"Marilyn Hanson" is an obvious play on Marilyn Manson and the group Hanson. The GM didn't want to argue because it's bleeding obvious, and Taco's friend just wanted to be difficult for the sake of it to play martyr. "OMG, they took my name and couldn't find a specific celebrity with the actual name Marilyn Hanson! I'm being VIOLATED here!"
Slashdot didn't invent the idea of a blog. LiveJournal didn't copy from Slashdot.
It's not that easy to say "just leave," because Slashdot is for some reason treated as the top bastion of tech news, when it hardly posts tech news anymore. Just posting a link takes down a webserver. And the pseudo-science and half-baked commentary posted to this site as "news" gets adopted by newbies, and we end up with more misinformed assholes ruining the community.
Most of you don't even know what the OSS community used to really be like. It ain't what you see here on/. today.
It's his site, so that means users aren't allowed to complain? That's idiotic. It's like saying you can't complain about the food in a restaurant because it's the cook's restaurant.
Let's put it this way--you admit there are things about MySQL that disturb you. And you're surprised that people who care about the reliability of their data don't use a database that is disturbing in that regard and actively encourage others not to use it?
I don't know, but when it comes to copyright infringement on Slashdot, the following is true:
1.) In articles about GPL violations, copyrights are good and infringement is bad. Violators should be prosecuted legally, preferably by the EFF.
2.) In articles about games by people we like, copyrights are good and infringement is bad. Be sure to buy John Carmack's game!
3.) In articles about games by people we don't like, copyrights are bad and infringement is normal. No wonder everybody pirates! The games are so crappy! Never mind that I'm basically saying that people are purposely pirating crappy games!
4.) In articles about music and movies, copyright is absolutely bad and infringement is god. Making sure System of a Down doesn't get paid today is the best way to support artists! I'm so used to the convenience of downloading that I'm going to justify it by scapegoating a lobby group! The RIAA made me do it.
For those keeping track, we are on the following step in the Apple Product Cycle:
A minor, rarely occurring flaw in the device begins to be discussed in the Apple support forums. Whiny, artistic types post lengthy diatribes about how this terrible design flaw has made the device unusable and scarred them emotionally. Electronic petitions are created demanding that Apple replace the devices for free, plus pay for counseling to help traumatized users overcome their emotional distress.
I owned a pair of "scratch-proof" glasses. Putting those glasses in your pocket with your keys will, as I learned, still scratch them. Same with nano.
I wouldn't fear putting a nano in my pocket, but I wouldn't put it in there with change, car keys, or other things. Just like I wouldn't do the same for a Gameboy Micro or PSP (if I could fit it in there).
Think of all those years of "F/OSS" effort put into re-implementing someone else's game and putting new features on it, when that energy could have just been put toward creating an original franchise to showcase the power of OSS development.
It seems that OSS will forever be known as a clone source, not open source. From copying Windows to copying Civilization. Isn't there a game designer out there with original ideas? Oh, right, they go onto make commercial games in a real company while the cloners stay behind and complain in places like Slashdot and IRC.
For some reason, it's an incredibly popular meme here that the porn industry drives everything (probably from the myth that Betamax died because porn supported VHS...instead of the much simpler fact that Betamax had a limited 1-hour running time that is shorter than your average movie, and that VHS allowed consumers to record for 8 hours with decreased picture quality). But as in the linked articles, you can see that the entertainment media groups referred to are the big, mainstream groups like Warner.
Here, your post has been modded as Insightful instead of Funny, even though there's really nothing backing your statement as an insightful post. I thought it was obvious you were just making a joke.
To many of us, it was obvious for a while now that Blu-Ray was going to win. At first, HD-DVD was the superior format due to its support of MPEG-4, while Blu-Ray only did MPEG-2. Then Blu-Ray caught up and adopted all the codecs HD-DVD was supporting, making the only difference between them storage capacity. Blu-Ray's is much larger, so it was clear since then that Blu-Ray would win out. That's not even getting into the fact that the Playstation 3 will be using Blu-Ray discs.
Even Apple is backing Blu-Ray and is a member of the board.
I'm sure Indians wouldn't find being mistaken for Arabs especially funny.
I found it hilarious.
If you can't understand why that's not funny, I dispair for you.
Get over yourself. It's "despair."
It IS funny. Just like Phil Hendrie's bit about Arabs hiding out in Mexican communities because they look Cuban. The first sign of a troubled society is when they are unable to laugh at anyone or themselves.

It's common for Slashdotters to cover their ears when confronted with an argument they can't refute.
Television is hardly "emasculated" to conservative whims. Hello? Hollywood is the most liberal place in America.
Since when have shows like South Park ever catered to the whims of "puritanical christians?" This is just more lame, trendy conservative-bashing. It's the new trend of the left to preach tolerance all the time and yet be intolerant of religion and of opposing viewpoint. Jeez, just seeing a conservative opinion on TV aired without contempt makes these people think it's a Bush conspiracy. But anti-conservative stuff (aka The Daily Show) is a-okay.

Can't you write about, I don't know, tabs in IE7 or something? Who wants to hear about the multi-billion selling iPod? Isn't there another Windows vulnerability you can write about? Maybe another non-functioning "PlayForSure" device or removed Vista feature that already exists in OS X?
Sounds like you're just bitter that people are choosing a product they feel is superior.
Linux is portrayed on Slashdot as the underdog too despite powering most of the web's servers. This isn't 1999 anymore, dude.
Apple's marketing strategy is to provide products that fit into your life. If I'm a "duped minion" because my iBook can run circles around your Linux-based PC and do things your jaw would drop over, so be it.
Those products are coming out when...late in 2006! What, are we supposed to writing about a non-existent product? Besides, those products have been covered, and in almost every mainstream OS X Tiger review, they compared Tiger to the non-existent Longhorn as if it was a shipping product and not still two years away! Talk about bias. But what are you going to write about the new Internet Explorer. "It has tabs and increased security...uh...yeah." "MSN Search...well, it's getting more like Google."
Apple has been more productive in the past 12 months than Microsoft has in five years. They've also had tons more shipping products. What "new, cool technologies" is Microsoft putting out that you think we should be hearing about? You didn't even name any in your post!
There's no bias. It's just honest truth. Microsoft has very little to offer. To get your products written about, you have to, you know, actually ship products. Video iPods matter to people. iPod nanos matter. And you can buy them now. Vista is a bunch of catch-up technologies to OS X that are getting backported to Windows XP anyway. Forgive us if we're not as excited!

By your own reasoning, CmdrTaco should STFU and not even have posted this.
After all, it's Blizzard's "house," and they make the rules! He can leave! He doesn't own it!

How idiotic. This is the standard response when someone points out that MYSQL SILENTLY TRUNCATES DATA.
A database design class would teach you that such a database is not a reliable RDMS to begin with.
MS SQL Server, however, has the dubious distinction of being the host for the fastest-spreading worm in history.
Short answer: Gimmick.

Sure, it has nothing to do with the lack of commercial third-party titles.
Okay. Can you name a porn group supporting it?

Christ. You do know what it means to make a joke?
Remove your fingers from the computer and mouse, approach the door, open it, and step outside. Remain there for a while.

So now we're AGAINST copyright infringement?
My head spins yet again...
It wasn't a quotation. It was a phrase in the submission that Michael put in quotes to mock the subject of the submission.
See the AC here who posted an example.

Microsoft has been a significant shareholder in Apple since 1997.
Microsoft sold those shares years ago (their loss, since AAPL's stock is outperforming MSFT's...).
