Well, we can debate if the fruit of monopolies has benefited consumers: [list of inventions/achievements follows]
Have you ever stopped to think about how luck was a great part of how successful much of these inventions were? And how it might not have been caused by the inventor having a monopoly in a certain market?
So -- UNIX was invented at the right place, at the right time. Why? Because the whole world saw the need for a relatively easy to use multi-user, multi-tasking operating system.
Agreed, it's a totally hypothetical/academic question, but nevertheless I often ask myself: is there really a causal relationship here? Or do I just want to see one?

Weird that you stick to SharePoint. I would have guessed that you had first migrated the backend to OSS, and only after that, the desktop. Did you do it the other way around?
That's pretty interesting, because I find the current integrated cameras sorely lacking even for simple pics. I have a 3G iPhone and recently, I snapped a couple of pictures of my girlfriend's Master's thesis defense. I let them print on standard 10x13 cm (4x5.1in) paper by a photo printing service and boy -- what a disappointment. They looked blocky with lots of artefacts. Anyone who defends the iPhone camera should really send a couple of his pics to a photo printing service and be appalled by the result.
It was only a decade between Michael Milken and Enron. And look how many kudos Milken gets for his philantrophy these days. 6 months in jail and they didn't take his money away.
Well, he did pay 900 million or so. So part of his money was taken away.
Chinese have been able to buy pirated copies this month for just 20 yuan ($2.93) each
In my experience, a bit of haggling and threatening to walk away will bring the price down to 10 yuan. Assuming half goes to the retailer, that leaves about $0.73 for Bill and his gang of merry robbers:-)
assume the glass is low-e although VW didn't describe it as such.
I have the same glass in my VW. I checked the manual and it says the following: "This part includes an unknown glowing substance which fell to Earth, presumably from outer space" and a bit lower on the page "Do not taunt happy tinted glass"
Have you looked at what Talari Networks (http://talari.com/) is doing? I'm pretty sure their products do EXACTLY what you're talking about. Might be pricy for you, but it should do the trick.
I was wondering what pricey is, and it turns out that the smallest appliance costs $4K, with the biggest one costing up to $30K.
I did run into Office not running, but then everything else wasn't loading correctly that required a hard shutdown (Mac OS X's shutdown just sat there too).
That sounds like a disk problem to me. Better check the status of your harddisk. I know it doesn't sound like that, but I've seen two Linux boxes misbehave like that and when I checked the logs, it showed input/output errors to the harddisk.
This device really sucks. They forgot the most important thing. It needs to have a cover, and it needs to have the words "Don't Panic" in large, friendly letters on that cover.
There is a hoax running especially in Europe, +358 [...] Once you get a "ring" from that line or tricked calling it, your phone bill will be doomed. I speak about thousands of dollars (euros) here and you can't get that money back.
I never understood this line of reasoning. The situation is as follows:
Phone company bills you $HIGHBILL
You disagree with the bill, but say "OH NOES I HAS TO PAY" and then proceed to pay??!
You sheeple are owned by the cooperations.
Two months ago, I got an incorrect bill. I proceeded to pay the amount that I thought was correct, and wrote them a snailmail note saying why the bill was wrong. Of course, it got ignored and I received reminders, which I returned with a copy of said note. Two months later, the phone company called me, apologized for the inappropriate behaviour and sent me a corrected bill.
C++ has a lot of properties, but "simple" is hardly one of them.
We use Qt at my job for creating servers, daemons, interacting with hardware as well as doing GUI stuff. You don't really need to use the fancy C++ stuff, it's OK to just use the Qt classes and be done with it. Our code almost looks like Java, so simple.
This type of squatting is even nastier than domains, because there is no such concept as a top level domain. So with domains, there would be no problem if there is already a domain called ajax.com if you have a local soccer club called Ajax. You'd just register ajax.nl or something.
The App Store knows about regions -- there are five regions in the app store. But this division is not across application names themselves. The app store does have another division: app category. Perhaps one solution would be to let apps have the same name, but only one in each category.

Well, you might want to, but the financial regulator might raise an eyebrow over it.
OoooOOOoo damnit I HATE when the financial regulator comes and does, like, *Spock eyebrow raise* on us.

That's all we need. More planets.
Save the planets! Collect them all! Then strip-mine them!
the alternate Apple API for iTunes is intentionally crippled to make any competing media device difficult to deal with from a users perspective.
Can you back that up with some links?
It should also not be possible to anonymously put mail in mailboxes. The harm that is done through postal mail is incredible!
Yeah, I'm sarcastic here.
put an order form for a self-published book on your site. the self-publishing business is well-established and straightforward
end of story
no need for a publisher and all that legal cruft
A publisher will pay you an advance, which allows you to write the book in the first place. How would you go about that?
except for the flash based ones, slashdot is the most annoying to navigate on my iphone
Just create a separate account, then log into that account and do:
Then go to your iphone and log in with the new account. Simple as that.

$APP detects additional person approaching monitor. Autominimize firefox://ridiculous.pornsite.com; automaximize firefox://romanticweekendgetawayswiththewife.toshowherhowmuchyouloveher.com.
Whew, that was a close one.
That's a very bad idea. The proximity detector will not be able to distinguish between your girlfriend and your wife.

Yep, good guess.
Yes, it would be 'Wereld Wijde Web' but I can't remember the last time someone said that out loud :-)
That's just your language (which is arguably the dominant language). In my mother tongue, the 'w' is pronounced as [wey].
It appears the URL has an unprintable character
You're saying that character was gagged?

For those who don't know what IDA is: it's a disassembler and debugger.
