It exists to make money for its shareholders. Just because it's an internet company doesn't mean it's allowed to just sit there and spend cash. It has to make some, too, as long as it acts within the law. A public company can't just tell its owners (shareholders) that it's going to turn its back on a billion-person market, unless that's what its shareholders want it to do. At this point, the shareholders appear to be more interested in the cash, so these are the decisions that are made.
Don't like it? Don't buy Google. Or even better, buy a few shares and voice your opinion at the next shareholder's meeting. That's, perhaps, the most effective way of showing your displeasure.
I mean, isn't this just going to split up the market again?
Sounds like the alternative browser is afraid of alternatives. Funny, I thought we were supposed to like competition.

Dont' fall for it!
From now on, anyone who has one of these links in their sig gets -1 Troll from me. Wish I had mod points right now.
Can I take the opportunity to point out that faxyourmp is for UK citizens ONLY and should only be used to fax your own MP. It is not for international write-ins or mass lobbying.
I am personally responsible for the software on 67 windows computers at a university. I am jointly responsible for almost 400 of same.
B.F.D. I know that may seem like a big accomplishment in the academic world, but being the big man on campus doens't always mean shit. Where I work, 400 machines would be a margin of error, not something to brag about.
Aren't Mac people more likely than the general population to be artsy-types, socially-liberal, and homosexual? Does this mean that an IPod can turn you gay?:)
Just like Windows users are more likely to live in their parents' basements and work at the 7-Eleven on the corner.
Does this mean that Windows will make you a failure?;)
For instance, those snow white keyboards that look so cool when you take them out of the box. For those of you who have seen snow, you know how it looks after it has sat for a couple of days. The white keyboard is like that now. Beige and black hides the dirt so much better.
Fortunately, the rest of the world has better hygene habits than the average Slashdotter.
For instance, my wife has been using her snow keyboard for over a year and it is still perfectly white. You might try washing more often.
Sorry. Not everyone lives in their mom's basements. Some of us live in the real world.
Your argument is invalid because all of its points have been refuted successfully in this thread and elsewhere on Slashdot, the internet, and the real world.
Apple managed to make a computer that is both elegant and good at its task. Get over it.
There are people in this world with more money than you, and the right to spend it the way they want. Get over it.
Apple's products are not overpriced. It doesn't matter how many times you say it, it's simply not true. Get over it.
Some people have different product requirements than you do. Get over it.
I can't imagine spending that much on a gizmo. I use a $10 Sony Walkman. Works great. I also couldn't even begin to consider buying an Apple. People who have that much disposable income are a completely different market segment than the general population.
I can't imagine spending $10 on a Sony Walkman. I hum tunes in my head for free. Works great. I also coudn't even begin to consider buying a Sony. People who have $10 disposable income are on a completely different plane of reality than the general public.
Comparing eMachines to Apple is like comparing a Cavalier to a Jaguar. Both do the job. One is built better, works better, and does does the job with style.
It should be pretty easy for them to know which stores get which printers. It should also be possible to query a database to find out at exactly what date and time a particular model of printer was sold. It might even be possible to query to find out when a specific printer was sold. Then it's a simple matter of looking up the security video from the store, or a neighboring store, or a camera in the parking lot, or whatever. They won't have your address, but they'll have a picture of you carrying the printer, possibly your face, and maybe a vehicle.
Considering that the bulk of China's population has no real income let alone any ability to paticipate in air pollution
I think that's underestimating things. They have plenty of opportunity to create pollution, and do every day. Things like burning out the fields every year. Cooking with wood. Heating with low-quality coal. Diverting water from rivers for irrigation, lowering water levels.
Just because they don't have a factory doesn't mean they don't pollute. Remember, Los Angeles was already covered in smog when the Spanished first arrived in the area. It had to do with burning, wind, sun, and mountains. I don't think the Chinese are any less talented at mucking up the air.
50% of all species on the planet will be extinct in the next 50 years
People have been predicting similar catastrophes for decades... perhaps hundreds of years.
When I was in school, the teachers told us the Earth couldn't support more than 5 billion people. Well, we've beaten that by a billion.
In the 70's, there was all this talk of global famine wiping out entire continents by the 1990's. Didn't happen.
In the 80's, we were supposed to pollute ourselves to death by the turn of the century. Again -- didn't happen.
I'm not saying the 50%/50 figure you mention won't happen. But I'd like to see an authoritative source on it, not just some person rambling on Slashdot.
I'm not so sure about the significance of the content, what did they write/read in 19th Century?
The building I live in was built in the 1920's. I'll be able to read articles about it from the time when 28-stories was considered a marvel of engineering.
Great. Another fabulous Japanese phone that I can't use anywhere else in the world. When will the Japanese make their phones compatable with the rest of the world?
People on Slashdot complain about the U.S. being isolationist when it comes to cell phone technology. It's worse in Japan.
(BTW: If someone can point me in the direction of a GSM phone that will work in the US, Czech Republic, and Japan, I will be grateful.)
If my favorite badn is X, and iTMS doesn't carry them, the whole "it's easy" argument is sort of moot.
If it's your favorite band, then chances are you already own their CDs and will just rip them. I find iTunes much more useful for expanding my musical tastes in new directions than reinforcing what I already like.
In fact, in the United States there are rules that specifically protect taking pictures in public. It's what allows the media to take pictures of news events.
Or were you just talking-out-your-ass-American-bashing like the other anti-U.S. Slashdot zealots?
Actually, not anymore. You can order an international 800 number these days. They've been around at least for a couple of years. A lot of the large hotel chains have them.
Just out of interest, has anyone seen the Black iPod?
Its an abomination compared to the others, with its silly red central dial. I would have bought the black one if the dial fitted in with the black theme, or even if it was the same white as the other iPod dials.
The red dial isn't my cup of tea, either. But it's my understanding that it matches the cover art for the upcoming U2 album, which I have not seen.
Repeat after me: "Google is a business."

Why? If British people can be encouraged to interfere with the American political process, then why can't Americans do the same to the Brits?

Really? I never heard of anyone having a problem with it
You must be new around here.
I run a Mac, and even I know that SP2 will give a substantial number of Windows boxes the Hershey Squirts.
And another fix here.
Not true. Some iPods come with remotes. It depends on which model you buy.

I guess the only thing we can do is use older machines.
It's been a while since I fired up a dot matrix printer.
But I look forward to the smell of ditto ink next time I want to distribute unpopular speech.

Unfortunately, it's the soldiers who went home who're now shooting at the coalition soldiers.
Actually, not true. Most of those now engaging Allied forces are mercenaries and others from other countries, not from Iraq.
The Iraqis want the foreign fighters out of Iraq as badly as the Americans do. Perhaps more. They just want to move on with their lives.
Why the U.S.? The article is about the U.K.
