Like many posters here I have been using 'AJAX' since way before it was called that (heck it wasn't that long ago that if you suggested doing 'AJAX' type stuff here on Slashdot you would have been bombarded with "OMG your using an ActiveX control!" comments).
I'm glad XAML and XUL et. al. are getting a mention here. I've been playing a bit with the MS beta's of WPF (Avalon) and it is impressive what it can do (as is XUL and all the other similar technologies, but from the demo's I've seen so far they can't quite match the visual eye-candy of XAML) Given how little extra "Web 2.0" can do (heck is Google maps the best we can do? That would have been laughable as a client app 10 years ago!) I think it won't be very long before we enter "Web 3.0".
When Vista finally ships (yeh yeh) how long is it going to be before 80% of the user-agent strings hitting your web server contain ".NET CLR 2.0.50727; Avalon 6.0.5070; WinFX RunTime 3.0.50727" as mine currently does? Not to mention all the XP users who will get it from WindowsUpdate automatically.
What will happen then is all the non-business sites that currently have a "flash" and "non-flash" version will in the future have a Rich Client Platform (XUL / XAML / or whichever technology wins out) version and a Plain Old Web (POW) version based on your user-agent string.
The simple fact is that business users want think client features, a thin client deployment model and a web type development model for depoying enterprise applications, home users want "flash like" whizz-bang for a lot of sites they visit and "Web 2.0" delivers neither of these. It will be very short lived.
The most interesting thing about this story is that this tool isn't implemented as a web application. Just goes to show that even the might google are constrained by the limitations of the web browser.
Forget proper CSS support / transparent images / etc and all the other trivial rubbish people bitch about on slashdot as to the way forward for web applications, they are *nowhere near* good enough.
We'll both get modded to hell for saying it, but it is true.
After seeing ROTS I went home and watched ANH for the Xth time and all I felt was that I really wanted to see it remade, not just to the modern standard, but to include more backreferences as well!/me runs...
I agree totally, but I think it would really *need* IE7 support to take off. If it was just supported by FF then few sites would take advantage of it for obvious reasons. If *both* FF and IE7 supported it then it really would take off in a big way.
I suspect (and hope) IE7 will have inbuilt support for the entire.net api library and possibly avalon et. al. Maybe even client side c# or any other.net front end language? Soon we can all code web apps in COBAL.net:D
Seriously though, DHTML + javascript + css have long since had there day for powerful web apps. If maps.google.com is the best the world can manage in web apps then I welcome a richer client side environment in IE7. Maybe Mozilla XUL support as well?
Very impressive but all those XMLHTTP requests will soon add up, i'd guess 50x more costly in terms of bandwidth than a "traditional" online map.
I wonder if they use some sort of custom HTTP server (and possibly custom TCP/IP stack) which can be tuned for the type of traffic this app will generate?
On a serious note, The cell misses the point, we don't NEED any more CPU power, what we need is existing levels of power but without the need for excessive cooling and the fan noise that goes with it (I can hardly type this over the noise of my P4 3.0) !.
Fast, Silent and power efficent is what's needed next.
"Some will no doubt be turned off by the fact that DRM is built into the Cell hardware. Sony is a media company and like the rest of the industry that arm of the company are no doubt pushing for DRM type solutions. It must also be noted that the Cell is destined for HDTV and BluRay / HD-DVD systems, any high definition recorded content is going to be very strictly controlled by DRM so Sony have to add this capability otherwise they would be effectively locking themselves out of a large chunk of their target market. Hardware DRM is no magic bullet however, hardware systems have been broken before - including Set Top Boxes and even IBM's crypto hardware for their mainframes."
Checkout the SDK code released today, it has loads of references to TF2:
(77):// Only support prediction in TF2 for now C:\MyMod\src\game_shared\baseviewmodel_shared .h(78 ):#if defined( TF2_DLL ) || defined( TF2_CLIENT_DLL ) C:\MyMod\src\game_shared\gamemovement.cpp(3990) :// Purpose: TF2 commander mode movement logic C:\MyMod\src\cl_dll\in_camera.cpp(434):// Do allow third person in TF2 for now
Scoring it as such simply because you are annoyed that someone would dare express the opinion that installing software on windows is easier that it is in a linux environment shows the moderator in a very poor light.
I only hope this is meta moderated correctly as unfair to stop this person moderating in future.
I am not the parent poster, nor do I know the parent poster.
...you need to buy the best gaming PC money can buy, overclock the hell out of it and then refuse to play any games on it except CS @ 800x600 with all the gfx options set to the lowest levels. Then, only then are you a 1337 gamer:D
Rimmer (Future): No, look, I'm you from the future. I've come to warn you in three million years you'll be dead.
Rimmer (Past) [Sarcastically]: Will I really!?!
Rimmer (Future) : Yes, unless you do somthing about it now.
Rimmer (Past) : What do you suggest? Give up white bread, more roughage?
Deadlock detected!
Something about "stuff that matters".
Is there a way to filter out stores from the homepage by keyword? AJAX would be on my filter list.
Hate to reply to myself, just wanted to point out I am aware Google maps user hidden iframes to do its magic, before someone points it out to me :D
This is going to sound MS fanboi-ish but...
:D

Web 2.0 is dead, Long live Web 3.0!
Flame away

Roll on Avalon et. al. integrated into IE.

Seriously, whats with the looooooooooong link?
Creative's sole goal this year is to take away some market shares from Apple's iPod. The company believes it to be a possible task, as iPod is limited to iTunes when it comes to purchasing music online and with Creative's products, you will be able to purchase music from major online vendors.
Indeed, I use linux and XP on this machine, and I just happened to be on XP when I read that story, enough to put me off ever trying their software.

Not the Quote of the Day Protocol as well!
We are all doomed now.
I remember DiskDoctor well, what a fitting end to such a wonderful utility!
I remember reading about it in an old Amiga magazine where they described it by saying:
"Caused more problems than it ever solved"
Which made me laugh at the time.
The parent post is NOT off topic.
