RFID and/or barcodes on drugs can prevent errors in hospitals which cause many deaths per year in the US (dont have actual stats handy). In fact, it will soon be a requiremen that all drugs be barcoded in hospitals. If a drug is scanned before it is administered, and that scan is compared with a scan of the patients hospital wristband, incorrect drug and dosages can easily be caught. Prescription orders can be entered into the computer and verified by electronic signature, also eliminating mistakes due to sloppy handwriting.
I don't know that you can say Apple is making more money off of this than Napster, when you don't know the details of the Napster deal. Maybe they have to pay less royalties - do you have any numbers to back it up? Granted, its unlikley they are making money hand over fist when apple is allegedly barely breaking even over iTunes sales, but that doesnt mean Napster is in the exact same situation. Plus, Napster makes money off of subscriptions, which Apple doesn't have.
Planning for drunk driving seems pretty likely to me. Hypothetically speaking of course, I know if I'm driving to a bar and planning to drink. I could just keep a box of balloons in the car and blow one up before walking in. I can't recall ever drinking by "accident"
While I don't advocate lying by any means, the fact of the matter is that having a number of short term jobs are often more than just bad luck. Witness the recent buyout of my company by another. One person was let go, not because headcount was too high, but because it was an excuse to eliminate dead wood. And if every company you work for goes out of business, maybe it isnt bad luck so much as poor choices on your part of companies to work for. My recomendation? Be honest, but also show that you learned from your mistakes.
And exactly how do you propose to do zero-gravity research on the moon? Granted, a moon base has its uses, but if funded properly from the start and with an adequate crew size, so does the ISS.

Younger Generation? Hmmm maybe I'm so old I'm turning senile. I used to read The Flash in the late 60s and early 70s, and I dont remember the constant eating from that era. Thanks for the info, tho.
Thats what they tought us in school (I was an Aero Eng major a lifetime ago). Interestingly, IIRC if you go really, really fast (hypersonic, > Mach 5) the shock wave becomes so narrow and close to the plane that sonic booms are no longer a problem. Its only around the low Mach numbers that you get these really wide shock waves that still have a lot of strength when they hit the ground.
No - if that were true we would have had flights from NY to LA via Concorde 40 years ago, bypassing urban areas on the way

Ever see the newer Justice League animated series? This is finally addressed. The Flash is shown as extremely skinny, and is constantly eating. Since he has super-speed, he can consume enormous quantities of food super-fast.
There is an important difference - people generally talk louder on a cell phone than in real life, especially if they are using one of those hands-free jobs.
I remember when 867-5309 first came out (or whatever the actual name of the song is). People who had that number were constantly harassed by young pranksters like myself calling and asking to speak to Jenny. According to the news, people who had that number were forced to change it due to the never-ending phone calls. Instant celebrity is not all its cracked up to be.
Is this a flame? Programmers cant form unions in the U.S., at least in practical terms. We'd just be fired and replaced. The US work week is usually well in excess of 40 hours, with no overtime. We get a paltry 2 weeks vacation a year, which oftentimes we are discourage/prevented from taking. Insurance costs are skyrocketing, including copays and out of pocket expenses. Profit sharing and stock options are from the last century.
There's always grad school - as Tom Cruise said in Risky Business - "Looks like University of Illinois!"
Seriously, it seems that the same problem/perception affects every generation - it was the same way back in the dark ages of 1986 when I graduated. Not everyone found their dream job right away, but by putting in effort and being flexible, people were able to get by. Myself, after not finding a job by graduation, decided to hang out in grad school for awhile and get my Masters. Good luck.
Interesting. I had the opposite experience on 9/11 (I don't live in NYC, btw). My landline was useless, all lines were busy, but I could use my cell phone as well as AIM (via DSL) to communicate with friends in New York.
Except, chances are someone in the room has a digital cell phone they can use to call 911. And all over the country, 911 systems are being upgraded so they can identify the location of the caller (which was a big advantage of using landlines to call for emergencies in the past)
I disagree. You can tell at a quick glance if the speedo needle is pointing, say straight up which you know to mean 60 mph. You can probably see this out of the corner of your eye without taking your eyes off the road. For a digital readout, you have to take that extra fraction of a second to focus on the numbers and see that they read a precise number like 59.2.
I have to disagree with that analogy - I'm looking at a (new) plain-jane calculator on my desk right now. Solar powered, from the office supply cabinet, does nothing but +-*/ plus the good old M+ and M- keys. They probably paid 99 cents for it.
That they are going from a fixed-width font (courier) to a variable-width font (Times). Columns of numbers, etc. won't line up as nice with Times, especially if the people creating the documents don't know what they are doing.
I don't trust Comcast - they have a tendancy to turn your cable off without telling you, just so you are forced to call them and they can upsell you on their new services. This happened recently to both myself and a friend of mine. In my case, I waited a few days to call because I thought the cable might come back on on its own. When I finally was forced to call, all they had to do was throw a switch and my cable was back on - they were just waiting for me to complain.
With any kind of promotion like this, they are expecting only a certain percentage of people to actually bother to redeem the botttle caps - if 10% redeem them, they only have to pay royalties for 10% of the songs in the give away. Now, more bottle caps will be redeemed then they counted on - this could end up being a very high price tag for Pepsi!

According to the article , the debt just matured - I'm only guessing, but if they paid it off early there may have been large monetary penalties.

I think that mysterious point in space is called "The Force"

At least they didn't post credit card numbers of the reviewers. Now THAT would be a bummer (and not really that unlikely a mistake/scenario).
Not so surprising, since both the coffee shop and BSG got the name "Starbuck" from the same source - the first mate from "Moby Dick"

Terminal velocity is what you would reach when you fell off said ladder.
