The Scarlett Letter is a friggin' novel. Haven't we learned any thing from Interview with a Vampire? you might as well ask.
As most people do not live in a state of paranoia and fear, I would posit that the most Americans you have referred to are those who are paranoid and believe the country is in a constant state of paranoia and fear when it is not.
"Yes, there is the problem of recidivism, but I think that is exacerbated by this kind of thing."
How? So far, it's only your opinion. Mine is it does not exacerbate recidivism.
"...remember that no code is ever completely bug-free..."
What? I've seen and written plenty of code that was 100% bug free. Programming is not math. It uses math, but it's the same mistake of thinking math defines the world. Now, if you're talking about a system or large application, I'll buy in. But even there, you have to speak to the relative impact of the bug. I mean, in terms of pedantry, even a friggin' typo in a message is a bug.
No kidding! For Christ's sake, where have these sloppy writers been for the last forty years? It's not like quality coding techniques are anything new. Client interviews with textual/graphic feedback and an ongoing demonstration combined with clean code written for the next person who will look at it; been doing that since the afore mentioned Apple times as well.
The continuous feedback of easily understood information as to what the design is and where you are goes a long way to keep the client from becoming concerned and thinking it's a waste. It's actually a method for speeding things up towards a positive end.
"Generally you're supposed to pick a worthy mate, not have it picked for you..."
Nowadays and in some countries, sure. Most of history and the world, it's been otherwise and they did just fine. Mail-order brides worked out OK too. Your premise is shaky.
Do some actual reading. There was no 'explosion', except in the sense of leaving fossils behind because deposition of hard materials evolved. Those forms have precursors from the Ediacaran period.
The magnitude of the error is grossly different. While the Encyclopedia may give a date or location incorrectly, the Wikipedia will have wholesale fabrications designed to convey bogus meaning.
No contest as to which is the more reliable reference.
Your opinion would be based on what, other than your -- opinion?
You are absolutely wrong about people's instincts. We are notable in that we have virtually none. As to instincts -- it's flight or fight.
If the only cause an effect that the mind has been exposed to is, "I see people fight, then I see them being okay and a little sore afterwards.", the brain on a primative, instinctive level will start to believe that is really all that happens.
Except, of course, that virtually 100% of the population has been in fights as kids and knows from personal experience it's more than 'a little sore' afterwards.
By the way, almost forty years martial arts here.
Really? Electricians, welders, construction foreman, plumbers; all of those are jobs requiring college? Each one of which can be entered by becoming an apprentice and each one of which will pay over 50K/yr to an experienced worker. You too good to do that? Maybe collect garbage? Got a friend who does that for $25 an hour. Or, is that too lowly for you?
Have you actually worked yet? 'Cause it don't sound like it.
You also have to admit that science can describe the "How" but not the "Why". You can describe how the universe was created through the Big Bang, but you can never say WHY it was created because that is an article of faith.
Actually, it's an article of presumption. It presumes a 'why'.
You are incorrect. Registration prior to infringement is not required. Copyright is not about money. Those that think so are being shallow. It is about the right to control distribution of your work.
The fact that they used sex hormones makes the results skewed at best. Give me the sex hormone used and the percentage of opposites that followed. Better yet, don't use sex hormones at all, just cockroach body odor and see what happens.
At best you are disingenuous. A web page is put up on the internet for the specific function of being viewed. It is analogous to posting a flier on a public bulliten board. A wifi can be set up by third party techs in a house for family use. It is reasonable to expect others to not trespass.
Welcome to the 21st century, where it's considered a felony(by cops and judges) to turn on a standard wifi enabled computer running Windows.
Shoddy attempt at spin, there. In each of your links, the perp was purposely sitting outside a hub and creating traffic, knowing he was siphoning bandwidth and money. An automatic detection is not the same as traffic.
Um, I do not think that word means what you think it means.

We need to adjust our direction of civilisation away from more toys and gadgets to higher quality human interactions and more meaningful labour.
Such as the computer you're using to browse the completely pertinent to human interaction site SlashDot? That kind of "meaningful labour"?
Here's a tip. Lead the way. Some will follow. Not me, but some.

Would you pay seat x 400 = price, to see it? If not, set your TV up at one end of the garage. Facsimily.

Well said.
...you'd be an idiot to cite it in a paper.
That is sufficient. To provide rationale is superfluous.
Oh, please. Abusers are drawn to subway walls too. But you do nail the crux of WP's problem. Catching and identifying the abusers.

I use Firefox almost exclusively for web browsing. Never a crash. Not once.
Uh, fuck you on the political remark. Conspiracy nuts are across the board, 9/11 anyone?

Um, no. That is one definiton. From Random House Webster's Unabridged:
3. an inaccurate or false statement.
If you say the world is flat, you're lying. You're just not doing it to decieve if you believe it so.

Very fine piece of rationalization.
