  1. Re:In my opinion, 2.4 sucked a lot of fun out of i on The Changing Face of World of Warcraft · · Score: 1

I never wanted to raid or do any of that stuff. I leveled to 70, doing instances along the way to get better gear. Now I'm at the point where to get better gear than what I have I either have to a) grind badges b) get PUG to do heroics lasting 3-5 hours and *maybe* get a drop I can use c) grind PVP d) grind dailies. I love doing the quests, but none of the quests will give me any gear upgrades any more. The dailies were fun initially, but seriously they get old fast. I just canceled my account.

  2. Arrogance of Google Recruiters on Google Adjusts Hiring Processes · · Score: 3, Interesting

I've had a similar experience to what many posted here. I had a phone interview with a fairly qualified technical manager who wanted me to debug Javascript over the phone from a website she had given me. Ok, no problem. Then she starts asking me about technologies and languages that 1) aren't on my resume at all, and 2) have nothing to do with the job I'm applying for. After stating these facts many times, she came back with "oh we're looking to hire you for a different job, not that one." Uh....considering I had none of the qualifications of what she was actually talking to me about and all of the qualifications of the job which I had initially applied for, I cut the conversation short. Then a few months later my husband got an email from a Google recruiter (we were able to verify the email address, name, and the fact that it really was sent from a Google Recruiter) that basically said: "John, we're hiring. You interested?" The response he sent back was: "Dave, no".

  4. Nothing New - Same Problems Since Release on On World of Warcraft's Network Issues · · Score: 1

It's amusing to constantly see articles like this, because they've been having network/server issues since the game was released, back in November '04. After putting up with it for 4 months at that point, we canceled our accounts, waiting for the day when it wouldn't be a problem anymore. 6 months later, we reactivated, only to cancel 2 months later for the same reasons. It's honestly disgusting that this is still going on, but as many other people have said, the only way to let them know is to stop paying.

Being told an upper level manager has "resigned' usually means they were given a choice to voluntarily leave or to get fired. Most usually choose the first option. Something with keeping their dignity or whatever.

  7. Mindstorms great for education on Lego Mindstorms: What Went Wrong? · · Score: 4, Interesting

In a computer class I taught to middle school kids last year, I was the lucky recipient of a grant to outfit the whole class (7 groups worth of kids) with Mindstorms. I spent a semester teaching them not only the basics of Mindstorms, but how to program, how to debug, how to test, and all the other basics for computer programming. They had a blast doing the different projects, and I've never seen these kids so engaged before. Several of them actually wanted to come in after school and work on their robots which is unheard of. This is sad if Lego is cutting back on that and all but phasing it out.

  8. Teachers Rarely Change from the Generic Password on Generic Passwords Expose Student Data · · Score: 1

As the ex-technology administrator of a K-8 school in northern CA, I can tell you from first hand experience that no matter how many times I told teachers to change their password from the generic one they were given for things like email, 70% of them never did. (thankfully I had the administrators convinced to change theirs immediately) Basically even now if you know the name of some new teacher in the district, you could probably get into their email. It's scary honestly how little people realize how dangerous keeping the generic password is.

So this gets reported, but for obvious reasons Blizzard neglects to mention the fact that like 20 servers currently have queues to play, there's tons of server lag/crashes, and player disconnects (who then have to wait in line again to play), all this 8 months after launch.

  13. Cool idea, but quality and sound? on Tivo and Netflix Partner For DVDs on Demand · · Score: 2, Interesting

Sounds pretty cool, but what about those movies with DTS sound and higher quality? Is all that stuff going to be lost in the download? Netflix for me takes about a day or two to get a new movie (return it Tuesday, it's received Wednesday, get new one on Thursday), and for certain movies I wouldn't be willing to sacrifice my sound or quality just to get it somewhat quicker.

  14. Computers in School Should be Used Wisely on The Flickering Mind · · Score: 1

I'm a school's technology teacher (previously a software engineer), and I've been on and off researching this topic, and experiencing. If used right, computers can be a great asset in student learning. The best example I've seen so far is the use of a graphic organizer (Kidspiration for example) to let the special education kids give themselves a voice. These are kids who have trouble writing paragraphs due to their disabilities, but thrive when set down using Kidspiration. However the majority of teachers here just let the kids type up their essays on them which is sad. I've been trying to push them in a new direction, but some refuse/don't want to learn. Those that do use the technology in a creative/fun/educational way have engaged kids that are actually learning.

We have a 6th grade math teacher in our school I work with who's been using Squeak to talk about various math concepts. The kids are really into it and constantly engaged. They get into making their own objects and it's a great jumping off point for me to teach them some rudimentary programming skills too.
