OK, first, I know this is way offtopic, but I just HAD to share this revelation with the Slashdot community. You guys are not gonna believe this.

OK, now most of you have seen the move Billy Madison, right? Ha ha, that movie kicks some serious fucking ass. Adam Sandler is like the fuckin' man and shit. Now, you remember the part, where Billy (Adam Sandler) is all hungover, and he sees this GIANT FREAKIN' PENGUIN runnin' around and shit? Oh Christ, that part is awesome. So anyway, there's this giant pengiun out there, in the middle of the blistering sun, which is like SO OUT OF FUCKING CHARACTER that it's just WHACK FUNNY. It's just this huge goofy MOTHERFUCKING PENGUIN!! It's all like ... WOW.

All right, all right, so anyway, when blitzed little Billy sees this, and it's all hot and shit out, right, and then he says like the funniest fucking line in the movie, OK? Oh man this line ROCKS. So he's all like "It's too damn hot for a pengiun!" HOLY FUCKING JESUS THAT IS SOME FUNNY QUALITY ADAM SANDLER SHIT RIGHT THERE! "It's too damn HOT for a PENGUIN!" Oh MAN, I was laughing so HARD right there and people in the theater were like THROWIN' POPCORN and shit at me so I was all like "HAHAHA FUCK YOU ALL! You dipshits don't apprecite Adam Sandler like I do!" and this one bitch was all givin' me grief and shit about "being disruptive" and "ruining the movie" and shit, right? So I'm all like "Spray it out your blow-hole, whale-butt! Your GIANT ASS is being disruptive and ruining the movie for ME!" and then I threw my empty soda cup at her and it fucking nailed her in the back of the neck but the cup wasn't really empty, see it still had a bunch of ice in it because you know after I finished the Pepsi I started to crunch the ice because it gives me something to do and shit so now I didn't have my ice cup anymore but damn if I didn't wang that fat slut nicely with it.

Wait, whuh, where was I? Oh OK. So yeah, Billy is all like "It's too damn hot for a pengiun!" and I'm just like hearin' this over and over echoing in my mind when suddenly I get like one of those, uh, moments of Claritin? Like on the TV or something? No wait, it's like a revelation or something. So then, I realize that this Adam Sandler line is an allegory to the current state of enterprise IT solutions! NO FUCKING WAY DUDE, you're saying, THAT IS SOME WHACKED UP SHIT but I'mma be all like "SMACKTARD you gotta listen up!" and shit right? OK so here is how I see it:

When he says the "too damn hot" part, well, what is HOT? THE SUN, that's right, like SUN MICROSYSTEMS. And since, like, SUN in Latin or Mexican or some shit means SOLARIS, right, so the "too damn hot" part signifies the Sun servers and the Solaris operating system! OK OK OK, now wait, this next part is going to BLOW YOUR MIND. OK, so then the "for a pengiun!" part, well, I mean, THAT is like SO FUCKING OBVIOUS that that even that burnout Ronnie down the hall would figure it out. The PENGUIN is representing Linux! I think it has to do with that Linus Torvalds or something, and he like wrote the kernel and he looks like a pengiun or some shit, but right, anyway. So it's like "too damn hot" for Linux, because Linux gets SMACKED THE FUCK DOWN by Solaris. And the Linux pengiuns HATE Sun, becuase it's all COLD at the North Pole right, and Linux knows it gets OWNED by Solaris and Solaris is all like YEAH BITCH THAT'S RIGHT WORD TO YA MOTHER.

So ADAM FUCKING SANDLER is forming like a COMPARISON between ENTERPRISE OPERATING SYSTEM and is proving CONCLUSIVELY that Solaris and other enterprise OSes will forever rule the server market. I know like everyone on Slashdot is just like all fucked up and shit about Linux but when ADAM SANDLER says something HE FUCKING MEANS IT and that means that Linux is failing and Solaris will forever dominate.

Book Reviews: The Maverick and His Machine

Posted by timothy in The Mysterious Future!
    from the punch-cards-and-raised-floors dept.
roomisigloomis writes "The Maverick and His Machine begins with a paragraph that sounds like the first line of a film noir: 'Thomas John Watson began his life at age 40, after Dayton, Ohio, nearly ruined him.' From there, what one would expect to be a stuffy, boring book about a dead white man turns out to be an interesting and inspiring account of The International Business Machines Company (IBM) and the man who started it. Why would a geek care? Because IBM, its technological breakthroughs and Watson are very much the foundation of commercial technology as we know it today." Read on for the rest.

    Building A Better Package Manager

Posted by CmdrTaco on Tuesday February 10, @12:05PM
    from the something-to-think-about dept.
SilentBob4 writes "Adam Doxtater of Mad Penguin has published a preliminary layout for his proposed cross-distribution package manager capable of adding/removing software from any locale. He is suggesting the interface will basically allow for installation of several major package formats including RPM, DEB, TGZ, as well as source code with the ability to pass build time options. All of this will come at the price of standards of course, including naming, documentation, and package structuring. If this idea were to catch on, it would signify a major leap in desktop Linux usability. This might be a project that UserLinux might benefit from. Read the full column here (complete with GUI mockups)."

Yeah, yeah, I know, I'll be lynched for saying that Bill "I am Satan" Gates should be on par with RMS, ESR and Linus, but think about this for a second.

Bill founded what is now the largest software company in the world, and wether or not you agree with him, he has made a important contribution to the computing industry: Microsoft brought desktop computing to the home user.

Now, be honest. How many of us had our first computer experience with MS-DOS or Windows 3.1? Do you think that if computers still consisted on thin-client-server models based on huge VAX mainframes, that Joe and Jane Smith would be able to dial-in to AOL and connect to thousands of people around the world? Would the Internet have blossomed into the vast information network it is today without the aid of easy-to-use software from Microsoft? How about Grandma who wants to set up a webcam so she can chat with her grandchildren? She doesn't want to have to sit and hack kernels for hours. She wants Plug-and-Play, baby.

Look, disagree all you like, but thanks to things like Windows, Office, and MSN, modern computing has been made easy and affordable to everyone, thanks to pioneers like Bill Gates.
