MSFT gets to double their bragging, er market share, yahoo gets money and gets to lay off search developers who weren't keeping up with google and msft anyways.
Well I pay all my bills online (but not through direct withdrawal). I haven't printed off my taxes in over a decade filing them online every year. most of my car and license renewals are done online. I am 32.
Sure some things will always be done with paper. but I haven't had to use a sheet of paper at home other than my checkbook(one written check a month) in almost a decade. there are some forms that i have no choice but to fill out on paper. That is a good thing. however I can limit how much of it I use.
you are quite correct advertisers are googles customers. However you don't have to visit those sites. There is adblock for chrome. I may use gmail and google for my search engine, however that doesn't mean I have google toolbar installed. It doesn't mean i don't block doubleclick and prevent it from storing cookies.
I have an iphone. and in it's default configuration it is almost as limited as chromeOS. however if apple offered a 5-7" sized tablet with the same OS I would use that. However no one offers that form factor that is inexpensive and light weight. I surf the web on my iphone on a regular basis. however the screen size is way to small to read comfortably for a long period of time.
I got called a/.tard for saying that individuals didn't need printers yesterday. That i would rather have a cheap chromeOS powered device with no local storage and use that when i needed to move documents around my home. That smart phones just don't cut.
Of course now I will get called an idiot for just such things.
true there is nothing chrome can do that others can't. that is a given. it is just a dumb graphic terminal. who would ever want that.
oh I don't know maybe every single person who runs X11 to start with.
You don't see the value of Chrome. Fine, but I can admit something that many here can't. I surf the web, visit forums, read news, read the occasional blog, for hours every day. I would love to be able to do that from a seat that is far more comfortable than my desk chair. laptops aren't meant for any place other than a flat surface. Sure I download and try apps. Even whole OS's. but I have one whole computer that is basically a dumb terminal. it has running itunes(accessing a shared drive). firefox, and Safari running constantly. That is all that computer does. is basically load web pages. Why do I need the other 99% of the OS if all I am doing is running a web browser anyways?
except I stopped buying printers years ago when the ink would dry up and ruin the printer before I went through a full cartridge.
Maybe I care about he environment and limit the amount of useless one off pieces of paper that I use. while i am far from paper free, I use 10% of that of my coworkers. Just because I can use a directory structure and know how to scan things.
So call me a/Tard if you like but at least I don't pollute more than I have to.
I went through two printers before I realized that the inkjets suck if all your printing is one or two pages a month.
You just decided to ignore the rest of my post which stated that this isn't meant to replace OS X Linux, or Windows. It is in addition too. Like your smart phone. which other than windows mobile, uses a stripped down version of the OS, Limited local storage, lame web apps and online backup.
The only difference is that the screen size will be 5 times as big as your smart phone so you can actually read it from 3-4 feet away. Or you can read more than 5 lines of text at a time without scrolling.
You aren't chaining yourself to the platform. in fact if you use linux, windows, OSX your chained. to a subsection of limited non cross platform apps. ChromOS has a lot less to debugg, and is mounted read only so if you do get corrupted OS it can reload with a reboot. something no other OS can do(linux can do it but isn't set that way by default) So by default ChromeOS will be faster to update, and secure easier than any other "mature" OS.
Slashdot crowd can't wrap their heads around this idea, yet many wanted to buy the cruchpad which is exactly what chromeOS devices will be like.
You don't seem to understand chromeOS at all like most here on slashdot. This isn't supposed to ever be your only computer/OS. The hardware and OS for this is based on the fac tthat you already have two or three "desktop" style computers and want something that is easy to use.
While cooking isn't a slashdotter trait, Say you come across a really great recipe at your desk, but now you want to go make it? well since it is online you could transfer it to your smart phone and squint at the screen as you try to make it. You could take your expensive laptop into the kitchen but if that is stupid as kitchens have all sorts of nasty liquids and powders in them that can cause harm. You might be willing to risk your hardware, but how about the data on the hard drive that just got trashed?
So now you can take a cheap(~$200 netbook maybe) computer there access that data remotely(run your own webserver if you want). and if you do destroy it only the hardware has to be dealt with.
personally the PC needs a major redesign anyways. Every computer should have two HD's one for the OS and one for the user files and applications. The OS system should always be mounted read only. While not eliminating attacks it would help slow the spread of malware if a reboot would undo most of them.
people this is Dan lyons he is the guy who said SCO not only had a case but would win.
I would trust him being right about as much I would trust darl mcbride to be right. once a liar always a liar. Some people can change but the most will not have the strength to.
Besides it is almost anti-gogle for google to push even more ads on people. Google ads are almost always simple text based items that are off to the side. unlike MSFT which brands everything it touches two or three times.
Ah but that is the point MSFT has built a business that caters to those who won't upgrade to the latest API's. Apple Does though and look at all the crap they get when they try to push those updated API's on programmers. Apple is doing just what you suggest. not by using a pure managed code, but by using a hybrid.
So just remember Apple catches flak from developers for pushing through updated api's(safer is relative) MSFT catches flak for allowing win9x api"s in windows vista(I haven't tried 7 yet) Linux catch's flak for just about everything in between
I personally know of three separate multi megwatt farms that aren't going to be because the people don't want them in their town. Oil collapsing shuts down cars. America isn't built to run without oil or cheap electricty. a major price spike in either trashes the economy.
The EPA won't let new nuclear plants to get built. If the plants get decommissioned it will literally cut our energy production by 1/2. It takes 10-15 years to build a new nuclear plant by EPA guidlines, and the population in that zone won't let it get built just as they refuse to let wind turbines to get built.
So our only short term solution is to let the NRC extend the lives of the plants. It is either that or force new nuclear plants to get built but it isn't cost efficient to do so.
there is a real energy crisis looming. Simply because people won't plan ahead, the oil will start to run out roughly when all the fission plants have to go offline do to safety reasons.
The US doesn't rely on mercenaries to fight the wars. They are used as defense after the "war" was won.
The US military literally rolled over the Iraqi army twice. 1991's Desert Storm crushed the air and tank defenses of iraq. Something Iran spent 8 years trying to do, the armed forces of the USA did in weeks. So if oyu want something crushed, destroyed or captured the USA army is great. If you want a police force the USA is like using a nuclear warhead to take demo a single building. There are hundreds of examples in both wars plus Afghanistan of 12-20 us soldiers fending off 100+ attackers with minimal losses of their own.
In reality what the USA needs to develop is a heavily armed (preferably international) police force. People who are better at keeping the peace, while still strong enough to defend againist such attackers. Leave the military to attack installations, and large groups and the police force to defend the people.
Yes they do. You just haveto read more than the headlines to catch it. Since it isn't breaking news tv stations won't showit but newspapers usually have a short article on them.
It iswhy I have stopped watching tv news. They are more talk show than news reporting. And since they are talk show they become self censoring.
take a quick look at the home keys on any mobile. more than likely the keyboard doesn't conform to normal layout, and the little ridges on J and F keys are generally missing.
non standard keyboards have non standard layouts which require relearning anyways.
Onsidering my iPhone is easy to clean and I don't need tactile feedback for the on screen keyboard I would say it is something some people will work easily with and others won't. Your results will vary.
As a side note if your eating that mess if food at your computer and not using napkins or towels your keyboard has to be disgusting
you can't surf the web witht he wii while playing a game. Smartphones are okay but the screen size is small enough that angles become an issue, ( I currently use my iphone for that part). Laptops have the right screen size though even they are bulky and require a table or smooth hard surface to set them on in order to work with. They are also not easy to get comfortable with unless your sitting in certain positions.
I use my iphone at work daily to surf the web during lunch. however the screen size is to small for reading lots of text without eye strain.
wait other than screen size the driod, will use similar hardware to chrome. And the driod will be at the same price points(other than verzion charging you for it)
ChromeOS computers are to use when your not at a desk. for when you want to look something up from the living room, add some cool software to remote your other computers and you can download software and music that you see while watching tv.
Computers aren't couch devices. i also don't know about you but even when playing a computer game I sometimes have to look things up online. walk=throughs, etc. So your playing your xbox on your large HD tv, and you forgot that cool combo. chromeOS is designed for that. a small touch slate tablet and you can have that information at your finger tips.
for part of my company we scan and email documents for sending. The fax is there, but over 3/4 of the fax numbers for the company actually convert the document to PDF's and then hit the mail server. which sends them out to every one who might need a copy.
another 10-15 years and those that can't do it digitally will finally retire. between email, an easy to use scanner, and decent file management I only save a handful of hard copies. Of course I have to trust that my IT dept does decent backups of the network drives.
end users rarely benefit from this kind of deal.

Britteny isn't smart enough to use emacs she probably uses vi.
we not only send people into space with a 1-2% failure rate but we do so by sitting them on top of a giant bomb.

never under estimate the collective stupidity of people.

Not really. I make little mistakes like that with a real keyboard too. In fact just typing keyboard I switched the o and a keys,
Some people can't spell worth a damn. It is the real reason I prefer mac's and the iphone over windows based systems. Built in universal spell check.
