    agreed, this site is very linux-biased.

    i don't see the difference between this and microsoft's news, its all narrow-minded propoganda.

    doesn't linux run on the nintendo 64? the n64 will only ever be used for games, while the DC may one day be more than that. Porting linux to the n64 is "too much free time"

    linux isn't ahead of freebsd.

    I think its moreso if freebsd messes up badly enough linux has a chance..

    Let the people choose between Net/Open/FreeBSD, Linux, even Windows.

    there is a big difference between understanding and truly comprehending.

    this'll probably be moderated down for flamebait. I'm not trying to anger anyone, its my honest opinion. The GPL is similar to communism. Sure it sounds great, but it won't work long in practice. The BSD-style license is much better. How free is code that you are FORCED to release your changes for? and lets not play what-if games, the freebsd people have yet to be outdone. There will always be people who release their changes. But if for a company its ability to not release source or bust, i'd much rather see them modify freebsd code then use MS.

    What victory do you speak of?
    If linux dominates the market, then its not very _free_ at all. And with a license like the GPL, its closer to communist.

    I believe that everyone (Linus included?) wants competition among OSes.

    If you want to be a zealot, please be a free-software zealot. Not a GPL software zealot, not a GNU (ugh) one, not a Linux one, but a free software zealot.

    FreeBSD users exist too.
    (and running on an obscure platform is more secure, see another one of my posts)

    You are forgetting security.
    If someone gets, say, telnet or login (it has been done) to core, if your machine is x86-based they'll probably be able to own your system (if they are knoweldagble, x86 asm is a very popular asm language).
    If its running on PPC, they most likely won't be able to enter in the assembly and own the box that way.
    Security through obscurity :P

    Yup, libwine is what you are describing.
    I wouldn't be surprised if thats how they ported netscape, as the code isn't clean.

    Code that comes out of libwine usually needs a lot of optimization, its usually pretty clunky.

    screw the website, use the whois command. Any Real OS (i'm a converted Linux user, running freebsd 3.2-RELEASE now) has it included or with some basic net package. Use the whois command to easily see who REALLY owns that domain :P

    OJ wasn't declared innocent.
    There was just simply not enough evidence to prove him guilty beyond a reasonable doubt (or at least the jurors thought so)
    There is a reason why the verdict is Not Guilty as opposed to innocent.

    Wasn't UNIX developed for portability? And UNIX was developed for servers, as in '69 basically everything that was running an OS in bell labs could be seen as a server, with dumb terminals connected throughout their buildings. my 2/100th of a dollar

    Perhaps this is OT, but exactly why do so many companies see a need to support Linux? If their goal is to promote up-and-coming OSes, perhaps they should release source and let the hackers out their DIY or say they are also releasing FreeBSD. Linux isn't the only free-software up-and-coming OS on the market, you know.
    But if i understand properly they are talking about improving X. That'll affect _ALL_ UNIXes.
    I've used both FreeBSD and Linux, and i have my own personal opinion on which one is better. I don't want to start any religious wars, as to each his own, but heres a hint (my favorite isn't the second one).
    I think that EVERYONE out there should try both. Only fair.

    So we lose power, i highly doubt that we'll have meltdowns. Unless the computers control core cooling.. i'm sure theres a guy there to shut it off by hand or something.

    The tool you are referring to is xvidtune, which XF86Setup does run when most configuration is complete.
    xvidtune is installed with most X distributions.

    Woah, slow down there cowboy. The hundreds others that could, did.
    Its called the FreeBSD project, formely 386BSD, and its first
    free release is almost as old as Linus, and older than me and probably a lot of you guys (and girls) out there.
    Linux has had impressive growth over the past 7 years.
    But not as impressive as FreeBSD with its first roots dating back to 1969.
    Linus was -not- the first. He was -not- an impressive coder.
    Whats going on today has already been done.

    Hes right, it has a lot to do with the Lead Underwriters (although i doubt that E*Trade is one of them)
    IPOs are heavily controlled by the SEC- but there is a friends and family clause that lets redhat sell shares at reduced prices
    Perhaps their lawyers didn't consider this or the SEC wouldn't allow it
    Either way- just because you don't get in on the IPO usually doesn't mean much.
    Just pick it up the first day of trading- i'm sure volume will be high.

    i'm sorry, but everyone always referrs to all digital information as: just 0s and 1s.
    The binary system is used to portay a number. It isn't JUST 0s and 1s. They are ons and offs that together represent something.
    People would look at you funny if you said "who cares about handwritten papers? They are just areas of ink and areas without"

    MP3s are a disruptive technology. The industry will adapt or die, and other companies will take over. Either way the industry as a whole will survive, just maybe not with the same companies.
