Why would you? If you don't really understand it, it's just not one of your characteristics. You have other strengths.

When I listen to music, or look at certain art, I sometimes get a bodily response. Hairs stand on the back of my neck, or I get a shiver up and down my spine. Just says I have some sort of sensitivity to this kind of stuff.

If you don't, then you don't.

All the latest material by David DeAngelo is very good. It's available on torrent sites, if you're tight on money. He had a name as a "pick up artist", i.e. stupid, manipulative tricks instead of honest character building, but that's not the case anymore. The stuff by Love Systems is very good too, with a systematical approach that suits me (as a geek) perfectly. Their guide is called Magic Bullets and basically it's a step-by-step guide. If you need a hand, check out the forums at The Attraction Forums.

If you're a USian, there are a lot of master classes which take you by the hand and teach you all the social skills you need. They're given either by one of the above mentioned parties, or any number of small businesses that are in this market too.

Certainly some geeks could give a rat's ass about how they appear to others, so they come off as anti-social, but that's often by choice.

Funny thing is, if they choose to be social, then a geek would probably hit the mark. I've seen some friends of mine turn 30 and say, "I'm sick of this life as a single, I'm going out". Took a bunch of books on socializing, being yourself around women, etc, and they broke the code. They either have strained backs/hips or have found a woman for a stable relationship.

I'm convinced that geeks, who often have enough intelligence, can learn social skills very easily just by checking the available documentation.

Via my smartphone, I 'friend' her on Facebook. Next morning missus pulls open my laptop, logs STRAIGHT into Facebook and sees the message from the girl "Hi, great party last night!".

I learned there's no denying the primal fears that run through a woman's mind when it comes to other women. You can say 'get rid of your SO' and I actually agree on that one (we split up), but still -- careful with this shit.

More on topic: the example above both shows the power and the weakness of Facebook. It works very powerfully, but on the other hand, it's JUST A FUCKING WEBSITE. It's not even selling anything real.

Here in The Netherlands, we had T-Mobile as the sole distributor of the iPhone. Since one or two months, the other carriers offer the iPhone as well. Problem is, they don't always specify what works and what doesn't. For example Vodafone doesn't offer Visual Voicemail. I think this is a very nice feature and if it's missing, this should be well-noted. Other carriers offer them with a very tight data limit, which makes watching Youtube and the evening news, or using Spotify, uninteresting.

So I applaud the fact that this freaking phone is available but I'd suggest other slashdotters that they are careful and look at the whole package. And there's something else as well: there's a new iPhone expected around June. Wait a little bit for a discount, or get the latest model.

To suggest there's not much work behind it, well, you start thinking about the organization (in manpower as well as capital) necessary for running a publishing system.

Such a system needs a petabyte-sized database system system, including (S)FTP/rsync/tunneled/VPN'ed connectors which connect to many different kinds of users. These users need a rights management system for printers, typesetters, authors, reviewers and their managers. The content themselves can be in all sorts of different stages, from scanned hand written (yes, some profs write their papers by hand) to peer-reviewed to print ready, and this has to be reflected in the database. A helpdesk is necessary to handle the user management, a sales desk is necessary to talk to customers, and purchasers to handle printer and typesetter relations.

Sure, there's good money to be made. But you also need to make a good amount of costs.

The scientific literature world is pretty strange. Usually you pay around 90$ per page to get your article published in a paid journal. The journal doesn't have to do much for that. The reviewers work for free so they only have to send some letters around and do the typesetting. To have the article 'in the open' you pay a staggering 3000$ for which they do nothing! Amazing

That's pretty short-sighted. I've helped building a system for a well-known publisher which "sends some letters around" as you so succinctly describe. We've worked for it for two years, with a 10+ people team at the project peak.
