  1. Compleat vs complete on FreeBSD: The Complete Reference · · Score: 2, Informative

    > more like from the compleat-misspellings dept. ;)

Actually, "compleat" for "complete" in the titles of guidebooks is an ancient and revered practice, going back to this book.

I guess you learn something every day, huh?

  2. Some bad things, some good things... on The Two Towers DVD Release Dates · · Score: 1

The first movie was alright, but leaving the end hanging like that was horrible.

Actually, in that respect FotR was completely faithful to the book.

I agree that TTT has its shortcomings, though: laughable dialogue between Sam and Frodo and wa-a-ay too much fighting.

Gollum was great, though. Not to mention the pervy thrill I got from watching long-haired boys in chain mail!

And I still respect the films for "opening up" the books for those of us who have difficulty putting up with Tolkien's disregard for chronological narrative. At least thanks to the film I know in what order stuff happens without having to look it up in the appendices! ;)

  3. All good things come from .kr on Spector, Garriott on Games · · Score: 3, Funny

Popular Korean MMORPG? Just what we need! Not only will it have the brilliant gameplay of Everquest, but the great community of Battle.net!

And it will make you many *GREAT OFFERS* to *ENLARGE YOUR PENIS* in a character set your terminal cannot display...

  4. How to complain? on SDF Punted, Due to DDOS · · Score: 1

Is there a standard letter of complaint somewhere to send to the appropriate authorities? I don't have a clue as to what to say to whom and how, but I'd like to express my dismay at NWLINK's actions to someone in power. (I am in NL, by the way.)

  5. George's book on A Word a Day · · Score: 1

I always figured one book was more than enough for Dubya...

  6. Edo on Apple's Present: iTunes Supports Ogg Files · · Score: 1

    > Edo is short for Edoardo (Edward)

Actually, my name is just "Edo". Short for er... nothing. :)

  7. White van? on Keeping An Eye On Total Information Awareness · · Score: 5, Funny

IIRC, the A-Team drove a black van.

I pity the fool who doesn't know that! ;)

  8. Fritz Hollings? on Human-Mouse Hybrids? · · Score: 2, Funny

Isn't that how they made Fritz Hollings? By crossing a politician with Mickey Mouse?

  9. That's completely wrong on Micro Tetris · · Score: 1

For those who aren't familiar with the Dutch language, I can tell you that "vrije" (as in "Amsterdam Vrije Universiteit") means "free." That is, it's a university without tuition, funded by socialist tax policies (this is very common in Europe).

You couldn't be further from the truth: the "vrije" in "Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam" (that's what it's called) in fact reflects its historical beginnings as a break-away Protestant university, unfettered by curricular demands imposed by the government.

  10. Ridiculous on Operating Systems Are Irrelevant · · Score: 1

This is ridiculous. Do you suppose he got paid to write that thinly disguised ad for his own software? He never bothers to explain why his proposed way of information management spells the end of operating systems, either. Is the fact that I reorganize my bookshelves reflected in the shape of my books? My shelves? Me?

And I must say that I still find this vision of a life in which all sources of information you ever use are linked and archived for ever very, very scary.

Sometimes a man needs a clean break, if you know what I mean...
