? Pah, fuck Freedom of Speech. There are certain situations in which I approve restricted speech. Here in Germany pro-nazi speaking is banned. Saying that Auschwitz never exsisted is a crime here.
And if a game's content goes too far, it should be banned.

They moved almost completly to Nintendo (especially to the GBA - as you also said).
There are also games like Viewtiful Joe (side scrller) or Ikaruga (vertical shooter) for GameCube. The world isn't lost. ;)

I probably wouldn't mind the 3-D style that much if someone could perfect, or at least slightly improve the camera angles of most games.
IMO the best transition from 2D to 3D was made with Metroid Prime. The gameplay is classic and fresh at the same time.

I used to be a fan of first person shooters, but really, how many times can you remake Doom & Wolfenstein. There are five thousand FPSs out there, and they just aren't fun anymore. I was on a Counter-Strike kick for a bit, I did like that game, but it just seemed to get old after a while (although I'm sure I wouldn't mind playing it again).
I agree with you to some extend. There are just too many ego shooters these days. Almost no innovation. But luckily every few years one or two good ego shooter are released, like Half-Life 1, Metroid Prime (OK, it's not a "real" ego shooter, but an ego action-adventure), and hopefully soon HL2 and Doom3.

I'd just rather pick up my Nintendo controller (or even my Super Nintendo one) and play a good old Castlevania game.
While it's not the newest game anymore, there's also a 2D Castlevania game for PlayStation 1 (called Symphony of the Night, IIRC).

Nintendo is no way like Apple.

    • Apple's hardware is overpriced.
Nintendo has the cheapest of the 3 consoles.
    • Apple has just a small market share (hardware).
If you compare the worldwide sales, XBox and GameCube sell about equally. The numbers vary depending who published them - according to GameSpy (I think it was GS, but I'm not sure) the GameCube is on #2, XBox is close on #3.
    • Apple has just a small market share (software).
Nintendo is a top publisher for console software. Nintendo is #1 publisher in Japan. Nintendo is #2 publisher in the USA (far behind EA, but still #2). I don't know the numbers of the sales in Europe, but I think it's similar.
  6. Netscape is good on Netscape 7.1 Released · · Score: 5, Insightful

Yeah, Netscape is good. I haven't read all the comments here, but there are (as always) comments like ''Why not use Mozilla instead?''
    I tell you why:
Netscape has more features and is easier for people without good computer knowledge.

I prefer Mozilla Firebird, but the plain MF is not for normal users.
They have to ''unzip'' it, they have to copy Flash and other plugins into the plugins directory, they have to install Java manually and so on.

    OTOH Netscape:
It comes with good, licensed spell checking (sorry, but OSS spell checkers suck - at least non-english ones), there's AIM and ICQ support, all important plugins are bundled, and Netscape adds important settings to the Windows registry (the location where it's installed for 3rd party plugins - a small, but important setting).

Currently I create installer builds of Mozilla Firebird (bundled with Flash and Java) for my friends, but that's only an acceptable solution for a handful of people.
It's easier to point to a simple URL than giving a CD with my custom MF to everyone.
Yes I know, there are also installer builds of Mozilla Firebird available on the net, but that's sometimes even too complicated for a few of my friends.
When I say ''Get Netscape. It's on Netscape dot com.'' It's easy.
When I say ''Get Mozilla Firebird. It's on geocities dot com slash blablabla slash ... umm... sorry, I forgot the adress. I tell you tomorrow.'' It's more coplicated. Also: what happens, if the person does not provide the installer any more? Who guaranties me and my friends that the webpage is still up in a month or two.
AOL is behind Netscape. I can be sure that Netscape will last a while. Netscape is easy to find, easy to install, and easy to use. That's why Netscape is good.

Now please explain to me the moral difference between nVidia's (or any other company's) proprietary OpenGL extensions and Microsoft's proprietary HTML extensions (both OpenGL and HTML "being an open standard").
Except that the HTML extensions are made by MS and nVidia's extensions are not made by MS.

why not submit DirectX to a standards board for use by all?

Have you seen how fast DirectX (or in this case Direct3D) developed compared to OpenGL? Compared to OpenGL, Direct3D is a new technology. How much has the OpenGL 1.x standard evolved, if you exclude the proprietary extensions? Be honest: Direct3D has overtaken OpenGL. OpenGL 2.0 was designed with Direct3D 9 in mind. The OpenGL comitee tried to catch up. DirectX 9 is established now. It's not yet widely used, but established. OpenGL 2.0 is AFAIK not even final yet (I could be wrong).
OpenGL develops too slowly. If DirextX became an open standard, I'm quite sure that the development speed will almost stop - just like OpenGL.
I'm not a fan of MS, but at least MS pushes the 3D development with an unified API on one platform. IMHO that's better that billions of incompatible proprietary OpenGL extensions.

There are a few reasons why OS/2 hasn't taken the lead in OSes. One reason is that OS/2 used a lot RAM that was very expensive that time. The people chose what was cheaper.

There are no XviD video files. Currently most video files are:
    AVI Container
    MPEG-4 Video Track
    MP3 Audio Track

The difference between DivX files and XviD files is the FourCC ("Four Character Code" or something).
DivX and XviD are just differernt encoders, not different formats. Just like LAME and FhG MP3Enc are differend encoders, but produce the same format.
If you change the FourCC from ''XVID'' to ''DIVX'' the normal DivX codec should be able to play it (I've never heard of any problems).
That's why I think, the people who encoded the video file should change the FourCC to DIVX, try to decode the file using DivX, and (if it works without problems) release the file with the DIVX FourCC.
This way you can reach a wider audiance.

What kind of RAM did they use? 100MHz? 800MHz? Something in between?
Which Windows version did they use? Was Hyper Threading enabled?
The list could be a lot longer, but you get the point.

Also: Wasn't the PPC970 meant to be a competitor to Intel Xeon and AMD Opteron CPUs rather that just the plain P4 (by price and aimed market)? (I'm not sure about this one.)
Why didn't they benchmark these as well? (They could at least get a Xeon, an Opteron is harder to get.)
The last sentence (''The fight is over and Apple will soon rule the world!'') gives me an indication why they didn't do this: They seem not to be interested in an objective comparison.
