Why is it that slashdot is getting involved in politics? shouldn't slashdot be focusing on matters of tech, stuff thats important to nerds? STUFF THAT MATTERS? who cares about politics? lets discuss the latest thing that could be made into a beowulf cluster or debate on what would happen if we were in soviet russia or even ways of making PROFIT! politics are BOOORING and not really what (i thought) this site was aboot.
If you wanna discuss politics i'm sure there are 100s of other sites for that type of stuff
politics is derived from 2 words "poli" meaning "many" and "tics" meaning tiny bloodsucking insects
To use XMMS! XMMS is a wonderful media player
XMMS is a multimedia player for unix systems. XMMS stands for X MultiMedia System and can play media files such as MP3, MOD's, WAV and others with the use of Input plugins.
XMMS is mainly targeted at music playback, but through thirdparty plugins some rudimentary video capabilities exists, but there are much better systems other than XMMS for video support.
XMMS will not be vulnerable to this exploit...it is Highly customizeable and it has an extensive plugin system.
Winamp is (currently) being run by AOL which as we all know is evil and heartless...after what they did to poor rich justin. poor poor justin.
I've not seen it mentioned anywhere, so maybe it's just a drive incompatibility issue, but when I installed SP2 RC1, I could no longer play DVDs - I would receive an error telling me that the TV OUT on my card must be disabled first.
I rolled back to SP1 and bingo, everything would play fine again.
In the wake of stories like this, and last year's story about RSA-576 being cracked (here [slashdot.org]), is this a message that we need more secure forms of encryption than we already have? RSA is great so far, but how long until 1024 is broken? Or any other schemes, like the MD5 hashing that's used for digital signatures?
Topics that people with lots of credentials behind their names are going to have to solve. Keeping ahead of the crackers is a big concern not only for security of transactions, but for personal privacy as well.
The suits who run the studios are so disconnected* from the techies in the render farms that such issues never enter their brains.** And to big-corp-think, of course, free software -- free anything -- is an abomination and unclean anyway. Understanding this, IMO, is key to understanding everything from the [MP|RI]AA's reaction to piracy, to Microsoft's reaction to Linux. In their perfect world, you pay for everything; more specifically, you pay them for everything. The idea that anyone might be able to get useful stuff for free wakes them up in screaming nightmares. This is not rational cost-benefit analysis. This is a clash of worldviews as fundamental as Galileo's with the Church.

* I'm not claiming any special insider knowledge of how Hollywood studios work. This is my guess based on my experience of how big corporations work in general.
** If they have brains. Or hearts. Or courage. All of which are highly debatable.
The more organizations deploy Linux, the lower the cost will become for further deployments.
For example Munich will use VMWare while slowly porting their special Win-only software to Linux.
The next generation will do without VMWare and will lower the cost to migrate to Linux.
Oh, and I might add that 5 cities in Bavaria are also thinking in joining Munich directly.
Also, in 3-4 years, if any hardware company will want to sell hardware to Europe or Asia, it will have to provide Linux drivers which will be beneficial for ALL Linux users.
Don't beleive that stuff, Be more cynical.
Bush is allocating 1 billion a year for the moon and Mars. Impossible.
In return, NASA is being asked to give up the Hubble, the Shuttle, the Space Station (eventually). And funding for all other programs will be cut or eliminated as well, "for the Mars mission".
The "Mars Mission" is twenty years in the future. It will have to survive five administrations, ten Congresses, and the eventually bankrupting of the Federal kitty by the tax cuts and increased non-discretionary spending.
Point is, the "Mars mission" won't survive. I've watched the space program for thirty-five years, and things like this don't maintain momentum, especially in hard financial times.
NASA, I hear, initially was jubilant; now they realize what they are being asked to give up: everything. For a pig in a poke.
You are being just cynical enough. This is a way of disbanding the manned program while looking like heros, or "spatial pioneers", as Bush called them (I am not making that up).
Five years from now, NASA will be all but gone, with a few contractors making a bit of money researching new systems that never make it to reality.
I didn't believe it would happen so fast! Hubble already given up?
I only wonder if Bush is smart enough to have thought this up himself, or if his Grand Viziers came up with the scheme while telling George about Mars and "Spatial Pioneers"? Does the King actually believe what he is saying? Is he that dumb, or that smart?
And these comments are "flamebait" if you are a far-right whacko, kids.
I'm not laughing.
Apple is a monopoly only to those who wish to purchase Apple products (which is a single-digit segment of the market). Virgin, on the other hand, controls all these record labels which are all involved in an organized scam of the public for cash...15 bucks for a CD?! thats insane! If anyone is abusing a monopoly its Virgin and their weird CEO branson.
From the site, YDL will
"Bridge the gap between Intel and Apple, between x86 and PowerPC. Once you have become comfortable with the KDE or Gnome desktop, you can sit down with any Linux computer and feel right at home.
Linux will be around for a very long time. It may change, grow, expand, but it will most likely never die. No corporation (even Microsoft) can halt the production of Linux as everyone has the opportunity to offer improvements, to help it become better than it was. Linux users will never be in the position of finding their OS is no longer supported."
This is cool! Basically it allows you to keep all your existing stuff (from what i gathered) and move to a completely different and (in many people's opinion) better processor architecture, not to mention fancy keyboard/mouse with cool looking box/monitor. Question: Can you dual boot it though? because OSX is so damn pretty and it has X11 to support some linux st0ff.
If the DEC VAX systems are so antiquated, wouldn't it make more sense for businesses using these systems to simply upgrade to newer/better technology? I mean even if they have incredibly stability and "wow" factor, wouldn't it be easier than both solutions just to upgrade the software to newer systems. Uptime on many linux/unix systems are just fine for most usage, and QNX has their real time fail proof operating system, but I doubt people using VAX would even need something that powerful.
Why would he post pictures of himself on a random website? Something isn't right. OR maybe he's just REALLY stupid, which is definately a possibility. Either way, I think that the Slashdot club people are probably quick to judge him as a scammer. Once we've completely de-bunked his claims, then we can call him a scammer! I think that judgement based on one guy who set up a website with all these reports of scamming could be slightly biassed. Not to say that this man isn't a slimy scammer, just don't beleive everything you read, including this guy's site nor the other guy's site.
I find that battery life has been a big deal with new handhelds from nintendo, the gba and gba had excellent battery life, I hope I can expect more of the same out of the DS.
I'm concerned that with higher performance will come lower battery life, which greatly limits the portability of the devices.
i mean honestly,
With hollywood bitching at just about every single technological advancement these days all in the name of protecting their flawed and old-fashioned business model, could we really expect them to sit idly by for something like this...don't even pay attention to their crap and maybe it will go away.
Thats not to say you shouldn't buy the movies, but if you have Tivo content thats yours, why shouldn't you be able to transfer it to whatever medium you desire?
Sorry, thanks for calling me on that one, i thought it was widely accepted
Here you go:
The proof!
From the article:
". faulty 'memory cards' in the machines caused the 16,000-vote disappearance on election night. The glitch was soon fixed," he wrote.
The machines ARE unreliable.
The problem with E-voting is that there's no trail as the article suggests, how can we be sure that a vote cast for someone hasn't been tampered with. Given the importance of the decisions being made, I think it is unwise to trust a method that has been proven unreliable. It leaves too much room for uncertainty. In this particular instance I don't think that the benefits outweigh the risks.
For that price you can get several decent quality LCD TFT monitors and a Dual-view Nvidia card going, which is pretty nice. Movies on one screen and work on the other;). Linux support is sketchy for dual-view in my experience, but it'd probably work if you follow the instructions! either way, this is likely only cool if you're doing some sort of digital photo/movie editing.
think about it: spammers start trying to catch each other for the bounty, and then they form these massive spamming groups (read gangs) that join up to get the bounty on other spammers...then you end up with a smaller group of REALLY powerful spammers...i gotta stop playing Mafia...
Telus needed to do something, I know from experience that this is a serious problem. 16 dollars for some call to africa i never placed, I had no idea about this stuff, fortunately Linux is immune to these things. Here's an idea: Don't hook up the phone line to the computer unless you plan on going online. That way if one of those stupid dialers fire up, its evil plan will get foiled.
Yes, this is cool, but its just the way they are presenting the data, it won't work for common people like us, think about it, some granny receives a bill like
100000000000.00
She'll go nuts and it won't work. I assume the power companies could use this to make all sorts of bills, like a paper bill, an electronic bill etc from the same XML file, but i assume they have a similar system in place already

Doesn't IBM still have patent time remaining on GIF and what about that Sonny Bono thingy? couldn't Unisys come back and get the patent again?
