  6. studios letting their short-term lead slip on HP Backs Blu-ray Disc Technology · · Score: 1

It's a technological arms race. The studios get a new format (CD, DVD, Blu-ray) and it works to prevent piracy for a while until the consumer gear to copy it becomes cheaper. It sounds like HP is already announcing Blu-ray writers though, unlike when CDs and DVDs were first introduced and it took years to make them commonplace.

That's roughly six times the storage. The LOTR: The Motion Picture Trilogy (Special Extended DVD Edition) - no, I'm not making that name up - is 12 discs. Looks like you'd still need two BDs.

    Have you seen this [apple.com]?

Just this week I found a product called Kaleidescape. It seems to be the equivalent of storing all your CDs on your hard drive in iTunes. It's super expensive, but looks very cool. You just load your dvds into the reader and it burns it to the HD. You then put a networked player in every room and play any DVD at any time. The thing is, it seems like it would promote piracy. Why buy a dvd when you can just rent it from Blockbuster and load it to your system? ;) This would make it all too easy to do that.

Here's a review on that system. (Scroll down.)

    1) Do you watch movies at all, in theaters or at home?
    2) Are you happy to watch whatever movies happen to be shown on tv or do you want to pick what and when to watch movies?

IMHO, just get a stand-alone DVD player. Then get a console if you still want one. Especially connected to a HDTV, progressive scan and component outputs are a must. The new model PS2 has both, but in my experience a stand-alone DVD player is better as far as usability goes. Best Buy offers a Samsung model with 1080i HD Upconvert and MP3 Playback to take advantage of the HDTV's higher resolution. Of course there are cheaper players out there, too (for $30-$50).
