NVidia has now for a LONG time supported the AMD64/Opteron platform (as well as IA-64, but who cares - UT2004 sure isn't going to appear on IA-64)

My current set up is an Athlon XP 2400+ pared with a KT266A-chipset motherboard. I had NO problems with the chipset under Linux or FreeBSD - ever, ever, ever. Sure - VIA has issues with new chipsets, but hey, they're human too - who doesn't. If you stick with the A-releases you should be more than fine.
I have, however, encountered it impossible to run Windblows XP without SP1 - without the harddrive being unusably corrupted within the first 30 minutes of uptime. But thankfully - that horror is over. No more Mr. Balmer and Microsoft on MY computer - or any computer within my proximity, ever.
Anyways - I can't wait to start porting my home-brew kernel onto x86-64 whenever I come across a cheap Athlon64.
The Solaris kernel, in particular, is a technological marvel and is one of the leading development platforms for new ideas in OS and Kernel development.
The Solaris system, as well, is very well thought out.
So if by chance you wind up with an UltraSparc or x86 box setup with Solaris, and with all your hardware functional, then you have a superb system.
However, getting to that stage without resorting to disk imaging is hard. Solaris has probably one of the worst installation routines - its even less stable (and functionally useful) than Microsoft's windows setup, which already speaks volumes. The design is horrible - from the key binding, to the (or lack thereof of) menu option, to the very unflexible installation, to the stalls and crashes along the way. Mind you, even if you did successfully manage to "install" it, it certainly will require a lot of your attention to make all your hardware work - certainly not turnkey.
As a person who bought four x86 Solaris 9 licenses, along with CDs, DVDs (StarOffice too!!), I was sort of disappointed in my fruitless methods of installing SOlaris successfully. Hardware support is definitely a little scanty (but I can't blame that on Sun since they tailor their OS to UltraSparcs which they produce, not to PCs). Installing Solaris on a spare Ppro box is definitely one of my Christmas holidays projects.

The A3 proved to be problematic, and a redesign was started as the A5. This version was completely reliable, and by 1941 the team had fired about 70 A5 rockets. The first A4 flew in March 1942, flying about 1.6km and crashing into the water. The second launch made it to 11,000m in altitude before exploding. The third rocket, launched on October 3, 1942, changed things by following its trajectory perfectly. It landed 193km away, and became the first man-made object to enter space as well as the first man-made machine to exceed the speed of sound
The A4 later became the V-2, which was as the basis both for Soviet and American Space programs after WWII.
So nearly after 80 years of successful European R&D (as well as successful designs some 70 years ago, and space launches 60 years ago), the Indians finally decided they were good enough for LOX/LOH rockets, albeit only after some poverty-stricken Russian scientist sold them the "magic" to do that - apparently praying to Vishnu didn't work - what a bad Godling.
