Japan supports the US military forces in Japan with billions of dollars of aid per year to maintain our bases there. While it isn't as much as we spend domestically ($300 billion or so annually), it is more than nothing.
Also, Japan is going to be sending ground troops into Iraq soon, and they maintain a surface navy in the Persian Gulf to aid the US fleet, so they have broken out of their shell imposed by the US after WW2.
Used to be the basic economic unit. Funny how we are now afraid of it, and the only way to become successful is to work for some large nameless corporation.
I am still trying to get my laptop's sound card, PCMCIA NIC card, and my USB pen drive to work with Mandrake 9.2. I believe I will have to compile a new kernel to get these to work - 2.6.x, with support for these to work properly, but who knows until after I try? If not, I'm SOL and need to try another distro I guess...
I havent laughed this hard...

I haven't laughed this hard in years. Seriously, I had to do it. I googled. Now I truly regret it.
I suspect that environmental regulations don't allow them to simply dump raw methane (with other nasty gases) straight into the atmosphere from the waste plant, however. Considering the BIG PIPE sewer project in Portland has a pricetage of $300 million just for the West side, $1.3 million is a bargain to get some (basically) free electricity without building another damn or something.
So it looks like the only place where this will really have any use will the third world.
However, it's difficult to get expensive construction equipment and highly skilled operators on site. Third world countries, which are the ones that have severe housing shortages, typically don't have the money to buy a multi-million dollar house-extruder. If they did, they wouldn't need it in the first place. And they would probably have the money and time to have put in place building codes to prevent massive natural disasters, like those earthquakes we see in India all the time.
This will also be almost useless to use in a built-up highly dense city, like those in most of the world. Unless they like knocking other building around it to the ground, and it can do 3+ stories.
I COULD see a 200,000 unit housing development in Phoenix, Atlanta, LA or LV employeeing a few of them, however.
Additionally, you can't compare the United States to other countries.
Labor costs are tied into quality of life issues, all the junk that they own, and the developed nature of the country. People in the US buy more shit than most other countries in the world (certainly more than in Africa, China, or India), thus we have more monthly payments, taxes, and other stuff we have to support.
Because people make more money, and spend more money, the prices for everything goes up...because we have to pay ourselves to work maintaining this "economy."
It's really all just a vicious circle. When you introduce ultra-low cost labor in other countries, you are just circumventing all the built-in domestic costs for doing business HERE.
Eventually, you will probably be fucked, because people in other countries aren't any "stupider" than Americans. And they *really* want to get the cool shit we take for granted, plus they are used to working hard for next to nothing.
So...everyone is supposed to become employed in a specific sector?
In any given population, there are some people that are more adept at working at certain jobs than other people. For instance, some people are good at numbers and can work at computer programming. Others are not, and would rather cut off their left arm then work in programming or statistics simply becasue they hate numbers.
Similarly, business and/or analytical jobs do not appeal to those with creative tendencies, and vice versa. This is not even going near the problem with a lot of people who cannot get advanced degrees to enter a field.
This is completely the opposite of the idea behind sustainability. Importing goods and service from places thousands of miles away is ONLY profitable because of cheap transportation.
Once that price becomes too high, then the current economic model (global economy) must change.
Clearly you don't live in Oregon. We have teaming, hungry, masses of unemployed right here in my backyard. I think I may have one or two camping there right now...
7% + unemployment is a real bitch, lemme tell you...
I'm surprised no creationists or christians have made the argument that since Mars was never mentioned in the bible, it must not exist and therefore all of this NASA stuff is really a ploy by God to lead the nonbelievers astray and to hell.
Then again, thankfully they do not typically troll these waters.
Those are the nastiest computers I have ever seen. Whatever happened to the plain old gray cases? Or whoever has seen the customer wooden computer cabinets some guy made?
This just MIGHT be related to the very high rate of driving under the influence in New Mexico, and the high numbers of people killed by drunk drivers. In 2002, there were 215 traffic deaths related to alcohol.
Not only that, but in 2002, 17,419 people in the US died in alcohol-related accidents. In 2001, 500,000 people were INJURED in accidents involving alcohol.
Rights be damned. If everyone is being so ridiculously irresponsible with drinking, then YOU SHOULD NOT BE DRIVING A CAR! Stop whining, drink at home or get a damn designated driver.
I have talked to some of my friends who live in Tokyo and Seoul, and they get 10 mbs ethernet (cannot remember if it was fiber or not) to their home/apartment for around $10-$15/month (US equivalent).
Gee, I just love my QWEST 128/128 kbs dsl modem right now...
I use the old fashioned Ivory soap - normal, 100% pure. Incidientally, one case is only $2.99 if you buy from me now! Hurry and save...
Are you going to afford the higher-paying executives? I mean, you gotta cut the fat somewhere!
Gosh darn, we'd be lost without those high-paying executives!
Actually, gas prices are not at an all-time high.

Sounds like Mad Max!
All those piggies in the underground slop center producing methane for those wacky demo derby racers!
Oooh...I can see the future now...
If things really get bad, I'm going off grid in Saskatchewan.

Sure they could have built it...it just woul dhave been a major pain in the ass.
They built the Eiffel Tower in the 19th century, and that had to be precise within a 1/2" all the way to the top of the 1,000 ft. tower.
Now imagine creating the engineering plans for every cubic inch of THAT building!
