My school just ordered 30 and plans to get 30 more. A simple, inexpensive way to get devices into lots of students hands. For research and simple content creation it's fast and convenient. As a teacher I love the fact that they can be up and running in 30 seconds.
Man would you make a crappy parent. Sitting by your child's side at all times when they are on the computer. As a parent I give my kids freedom to explore without me hanging over their shoulder all the time. That's not to say I don't have limits for them, and keep an eye on them. The OP sounds like he has good options for his daughter. He trusts her and gives her freedom, but is trying to stop unwanted porn. Sounds to me like he's trying to find a very good option. I'm just sorry I can't help other then to suggest Adblock as it does a pretty good job.
The Call of Duty series has been my favorite of the FPS games on the PC. I couldn't wait for COD4 but after I installed it I wanted to take it back to the store. It was missing my favorite game type - Capture the Flag.
I've played hundreds of hours of a little known turn based Trek game called Birth of the Federation. I wouldn't say it was successful, (the company went out of business), but my friends and I have had many long nights battling as the different races. It is by far my favorite trek game.
But I teach Phyics and Computer classes. I also have 2 sons. Did I beat the odds? Or is it what I teach that makes the difference. Oh I should also mention that I started in Engineering and changed.
I really think the people who created this study, should study me. I have it all!
I really hate it when idiots pull numbers out of there ass. (99%???) There are enough legitimate statistics being warped, without people just picking numbers at random.
My own statistics:
I know 284 people who hunt. None of them has ever shot a person. Therefore 100% of the people I know don't use guns to shoot people. Therefore 100% of people only download legitimate files!
I am a teacher in a highschool in Canada. I teach physics, computer science, design studies and computer animation.
I'm really encouraged by the comments I've read in these posts. It's good to hear that most of you support the teachers you had. For the few people who don't, it's usually because they had a bad experience. This is usually usually due to a personality conflict with a bad teacher, or they struggled with the way teaching is done in our society.
Teachers aren't perfect, but sometimes it feels like society expects them to be. Most teachers I know strive to do the best job possible, and they would bend over backwards to help any student who wants to help themself. (Notice that I said MOST, not ALL.) The problem is that many students have no interest in helping themself. They want everyone else to do it for them.
I also agree that our society has become a world of blame everyone else, and take no responsibility for yourself. That's one of the most difficult things, as a teacher, to deal with.
I also switched to Tiny Tiny RSS and purchased the app for my phone in order to support the developer. I don't miss Google Reader at all.

I used tea to get off my coffee addiction. Then, since I hate the taste of tea, it was easy to wean myself off of it.
I've often wondered how we get away with drinking and driving in golf carts... Not that I'm complaining.

Everyone would still be angry no matter what Bill says. Because it's not, then everything is ok. BTW: I am a Linux guy... Making an observation...
