You know if only 30% of prisoners report being raped during their term, that's really not that high considering the fact that 1 in 6 women are victims of rape or attempted rape nation wide. (Source Source 2). I'm not saying prison rape or any rape is right. I'm just making the point that 30% of prisoners being raped is not a hugely alarming statistic. And the statement by the parent that people suggesting that the problem of prison rape is overrated deserves to be raped is quite ironic. Using the parents logic: If he deserves to be raped for using his right to free speech then certainly prisoners would deserve to be raped for possession of marijuana. No one deserves to be raped. Fact is people make jokes about it. They don't mean to hurt anyone by the jokes. But most humor is at least mildly offensive to SOMEONE. That's where the phrase the butt of the joke comes in. The fact that the butt of prison rape jokes happens to be the butt of the prisoner makes no difference. Lighten up a little.

If you have a verizon wireless retail store in your area you can take it in there and ask for them to remove the PRL indicator. They won't always do it but I got them to do it with my old audiovox 8600 (I loved that phone... until I dropped it while I was on a ladder and the flip screen litterally broke off.)

The purpose of the verizon wireless banner is to show you whether your in an area covered by Verizon's network, or if your in their extended network. So if they remove the PRL indicator you'll have no way of knowing whether you are roaming or not. Of course if you have nationwide access this won't matter. Actually if you don't have their nationwide access (or whatever the crap they're calling it now) they may not remove it at all.

Really it's just a matter of luck, sometimes the retail store will do it and sometimes they won't, but if you have one close by it won't hurt to ask. Also make sure if the employee doesn't seem helpful ask to speak to the manager he might be more helpful.

I find it interesting that they released this as a live cd. As far as I can remember this is the first time a desktop environment released a live cd with their new releases.

This is certainly a trend I'd like to see more of. There have been times where updating to the latest version of kde or gnome could cause a headache that lasts several hours (yes even in debian where there are occaisional dependency problems especially in unstable). And there are of course some distros that take several weeks before packages are available. Of course compiling from source is an option, but remember if linux is ever going to be ready for the desktop, compiling from source has got to be just that, an option.

But with a live cd release you can check out the new features and decide whether it's worth the risk of a headache.

I'm still downloading the iso but I give KDE major props for releasing a live cd in addition to the source.

Yes the manufacturer should be held responsible for longer than 90 days. However they don't.

That's why extended warranties and service plans are sold. And that's why people buy them. Cause they don't want something they buy to break on day 91 only to be told they're SOL by the manufacturer.

I'm kinda curious though if it would be feasible to do motion capture using a real ape. It would have to be a female of course (a male would pummel anyone trying to glue ping-pong balls to it).

It would make for super acurrate motions as to how an ape should move. Though, I thought the folks on "Planet of the Apes" did a spectacular job of getting their actors to move like Apes.

While the use of mo-cap with Golum was an extremely good idea, that was because it was a character that had similar characteristics to that of a human and was actually being played by a human. Which is why they did mocap in the first place. And it worked well for that case because Andy Serkis is already a very good actor that could take direction.

However to do mocap with an actual ape is pointless... It's not easy to direct an ape... And if you managed to get an ape to do what you wanted the way you wanted it done, as would be required for mocap, then it'd probabbly be cheaper to use the actual ape and then make him look much larger instead of modeling him and then using motion capture for him.

I seem to remember in the mid 1990's people said the same thing about Internet Explorer. Why after all would people use Internet Explorer when everyone is already using Netscape? By the time Microsoft released IE 4.0 Netscape was struggling... And by IE 5, Netscape's market share was practically non-existant. IE now controls an estimated 95.4% of the web browser market share. The majority of the people still using Netscape are large companies and educational instititutions who tell their employees to use it. However I'm not saying that Internet Explorer is any good. (I'm typing this comment from Mozilla on a windows system.) I'm just saying that it's foolish to think that Flash is safe. Netscape thought they were safe until it was too late. As long as Macromedia reallizes that Sparkle is a potentially major threat, and takes actions to prevent it from becoming so, Macromedia will end up just like Netscape. Of course, unless Microsoft gets with the program and starts integrating tabbed browsing I'd say Mozilla may be able to sneak up on them.

They know siren+flashing lights should equal get out of the way... But there's always someone that thinks that getting to wherever they're trying to go is more important than getting the poor guy that just got hit by a drunk driver, thrown from his car, and pinned between the car and a tree to the hospital. So they think "Well there's an ambulance coming... But I've got a green light my way so screw the ambulance I'm going... So if the ambulance runs the redlight, at the same time this idiot goes through their green light, then another ambulance has to be sent out for that wreck. So when an ambulance, or other emergency vehicle gets to a red light, it stops at the redlight to make sure that the intersection is clear both ways then starts going again. They don't have to stop and wait for the light to change.
