I have had the chance to watch two different sets of parents raise two different sets of kids.(friends vs family)
One set watched TV had mcdonalds occasionally, played video games.
The other set all of the above was either banned or discouraged( TV watching was discouraged).
Neither group was really religious(you can count the number of times both groups went to church on one hand)
The kids with minimal TV, while not necessarily smarter are generally calmer, and listen better to their parents.
the interaction of parent and adult at the young age at this point seems to be the trick(the oldest child is 7) As far as learning, the kids without TV are able to deal with complex puzzles(for their age at least) quite easily.
of course 4 kids 2 from each family is hardly noteworthy for standard deviation.
ah but that is the point it isn't average daily use we buy a car for. most of us can only afford one maybe two cars. therefore we need something that is not only suitable to dealing with average daily use, but also the use that we enjoy. weather it is hauling boats for once a month weekend trips, loading up for vacations, or even hauling your kids and their friends around to various sporting events(both with them as players and just going out).
I owned a full size jeep for years. terrible milage but that vehicle took me every where I wanted to go hauling all sorts of fun stuff. my next car I couldn't do that with. it may be fuel efficient but if the roads aren't perfect it doesn't like it. I miss my jeep several times a year when i need to go move something, drag something or simply go somewhere where the roads aren't in great condition.
Being able to rent a trailer and is much easier than renting a truck or van that's big enough.
Average daily use isn't what we buy a car for we buy for all of our needs and it mostly gets used for average daily needs.
you know in the early days of fission they said the same thing about uranium.
The trick is to understand it enough to make it work, and then to understand it enough to make it stable, and then cheap.
the real problem is the major jump in material sciences needed to control it. fission is easy as it wants to decay. Fusion will be a long way off but solar, and wind while necessary to augment and in a few isolated cases dominate aren't stable enough for the high energy demands of our society
That's just it. It is only defamation MasterCard didn't have a legal reason. Therefore sueing the prime minister is a stunt. Wiki leaks as an entity should so sue MasterCard.
Anything else is a publicity stunt to stroke personal egos.
The thing is does he have a case. Assange very much enjoys the public spot light. He wants to be where he is. The responsible thing for him would have been to hand wiki leaks over to some one he trusted to maintain wiki leaks integrity. Now wiki leaks reputation lives and dies with Julian. For the last two years wiki leaks has been sidelined because of his antics
He should sue MasterCard. It was MasterCard that cut him off. Unless he can find the official government document instead of random remarks he doesn't have a case. Suing anyone but MasterCard is a publicity stunt that is nothing but an ego stroke for him.
there is a difference between being near car exhaust outside. in a closed space like a garage or restaurant , and wrapping your lips around the tail pipe.
What smokers don't realize that just two cigarettes can quickly turn a small space into a garage with the doors closed and the car running.
At least marajuana has mostly pleasant side effects. cigarettes, cigars, pipes have none. It is pure addiction that drives smokers to smoke.
many industries are moving manufacturing back to the states and Europe not because the Chinese can't do it cheaper but shipping has become so damn expensive.
once robots are built to do that fine dexterity work it becomes feasible to build small factories in various countries around the world and only ship raw materials/bulk products around. why build USA's and Europe's demand in China when they could be built in Canada or Ireland for a fraction of the overall shipping costs. In the next 30 years I see that trend coming out. combined with advances in material sciences and 3D Printing/Robototic assembly. one massive factory will become franshise factories.
If you want an idea. a restaurant only cooks and prepares food it doesn't grow/gather the raw materials. a franchise factory will build your item. to designer specs, and with possibly raw materials supplied by the designer.
actually for point defense cannons are iffy. They don't have the effective range to stop a missile very easily.
Guns basically have a.3 second window when the missile is in the sweet spot for damage vs distance from it's target. (time based on exactly how fast that missile is flying) Guns have a max range of 2-3 Miles. a distance a missile traveling at mach 1 at sea levels covers in what.6 seconds. Don't forget to clock in time for the round to travel too.
Anti Missile systems while significantly farther out only get one chance.
a rapid fire rail gun with a 110 m range would be a great for defense.
Of course with current tech rapid fire and rail gun don't mix very well. that was once said about regular guns too though.
falklands, balkans, heck even the persian golf war(1991) all had gun firing dogfights.
granted BVR(beyond visual range) attacks are most common. dogfighting skills and guns won't go away.
Even the F-22 has guns built into it.
The F-22 is stealth but not perfect, and I would hope the russians have other ideas, but since China is trying to build their own version of the F-22 I would have to say your wrong on that.
The question is it stealth enough to fool the missile's and enemy plane's radar? that is all that is really needed.
except legally if that happens all of Europe is supposed to declare war on the USA.
such an event will wither completely unite for permanently break the EU.
It is EU extradition law that will prevent him from ever coming to the USA. It would have been easier to black bag him in the UK, or Australia, than go through this mess.
No the USA is discrediting him. His word became worthless the moment he choose to be silent on civil rights abuses by Ecuador in exchange for staying there. It means Wiki leaks can be bought. want to prevent leaks from happening against you. here is the price.
Exactly iOS maps wasn't updated feature wise since the original iPhone in 2007.
Google and apple couldn't come to terms and as a result iOS mapping suffered.
Intelligent people don't buy only from one company. You diversify as much as possible to prevent the vendor from strangling you. Doesn't matter if it is apple, google,Msft, dell or sco.
exactly. he is currently in a cell of his own choosing and is choosing to move to a country where human rights is an oxymoron, and the government frequently does things to it's own citizens that make the USA look good.
I figure he will be killed by a drug dealer in 6 months of arriving in Ecuador.
at my current job I have both windows 7 and XP on my machine why?
Because the entire "system is a remote desktop session" to a secured server windows 7 came standard on my new computer however any RDP capable machine could make it work.(my previous machine was literally win 2k.
Windows XP isn't going anywhere in such environments.
I dropped my iphone 3G 4 times twice onto concrete without any ill effects.
One of the times the phone was in my jacket pocket literally while I was on a ladder I must have bounced or moved just right as I felt it slide out and heard the thunk.
One of the times that wasn't on concrete I was carrying a heavy load up a flight of stairs I had to adjust my grip and as I did the phone slipped out of a different pocket. it sort of cartwheeled down the stairs too.
I don't use rubbers on my phones. That phone worked just fine for 3 years before I finally upgraded.
that is today's results. the results in 10 years might be the same percentage but China has 4 times our population that means they have 4 times as many "innovators" to come up with new ideas.
Meanwhile the US is failing behind In 20-30 years when the actual results will matter America is going to get left behind.
of course American politicians are short sighted enough not to see results 4-10 years later. the longer term view in china is going to bite us in the ass.
I know dozen of people who use an iPad for 70% of their work.
of course 70% of their work isn't creating or editing data, but taking random notes, shooting off quick emails so other people can do the work, etc.
These people are called salesmen (and women). their job is to talk to people and make other people do the real work for them. Teachers don't need ipads(at least until they get the display problems sorted out).
Teachers need laptops as they create more content than they consume. (at least professionally)
Even during the great depression food riots only rarely occurred and while there was civil unrest it was far from panic or massive
The kind of riots are tough to happen because if the global food supply that fresh fruit you just bought probably has traveled more milessince it was a seed than you will this entire year.
Now shut down the plnes trains and trucks and then the food riots will appear
no it's not.
wikileaks is only about assange. if you want to leak important documents do it somewhere that it won't blow up in your face
iTunes doesn't need an overhaul it needs an axe.
Seriously Idevice sync, media player and iTunes Store should be separate apps.

that's not a bad idea create a corporation and sign your computer and internet connection over to it.
That way nothing you do or say online can be used againist you as it is a corporate computer and immune.

this is slashdot and the only languages that are known here are english and bad english.
yippee kay yay mother fuckers.
a 3D printer doesn't just do the electronics. and it doesn't assemble multiple components into one. at least yet.

The first shown shadow attack in B5 shows spaces battles as they would be.
It is boring visually. Long range laser beams and missile/mines.
the rest were done up close to make things look more visually interesting.
I like B5 and that scene always stuck out.
falklands, balkans, heck even the persian golf war(1991) all had gun firing dogfights.

Phone that by this point are at least 3 years old if not 4.
HTC and Samsung won't support their android phones 6-12 months after release Apple is giving you 3-4 years of support and updates.

yet even still there wasn't massive riots of hungry people storming the governments.
There was greater civil unrest int eh 1960's than the 1930's. even with prohibition .
I didn't say people didn't starve to death I said there was comparatively little unrest.
Even during the great depression food riots only rarely occurred and while there was civil unrest it was far from panic or massive
