"If he is able to realize how much of his time is being wasted waiting around in an online game where all of his "accomplishments" are ultimately meaningless. " I'm not advocating addiction but couldn't you say all or at least 99% of accomplishments in real life are ultimately meaningless as well?
College is more about students learning to adapt to other learning environments and not the other way around. In a lecture class with 300 hundred students Professors don't have time to tailor their class to each individual students ideal learning environment.
There are certainly non-jewish cultures that place as high a value on intellectual development; one need only look at Germany before the 1930's. Even there, Jews were overrepresented in academia as well as in the musical world. That said, I still think Jewish culture and the fact that Ashkenazi Jews have historically been located in urban areas does play a significant role why there are so many Jews in academia but I don't think that it can be the sole factor for the reason listed above. Nearly a third of all nobel prize winners of the 20th century have been Jewish despite the fact that Jews make up very small fraction of the total population. Ashkenazi Jews have the highest average IQ of any ethnic group.
"Ashkenazi Jews also perform highly in correlated areas. For example, while only 0.25% of the world population is Jewish, Jewish scientists make up 28% of Nobel prize winners in physics, chemistry, medicine, and economics, and have accounted for more than half of world chess champions.[13] In the U.S., Ashkenazi Jews represent 2% of the population, but have won 40% of the US Nobel Prizes in science, and 25% of the ACM Turing Awards (the Nobel-equivalent in computer science). A significant decline in the number of Nobel prizes awarded to Europeans and a corresponding increase in the number of prizes awarded to US citizens occurred at the same time as Nazi persecutions of Jews during the 1930s and the Holocaust during the 1940s.[14]" Wikipedia
So overall, I think Jews are generally blessed with high intelligence, the right type of upbringing for intellectual careers, and also being born in urban environment where there are more opportunities to pursue intellectual careers. I also think there is a bit of in-group nepotism going on here as well. I predict that in the future Jews will continue to excel but there will not be quite such a huge level of overrepresentation as other ethnic groups like East Asians have more opportunities to pursue careers in science etc. Secularism will probably win out in the end and these current ethnic groups merge with each other and become less relevant.
The point is that there are races and it's not just nurture but also nature that has an impact on how well one will do in certain endeavors. Ashkenazi Jews are smart because of the environmental conditions they had to undergo in Europe. Just compare the ratio of jews/non-jews in a university to that of jews/non-jews in general population to get what I mean. Or also compare jews/non-jews ratio of nobel prize winners to jews/non-jews in general population.
Compare the ratio of jews to non-jews in major universities to the ratio of jews in the general population over non-jews in the general population. Do the same thing with nobel prize winners and get back to me.
I have few qualms about downloading anything. That said I did that more as kid when (A) I had no money and (B) I had a lot free time to spend. (A) is still true for me today as a masters student but (B) is not. Will I download again? Yes, because copy protections suck, and it's so much easier to download then drive through traffic to store, wait in line order, drive back, and it's faster then ordering stuff via amazon or whatever. Unfortunately it doesn't look like will ever have much of (B) again.
I think that while it's obvious to anyone that turning up the music too high will cause hearing loss I don't think it's too obvious knowing how what too high is. I think if they made mention that too high = a volume that makes you unable to hear conversation going on around you that many ears would be saved.
I'm surprised this is the least of crimes committed by people who's jobs have been cut due to outsourcing. I could very well imagine a scenario of a person long established in a company getting fired due to outsourcing, not lack of skill going nuts and burning the company headquarters down and murdering all the company executives. Why hasn't this happened yet?
Yes it does, I'm happy to find someone who has a similar point of view. UN is worthless, US is in the Dog House, and Israel is going to have to fight their own wars. That shouldn't be a problem as that tiny nation fended off attacks from multiple nations at once.
I haven't noticed anything revolutionary with this new xbox 360. If anything you might call it evolutionary with enhanced graphics but aside from that the games don't appear to be any different from the long line of games that preceded them.
"Their sense of time spans centuries and millennia rather than decades." Right, so it was China's plan to allow the European powers to bassically take over their country and introduce opium to the population in the 18th century.
Eventually I think it will be the Chinese population that changes China's government for the better. With economic growth comes a higher standard of living and leisure time, and with more free time comes desire for more freedom and demand for better treatment.
I would just like to advocate using Foxit Reader 1.3 for pdf viewing. It is less then 15 megs total install and it starts up instanteously as opposed to adobe reader.
This tendency doesn't apply to females only. If you look at how the ideal American male image has changed he has gone from looking like a normal healthy male body to the hulk.
I don't know about you but when I'm "thinking" I'm often speaking in my head so I don't see how that is so much different then speaking out loud. I've found sometimes just speaking a thought out loud helps me move further on an issue then keeping it internalized.
The question I would have is how much vegetable oil do we have to process into biodiesel? It's a great idea but if everyone started doing it would we have anywhere near the amount vegetable oil required to power the millions of vehicles on the road?
I've heard there are some people who drink urine. Just get some of them at your office. I suppose I could oblige them if they opened they're mouths hehe.
I don't think researchers have anything to worry about allowing their articles to be freely available because due to their inherent dry and academic style no one but scholars, unwilling students, and the occasional phony intellectual will read them. Seriously I pity those non-scholar/professionals who choose to use their free time reading these journals.
We should liquidate the RIAA Cartel.

Not much more.

You think engineers have it rough? Just look at what professional classical musicians have to do just to survive.

Ah I'm happy UM my Alma Mater. It's definetly a top notch research school.

China will always need to rely on exports. Do you expect the Chinese to start buying products at the rate that American consumers do?

Most people aren't deconstructing and analyzing a social situation like you are.

Let me guess, the person who modded me down was an offended urine drinker? Come on it was only a joke.
