This has nothing to do with lag at all. It's the matchmaking servers and such. The ONLY advantage PSN has over Live is that it's free. Otherwise it's inferior in pretty well every way I can think of from the store, to the messaging and matchmaking.

No, there is no SLA for Live. I too wonder what these jackasses expect. Want to bet that one of them knew a lawyer and mentioned this and the dollar signs started flashing in the lawyers eyes. I mean there aren't many bigger targets than MS and they might even settle just to get rid of a nuisance suit. In the end lawyers fees will take the vast majority of anything recovered. Remember the Netflix lawsuit where people ended up getting a month of "free" service on the more expensive tier, but the lawyers walked away with millions. Got to love the US where any problem can be fixed with a lawsuit.

Oh please, it's a freaking gaming service. It's not an essential service like the phone and it's not a passive service like cable TV. It's amazing to me that when everything works no one says a thing, but have an outage and everyone crawls out of the woodwork to bitch. I've been on Live since the Xbox 1 beta and this is the longest outage they've had in over 5 years. I've had ISPs in the past that were worse than that. My cable VOIP service was out for 3 days and I mean totally out and I had to bitch and complain to get any kind of compensation from them. If you add up what you pay for Live and divide it by the days there have been issues it comes out to less than $5.00. Only an idiot would sue over something like that.

And it's too bad. I love bonus features and right now HD-DVD is where it's at. Also, as much as peopel around here hate MS, Sony is a fucking media monster and if BR wins like it seems to be you can bet that they are going to keep BR prices artificially inflated for as long as possible. They have to recoup their losses from the PS3 somehow (yes, I know they are different divisions).

It isn't just software from what I've heard. 1.0 profile players are also missing the capability to decode a second stream to do things like PiP and that can't be resolved with a firmware update.

PC gaming is a platform, the Xbox 360 is a platform, the Wii is a platform. They are all separate. Let's be more specific then. Windows PC gaming. Steam is NOT the equivalent of Live on the Windows platform, it's close, but it's not the same. Live is an overall experience with Friends, voice/text/video chat and messaging, demos for all XBLA games, movies and TV, Gamerscores and being able to compare to your Friends and others. On Steam you can do some of those things, but it's only for Steam supported games. I can't message my friend playing Crysis and ask him if he wants to jump on for a game of CoD4. As for the DOC Box thing my mistake, I forgot they took that route and it's a poor choice driven purely by making it as cheap as possible for them to package the game instead of using a decent Windows native exe.

I totally disagree. You sound like someone that hasn't used the Live service or one of the many that saw it at a friends house or what have you. You are being ridiculous in equating console and PC as one platform. It's valid to include all modern PC games under one umbrella, but to talk about Live across multiple consoles is just a misleading argument. Live is a closed system on one platform. And if you look at it that way what I say is correct. ALL 360 games support Live. As for Steam supporting all PC games? Yeah, call me when that happens. As for BC, guess what the PS3 can't claim 100% compatibility and neither can Steam. The only reason Steam supports games like Doom (which BTW runs with a Windows exe and not DOS emulation) is that they sell it. I have no issue paying $50 (or less) a year for what I get on Live because it works extremely well the vast majority of the time. Hell, look at the mish mash of PSN and then ask if Live is a value. Steam is cool and I have supported it from the start, but it's still not Live and it won't ever be because of the limited number of games it supports.

Blah, blah, blah, the same old tired rant from an ignorant PC gamer. I game on pretty well every platform out there on a regular basis and there is NOTHING that comes close to the slickness and universal integration of Live. It was good on the Xbox, but it's seriously fantastic on the 360. Show me anything on the PC that allows universal friends, voice chat, messaging, score comparison, achievements, etc. on the PC without having to cobble together a bunch of different applications that all your friends need to grab as well. It's truly plug and play online gaming.

From people I know that work on Live they actually can draw on other MS servers (MSN and such) if needed for things like popular demo downloads and have in the past. I don't know if the same applies to log on and matchmaking servers. So their network is scalable to a certain extent.
