Megaman? I mean it's one thing to make bad box art for a bad game (read: rival turf), but Megaman was a classic.. and the cover art, well.. check it out: ack!
So you judge art by the means that it is distributed? You have effectively cut yourself off from a huge chunk of amazing music. I'm an idealistic person but art is not a commodity like any other. I'd love to only support labels that are in political agreement with me, but I simply am not about to give up Miles Davis, Coltrane etc when these are artists internationally recognized as some of the greatest ever and to me are unmatched.
Ever take a blind listening test between 'indie' music and non-'indie'? I'd be curious if you could tell me which is indie, and if it makes the art itself any better. But I'm guessing you aren't really that into music if you have shut yourself off from so many wonderful artists.
The reason a lot of self described 'hacker types' have a hard time socializing is because they are so afraid of going outside of their circle off knowledge. Try reading something totally non tech related.
Some of my favorite literature is by Russian authors. Check out Chekhov or Gogol. Especially Gogol!
Gentoo Linux is an interesting new distribution with some great features. Unfortunately, it has attracted a large number of clueless wannabes who absolutely MUST advocate Gentoo at every opportunity. Let's look at the language of these zealots, and find out what it really means...
"Gentoo makes me so much more productive." "Although I can't use the box at the moment because it's compiling something, as it will be for the next five days, it gives me more time to check out the latest USE flags and potentially unstable optimisation settings."
"Gentoo is more in the spirit of open source!" "Apart from Hello World in Pascal at school, I've never written a single program in my life or contributed to an open source project, yet staring at endless streams of GCC output whizzing by somehow helps me contribute to international freedom."
"I use Gentoo because it's more like the BSDs." "Last month I tried to install FreeBSD on a well-supported machine, but the text-based installer scared me off. I've never used a BSD, but the guys on Slashdot say that it's l33t though, so surely I must be for using Gentoo."
"Heh, my system is soooo much faster after installing Gentoo." "I've spent hours recompiling Fetchmail, X-Chat, gEdit and thousands of other programs which spend 99% of their time waiting for user input. Even though only the kernel and glibc make a significant difference with optimisations, and RPMs and.debs can be rebuilt with a handful of commands, my box MUST be faster. It's nothing to do with the fact that I've disabled all startup services and I'm running BlackBox instead of GNOME or KDE."
"...my Gentoo Linux workstation..." "...my overclocked AMD eMachines box from PC World, and apart from the third-grade made-to-break components and dodgy fan..."
"You Red Hat guys must get sick of dependency hell..." "I'm too stupid to understand that circular dependencies can be resolved by specifying BOTH.rpms together on the command line, and that problems hardly ever occur if one uses proper Red Hat packages instead of mixing SuSE, Mandrake and Joe's Linux packages together (which the system wasn't designed for)."
"All the other distros are soooo out of date." "Constantly upgrading to the latest bleeding-edge untested software makes me more productive. Never mind the extensive testing and patching that Debian and Red Hat perform on their packages; I've just emerged the latest GNOME beta snapshot and compiled with -09 -fomit-instructions, and it only crashes once every few hours."
"Let's face it, Gentoo is the future." "OK, so no serious business is going to even consider Gentoo in the near future, and even with proper support and QA in place, it'll still eat up far too much of a company's valuable time. But this guy I met on #animepr0n is now using it, so it must be growing!"
Agreed. This game is simply incredible.
While for me doom was the creepiest game ever created, the intro you get when you start a new Super Metroid game is just incredible. Particularly the music.
What exactly would be the negative consequences of funding OpenBSD despite the fact that the project leader is anti-war?
Is he going to sabotage the project? Oh, wait. It's open source. Is the media going to grab on to this and criticize the administration? Oh wait, no one knows what OpenBSD is except geeks, and probably nearly as few know what DARPA is.
I think it's really incredibly egotistical of Theo to think that his rinky dink comments about the war caused a shift of millions of dollars. Get over yourself Theo.
Theo really lost a lot of credibility to me when he took money from DARPA.
Really, what kind of person takes money from a political body which they detest? Ever hear of integrity Theo?
Fortunately we can easily use our own encryption when dealing with digital communications (which yes, much of the phone system now is).
The next frontier? The government labels all users of personal encryption as terrorists and implements huge legal restrictions on the use of encryption.
The real question is when will encryption become a Bad Thing in the eyes of the general public?
When will using any sort of encryption however trivial in form or use cause a knock at your door?
The real problem I see here is that we are creating a methods by which a government member can know absolutely anything about anyone at any particular point.
Now what if we (meaning the US) mistakenly elect government officials with very bad intentions?
It HAS happened before in democratic countries, and I will neglect specific examples in order to avoid Godwin's Law.
I don't necessarily fear what our current government will do with these technologies. I DO fear the prospect of a group of rogues using an infrastructure that we implemented for evil.
I really believe that it is necessary in a free society to maintain some methods of secret communication. All revolutions which resulted in a better society required channels of secret communication that were unheard by 'Big Brother' as some may say.
Didn't you read the post?
"I have a very weak eye and..."
I'm sure you'd be bitter had you only one eye too.
I guess that will learn me to read tfa next time. ;)

So what about music that ISNT current? Do you bow down and buy from the big labels? You totally avoided my point.

Could people start spending more time doing something interesting with their computers than simply decorating them?
artie lieks teh anelz!!!!!!!!!1
Um. You act like it is some sort of secret that the Vorbis team is working on a video codec. Wtf?

Upon first reading this headline I thought it was referring to http://bonsaikitten.com
The RIAA and MPAA are NOT government organizations.
That's pretty scary that some now think they are.
Sigh.
Agreed. Incorrect usage of "it(')s" is preventing us from attaining the utopian society I have always dreamt of.
Is there really a usb coffee pot?
I would be interested.

Actually I was going for the Funny moderation.
This is a smart idea. If BSD is dead.. Terrorism is dead.
Props to the administration for this revolutionary terror fighting tactic!
Because if BSD is dead... terrorism is dead.
Props to the administration for this astute observation and logic!
Don't blame me, I voted for the other guy.

Yeah, because we all know if the government says it's ok, it's moral.
