I had read somewhere (someone correct me if I'm wrong) that this was the impetus of the novel. There was a bet involving Burgess claiming that he could teach a reader enough words in a language to be "technically" fluent. I don't recall what the yardstick was, or what the strict definition of "fluency" was or is. Just something I recall reading, I think, in the forward to the British edition (which also has a different ending).

William Faulkner (the sound and the fury)

Beware. If you have spent the last few years reading Gibson considering him a "treasure" to the english language, then attempting to digest "The Sound and the Fury" could cause you physical harm. One of the greatest books written, this is not light reading. Could sprain your brain right before it expands your horizons. For those of us who enjoy brain sprain through literature, this is near the pinnacle.

"As I Lay Dying," also by Faulkner is one of my favorite books.

"Darkness at Noon" by Arthur Koestler is another brilliant read (kind of along the lines of Orwell's 1984) set in 1930s Soviet Union.

Even if that were not true, I find simplistic and offensive the equating of anything that people think is violating their rights as "Naziism". American Greetings, whether or not their suit is moral, are nowhere near Nazis. It's amazing how many people here (both those apparently trying to be as offensive as possible and those who are not) are referring to "Africa" as if their incredibly broad, overarching statements could possibly apply to such an enormous region. Africa is a continent made up of different countries made up of different regions, cities, tribes, towns, etc. This virgin sex cure for AIDS did happen. Still happens. But it doesn't happen in "Africa." As far as I remember this was reported in parts of South Africa, a country in Africa about as different from other countries in Africa as you can get. A country that has been about as fucked by colonialism as you can get. So, to say that "yes, that happens in Africa" is essentially meaningless.

Check out the Peter's Projection map for a decent picture of how big the area being painted with a single brush is: Peters Map

I don't pretend to understand the cultural intricacies that can lead to dangerous behavior (unprotected sex), but have you looked in American high schools lately? We don't use condoms over here as much as we should either, but the disease is not as prevalent as there so our odds are much better.

Yes, education is going to help and we as a country should do more to help, but there is a lot more going on than just ignorance. Sometimes Americans (and Europeans for that matter) need to jsut shut up and listen to the people they are trying to help. Our solutions don't always apply in other countries. And a solution that works in South Africa might not have a snowball's chance in hell up in Algeria.

So there's my contribution to the derailment of the original posters thought.

Note that I am not saying that using the program correctly is a bad thing, just that the only time I use it is when someone didn't clean up their code the first time. After numerous revisions, I don't find the code cleanup to be 100% reliable.

I've been working on a stack of revisions involving lots of subscripts. Your logic is flawed. Spending millions of dollars on promotion can make up for a hell of a lot of lack of talent (Anyone remenber the Spin Doctors? Ever hear of Avril Lavigne?). Promotion expenses gets passed on to the band. Labels will never allow artists to sell CDs at shows because they can't track the sales/trust the artists to report them correctly. Sure, if you're not on a label you can sell your own CDs, but then you're one of those bands who you claim don't deserve money.

The bands you refer to are such a minority, it makes using them to support a blanket arguement unjustifiable.

Hootie and the Blowfish made a lot of money touring, and they suck...a lot.

Bands sign to labels who pay for everything up front. CD sales and concert sales all go to pay this back. If you take away what bands make in CD sales, the label will just take more of concert sales. Bands absolutely do not make money touring. Most just make enough to keep the tour going, some, not even that.

I'm not saying don't steal music. I'm just suggest that you try harder to not delude yourself. Be honest with yourself.

Personally I have no problem with stealing music. I also have no problem with a single license that would cover my right to download all I want. I'm not against paying musicians money. I just have no delusions of how profitable it would be for any but the very tiny minority to make a buck selling direct.

If you're talking about independent artists, then I feel that you are being even more idealistic. You have quoted figures of 10,000 people at a concert (all buying CDs? HA!) which eliminates the vast majority of bands anyway. An independent band with no promotions budget will not have even 1,000, likely not even 100 people, at a show. How many CDs would a band likely sell at a 100 person show? Maybe 4 or 5. That's not even enough money to eat and gas up for the drive to the next town.

Most musicians don't make money at all. Don't fool yourself. Tell youself the truth and decide what you want to do.
