"To offer some perspective, here in the UK we have monthly limits that are most commonly in the 15-30Gb range"
To add some perspective, here in the US I transfer ~200gb a week, and since April 28th just one of the three always-on PCs transferred a upload/download combined 602gb. That's the media server, which transcodes video delivered from Hulu and Netflix through PlayON so it's viewable on the TV through a XBMC. I cancelled my TV service nearly 3 years ago and have been relying on downloaded and streaming media ever since.
Even my regular PC, which I use for email, web and occasional Youtube video averages 70gb a month.
If I was limited to 250gb a month I could not watch Hulu or Netflix and would have to closely monitor my Youtube usage. I would also have to install flash and ad blocking software to prevent any banner ads from appearing which hurts the websites I love.
"Surprisingly, even at stock speeds, the i7-875K offers better performance and power efficiency per dollar than just about any other desktop CPU out there."
-1, Inaccurate
The 2.8ghz i7-930 is $199 vs $342 for a 2.93ghz i7-875K, so almost double the price for 0.13ghz more. How did the author see that and think "better performance per dollar"? The article he linked to even shows the better performance per dollar in a chart, and btw techreport that chart is pretty piss poor, shoving $200 processors on a chart that goes to $1200 just clumps 90% of the processors in the $50 to $400 range. Learn how to make a chart: you should have left off under $50 (no processors under $50) and anything past $1000 (no processors over $1000). Because of your crappy chart the i7-875 is right next to the i7-930 despite the $142 difference.
The i7-930 is locked but it does reach 4ghz on air rather easily.
I picked up a samsung clp 310 COLOR laser for $99 last year at office depot. My brother picked up the clp 315w with wifi for $150. Couldn't be happier, still running off the 1,000 page starter toner.
Besides, you ignore them they'll keep it up, but you pop'em in the jaw a few times, scuff up their clothes, just make it unpleasant for a few minutes and they'll respect you more. Works every time, few bullies will return for a second helping... i should know, i'm on/. ain't i?;) Even if you lose and lose badly you'll still earn the respect of classmates, some might laugh a bit but when they see you get angry they know you're not afraid to start swinging.
I guess I'll never understand then, I don't see the point of spending $300+ on such a niche product that will never compete with less expensive devices with more capabilities and better support. I haven't read one good argument for purchasing this:
--Emulator/Homebrew? Buy PSP.
--UMPC with keyboard? Buy a real UMPC for $350 or $275 or hundreds of others
--small HTPC with S-Video? buy a $3 cable and you can do that with a iPod Touch or iPhone
In fact, a jailbroken Touch offers almost everything the Pandora does except the physical keyboard, but I think the millions of apps make up for it.
"Like he said, it's directly comparable to the Motorola Droid / Milestone...and it runs Android apps. "
People always forget: it's not hardware, it's content. Gameboy vs Gamegear circa 1990s. So you're right, the Droid wins because it runs Android which offers tens of thousands of apps for millions of users. How many people pre-ordered a Pandora? Oh right, 3,000. Would you make a game knowing your market is just 3,000 people?
Honestly these guys should replace the OS with Android and sell it for $199 like iPod Touches, I'd be far more interested it if supported a OS that already has thousands of apps.
and the world will do nothing, because you jumped in the shark tank with roast beef strapped to your balls.
I understand that the US govt sucks, but we know that because we're permitted to bitch about it A LOT, and there's nothing we like to do more than bitch about things and post it all over the internet.
"someone that grew up with Texas' new curriculum invented time travel."
Again, no one "invents" anything, we're given God's Divine Inspiration and only through His Will do we have the power to create anything. The same inspiration that makes the grass grow, babies born, and blesses the Great State of Texas everyday.
At least that's what my Texas history book sent to me from the future told me.
"My sarcasm radar is all over the place on this one. Is he joking or or real?"
Confirmed Joke. From his twitter: "My viral video got about 15,000 hits from SlashDot - http://bit.ly/bMGX9W - Ads made nearly $50.00 today! (proceeds are donated to charity)"
Why do I suddenly feel like an idiot for helping this guy get $50?
One of the "girls" filed for trademark in 95 so that could be her on slashdot. I say the new girl just go 1337 using geekgrrl instead, but geekgirl 95 is stupid if she hasn't been actively using the trademark for 15 yrs and now tries to defend it
Wow cougar starts at 30? That seems pretty young, when I thought "older" I always imagined 40+, but maybe that's because I'm close to 30ish. Guess I'm too old to be the younger man anymore
not only was there no alcohol involved (also shocked), but apparently this was sponsored by Honda "Their bizarre journey was made possible as part of carmaker Honda’s Live Every Litre project."
Really Honda? Sponsoring something that sounds like a drunken fratboy prank probably isn't the best publicity.
"it's limited to prisoners who meet a standard as being "sexually dangerous", so they're not just being held without due process. Apparently this applies to about 100 prisoners nationwide."
Today it's 100, tomorrow it's 100,000. Was there a new trial? Did lawyers present evidence? Or did a person or 3 simply say "he's sexually dangerous, leave him in"? Is there a time frame to be re-evaluated?
I say he served his time, if they believe he is still "sexually dangerous" then he needs treatment, not more jail time. Put him in a physiatric ward.
"The problem might not be that there isn't a well developed creative focus, but maybe that you haven't been able to _communicate_ that fact."
Then say "Looks interesting, but we need more details". Seems whatever they read didn't warrant even investigating. I see many of the projects have videos, did they post those videos to be chosen by Kickstarter or after they were chosen to get more pledges?
Suppose my point is they said they weren't creative or developed, while the lawn mowing site does look developed (far more than Diaspora does right now) and it is creative, at least as creative as a social networking site.
Some on/. have already said how Diaspora doesn't have a shred of code ready yet, even their site is a holding page, so what would have happened if Kickstarter hadn't picked them? Would they not have bothered? That worries me, that they didn't say "hey lets make this site and try to make some money" like the rest of the internet. Instead they said "Pay us and we'll make a website". They're not entrepreneurs, they're hired coders, and hired coders will follow the dollar, so if Facebook gave them a few million tomorrow I feel those pledges might go to waste.
"XP is 9 years old and Win7 is a very good replacement for newer machines"
RTFA: "According to Seagate, this includes the 64-bit versions of Windows 7 and Vista, as well as modified versions of Linux,"
So 7 is not immune. For example, there is no 64-bit version of Windows 7 Starter, and many manufactures don't publicize if the OS they're offering is 32-bit or 64-bit.
I think this confusion is microsoft's fault, they should have clearly labeled versions of Windows 7 32bit and 64bit, like Windows 6 is 32 and Windows 7 is 64bit. Customers will not be happy when they buy 8gb of ram or 3tb hard drives only to find out their new Windows 7 computer can't use it.
"XP is 9 years old and Win7 is a very good replacement for newer machines,"
Because there's a lot of hardware out there that does not have drivers for Windows 7
For example, there are no USB streaming drivers for Sony Digital8 camcorders. Sure, these are older (2000-2007) tape-based digital camcorders, and you could argue "Make them buy new!", but if you're buying new camcorders along with new operating systems it can get very expensive very fast.
Ultimately you're correct, over time it makes more sense to just go with Windows 7 as 16 and 32gb of ram becomes the standard and programs are written to take advantage of the space while 32-bit XP is limited to 4gb, but in 2010 there's still a lot of hardware not Windows 7 compatible, and compatibility modes only go so far.
Or kickstarter staff, because they get 5% so it's in their best interest to keep their cash cow Diaspora golden.
But all is not well in the Kickstarter camp as you can see from the Kickstarter Sucks page:
"Thanks for taking the time to share your idea. We look for projects that have a well-developed, creative focus. We wish you the best of luck, but this isn’t right for Kickstarter. Thanks again for writing and good luck!
Best, Cindy"
whole story available here. I understand their need to be selective, but I don't see Diaspora to be any more developed or creative than that site.
Shame there isn't a better video of it because the game is top-notch, I've literally spun in circles trying to shoot fish. Glad to see someone's using the idea for medical purposes.

I suppose all of this is a mute because the LGA 1156 platform and LGA 1366 platform are being discontinued next year, so if you don't already have a i7 compatible motherboard you'd be buying a board that won't be compatible with any cpus made 7 months from now. I wouldn't buy a i7 cpu unless intel started selling them for $50, while AM3 boards available now are compatible with future 16-core cpus
Sorry, I have the Samsung CLP 315, not the 310 as I previously mentioned

'Tis good to be a patent troll
Why do we have patents on life-saving techniques? Can you imagine if there was a patent on washing your hands or stitching a wound?
One question: Have you found Mr. Glass yet?

I'm sorry but this is a case of too little too late.

Actually that's a list of the "10 silliest changes that will likely be in the new Texas textbook curriculum."
Notice the likely, meaning they don't have a clue and they're making it up.
Next week on Newsweek: NEWSWEEK's guide to the 10 silliest Aliens that will likely come down from outer space in the next 12 months.
Yeehaw dat be some mighty fine reportin' der Newsweek!

So this is Rivia Fishopolis but for cockroaches.
It's for Windows Mobile cellphones with cameras, and it displays what the camera sees with fish swimming around and crosshairs to shoot the fish. If you move your phone it continues to show whatever the camera sees, and the fish "move" into the path of the crosshairs.
Shame there isn't a better video of it because the game is top-notch, I've literally spun in circles trying to shoot fish. Glad to see someone's using the idea for medical purposes.
