But it's all meaningless without freedom. Get a clue. There's a damn good reason oceans of blood have been spilt for it.

Freedom hasn't been won so the RIAA can sue a kid for 98 billion.

  2. Here's what's really sick... on RIAA Seeks Estimated $97.8 Billion From MTU Student · · Score: 1

I want to know what sane judge would ever take this case? How could you be such a boob to believe that one person, a student no less, could cost anybody 98bn in lost revenue?

Is it just me, or do RIAA lawyers have absolutely zero grounding in reality? I guess when you deal with nothing but vaporous "intellectual property" all day, you kind of lose your hold on things.

But by god do NOT start championing the cause of someone that nobody really knows anything about (hell, for all we know he actually COULD be a terrorist) because then it really weakens your argument against the wrongs that were committed against Mr. Mitnick.

I just wanted to point out that if you are an American citizen, you still have rights, before and after proof of guilt is established -- especially before. Due process applies to the guilty and the innocent alike.

  7. I Am Not Sure How To React on Broad Bills to Protect 'Communications Services' · · Score: 5, Insightful

It seems to me that the likelihood of these bills getting passed is next to nothing (of course, one can never be so sure). They were clearly introduced by technology-clueless law makers, but once they are subject to a vote, their silliness should become obvious. So I am not entirely afraid that they will succeed. If they do pass, other states are likely to pick up and follow the trail.

What is really scary to me is that, even though these bills were introduced by the ignorant, the fact that lots of legislators had the mind to introduce them in the first place is shocking. Particularly on the note of encryption, this is largely unconstitutional and hopefully, if ever passed, these bills will be challenged by (financially) enabled individuals.

How can such a thing even hold up when it not only criminalizes most existing telecom infrastructure, violates the 4th Amendment by tangent? Of course, we do live in a DMCA-cursed USA...

When I first saw the title for this story, I thought that the GameBoy Advance SP was being compared to a piece of artillery.

If that had been the case, I would have been very interested in seeing an analysis as to how the two "stand up to each other".

Alas, this is one more GBASP (almost "gasp") that will live to see another day. You'd think that with a new revision of a piece of hardware, they'd get some things right! Unfortunately, they found new ways to fail.

  11. I really wish things would pick up... on State of the E-nion · · Score: 5, Interesting

Evas is the technology in E17 that can really turn heads. For the uninitiated, it's a display library that abstracts the pixels, handling hardware accelleration and optimization for you. The concept is very similar to Quartz Extreme on OS X (except I don't see any of the functionality of Display PostScript).

We really need Evas and the rest of E17 to get mature -- it's something that can potentially make Linux desktop technology take off in a big way. Think about an OpenGL accellerated composited windowing system. That would lend itself to all sorts of interesting possibilities for desktops.

For one, we'd certainly get rid of a lot of the ugly artifacting and flicker that you see with Qt and GTK today (assuming they could somehow be ported). While a lot of that could be fixed with double buffering, you still wouldn't get all the benefits of Evas.

If you wanna see what I mean, you can go and download only the Evas package and run a small test suite. If you've got an OpenGL accellerated graphics card, you're in for a real treat -- this stuff is incredibly cool.

Now only if they would finish it!

  12. Anything revolutionary? on Mandrake Linux 9.1 (Bamboo) Is Available! · · Score: 1

We've seen major Linux distros increase their version numbers rapidly over the past year, but have there been any serious innovations? It seems to me that the average Joe User still cannot do an installation entirely by himself. While the UIs have seen a lot of improvement... even distributions like Mandrake are still at a high technical level. Of course, it's not like most people can do a Windows installation by themselves. MacOS X certainly pulls this one off. ;-)

  13. Can we apply this to games like Everquest? on Deathmatch for Dollars? · · Score: 1

There should be a scheme for MMORGS where the better you play, the less money it costs per month to maintain your account -- possibly using a similar scheme. Or perhaps there would be a reward bounty for defeating certain enemies or completing certain goals. "Defeat the dragon terrorizing the village and get $5 bucks off this month." Could add a neat mercenary element to many online games. :-)
