Apple is no different than any other company in that regard. Haven't you ever seen a MSFT commercial where they say Vista is fast and secure?

You can't use your desktop that fast either. It just takes time to actually use the products they are showing. And over 3g connections it is slow.

The military is addressing that very issue. very slowly but they are. I do believe the missiles for the f-22 and the f-35 use the same interface. they are doing this from a logistics point, as each plane literally needs it own equipment for testing and in the field having to lug 12 different interfaces around has proven to be a pain.

Think of it less in terms of contracts and more like the auto industry. each brand of car(ford, gm, toyota, honda, etc) and each car in their respective lineups would use different engine codes in their computers, and in some cases different plug interfaces for the information.

to get a ford f-150 engine computer interface you had to spend several hundred if not thousands of dollars. and again for every different unit. Manufactories think such things needed to be kept secret. yet years of pressure has finally brought at least some standardization in that area allowing less expensive diagnostic units.

Actually if you read it is about renaming the extensions. if I change .jpg to .gif in linux or OSX a different app may load but the file will still open as a jpeg.

Doing so in windows either throws up errors or crashes the app. Changing a .exe to .jpg.exe is enough for windows as a OS to treat the file differently. While MSFT filters are good at catching things like that is a band aid solution.

OS X and linux use the file being accessed to determine if it is an app or not, not the file name. thus cutting down a lot of problems right at the beginning.

Design your system intelligently and you have less gaping holes to deal with later. When you do find holes you don't fix them with a coat of paint, you repair the wall and foundations.
