There is nothing unethical about moving jobs overseas. This may be a harsh pill to swallow but it is true. These people in poorer countries need a job much more that most people in the developed world.

People do not complain that they are able to buy cheap goods. If you want to may I suggest that you go and pay twice as much for your products. Me I will pay less and be happy. You may think that these people are being exploited and some of them are but many are happy to have a job with a real salary.

At the end of the day we live in a global economy and that is that. By opening jobs in poorer countries you are helping the people there. Look to the histroy of a country like England that had an industrial revolution and for a time the conditions were bad but things started to improve. Now the quality of life is much better and most people have jobs. The same thing in post war japan . They went from a totaly destroyed economy and infrastructure to a manufacturing giant and are now settling down and getting all the prolems of the west. Korea is still on the up. India has just started. Good luck to them I say.

"People like her only care about bettering their own bank accounts." And you give all your money to charity and good causes!! There is nothing wrong with making money providing you use it to buy things. This is the whole idea of the capitalist economy.

Before you ask I have lived on both sides of the Iron Curtain and know the difference.

The reaction from people about the jobs going abrad is jus the same nationalist-protofascist crap from all the people who complain about "them" comming over "here" and taking all the jobs, women, social security.

Many I suggest a history course, you will learn that we are all immigrants!

  7. Re:Why region encoding in the first place? on Blockbuster Chief: End DVD Region Codes · · Score: 1

The reason is as simple as it is stupid. The studios have carved up the world into different regions for distribution. Now Universal makes a movie in the US and distributes it there. BUT they may get 20thC Fox to handle all European distribution and Abdul Faisal Studios to supply the middle east. The problem is if I in europe want a DVD and Iu buy it from the states then 20thC Fox has lost a customer and will complain to Universal that they have the distribution rights but others are selling on their turf. Now imagine that in the middle east the with cheaper dvds starts shipping to the US. Universal is losing sales and profit in its home turf.

Basicaly the problem is that region free does n ot match the bussiness model of the studios.

You were joking but you are not far off. We scientists do much research with public and charity money. We then submit a paper, must pay some of the costs of the printing, and then to read it must subscribe to the journal. (OK, some journals are free). There are several campains going on in the scientific community to get all journals for free, but this is still far off.
There are many great papers that I would like to read and must resort to ,
    a) writing to the first author and asking for a copy,
    b) get a copy for the British Library for around 20EUR,
c)buy a single copy from the publisher at around 30EUR each paper.
I host on my website some of my papers and am breaking copyright law by doing so. THe way I see it I have no choice. If some young student wants to work in my lab and they want to see what we do and to study before the interview how else can they read this work. ..my 0.02EUR anyway

Just because you call something a cruise missile does not make it so. Without a warhead it is no different than a plane. The guy is clearly doing this as an intelectual and technical challenge and should be lauded for this fact. The real interest of this work is his jet engine and his tiny budget. As far as his tax situation he should not have got into this trouble but at the same time it is very unusual for a tax department to bankrupt somebody who is actively making repayments. Let us not forget that 9/11 was perfomed with two jet liners not cruise missiles. Good luck to him and hope his Xmas gets better.
