When you say that you see open networks, do you mean that you see them open or you've actually been able to connect to them? I ask this because I had to setup someone's router to be open but only accept the connection of his Mac note book using the mac address because no other way would work for me. This means that when others are looking at the network they will actually see it as open without any security but in reality it will not permit to connect.

I'm certain the answer to that will be no in most cases as is the the situation with one of my own neigh boors but just wondering.

Incidentally, only one out of 5 networks around my house has no security features enabled. Maybe people in some areas are more aware than others?

Should it be normal to have the product replaced after barely a year or two because it is not the latest thing out there?
Seriously, do old players play mp3 files any less than the newer devices out there?
Does the sound quality degrade after a certain amount of time?
If the goal is to play music on a portable device then this thing should just still work after 2 years. Devices should not be breaking down so much and attests to the shoddy workmanship of the company that makes them.

If the goal is to upgrade every few years and create waste for the landfills, upgrade to you're hearts content.
Bottom line for me is that I should not have to pluck down a few hundred dollars for a player and have to buy a new one a few years later because of a hard drive failure.
If I want to buy a new one because I feel the need to have video features on a portable device, that's one thing, but I should not have to get a new player just to do the same thing I was doing with my original player.
My Zen Extra is doing well for me. It doesn't have any video features but it does the job fine after a few years and seems to be going strong. I do feel like having the latest gadget sometimes but that's not the same as saying that I have to change because I am not satisfied with the product or that it's defective.

The thinking from these individuals are that being on the net is getting they're computers full of viruses, getting them exposed to hacker attacks, risk of identity theft and so on. It's a trend that has worried some companies because they worry that others might follow.

So the question is, are these people getting off being taken into account in the growth of the net?

  8. Lack of access + competing shows? on Trek Producers Will Provide World A Break · · Score: 1

I think it's alot of problems rather than just one thing that hurt Enterprise from being a success. For one, the lack of ability to access the show. I live in Montreal, Canada and I don't have cable because I can't afford it. This had not stopped me from watching shows like Voyager when it was new or Babylon 5 (even if it was at a crappy time slot). I was even able to see Deep Space Nine on fox (in reruns) from the states even if the signal was terrible. Enterprise on the other hand has only been available on Space (Canada's version of the Sci-fi channel) and from what I read here, not much else then UPN in the states carry the show. I don't know about the states, but here I have access to Andromeda, Outer limits and Doctor Who the 1st and second of which I consider utter crap but just love Doctor Who BTW (thank you CBC).
I suspect that other regions have access to different Sci-Fi shows as well. Add to that the fact that there are other types of sci-fi shows out there like StarGate SG1/Atlantis and BattleStar Galactica and you have alot of factors to figure out why Enterprise is doing poorly. Give the audience access and you'll end up with more accurate ratings as opposed to people having to resort to bit torrents to get access because too many that would watch Enterprise just aren't going to want to bother to use such methods and will simply settle for whatever crap is on and accessible (like Outer Limits which used to be good but went downhill since).
Meanwhile shows like Survivor or The Apprentice do well because you just need good old regular TV with a tuner to see them as opposed to paying for expensive cable services that a lot of us still can't afford.

I don't see anything in the article stating that Roger's doesn't want to stop file swappers.
I also don't believe they think they would loose customers as a result of this. It's more a fear of legal actions against them for divulging information that's keeping them from doing the same.

If Videotron succeeds, I'll bet the other ISPs will follow soon.

And where would you have them leave to go to? Bell with they're slow connection and terrible billing mistakes? Or maybe they should go with AIE or Colba Net or some other smaller DSL ISP. But wait, aren't they just using Sympatico's DSL network?
In some cases, they don't have a DSL option since Sympatico doesn't offer the connection to as many areas as Videotron does. I know more people that are pissed of because of Bell's loosy service than Videotron.

I also recall how much business Bell lost when they tried to place a download limit on customers which was worse than videotron's and jack up the price on top of that. People look and react a lot more at changes to they're bills then they will to the fact that a company is handing out they're personal information because no one believe that they are doing anything wrong. They'll change they're minds when they receive a letter of cease and desist demanding them to pay a sum of a couple of millions in restitutions.

Just because videotron is the first to decide to give up names doesn't mean that others don't want to.

Lot's of reasons to not use Bell's Sympatico.

Slow connection, nowhere near the speed of Videotron for one. They haven't been able to offer me a stable connexion in my area which is pretty urban. They can't provide to many resident's either who are stuck in a monopoly with videotron as a result.

I stopped using sympatico the day that they decided to cap the download limit to 5 gigs (which at the time was less then Videotron) and increased the price. I know they came back on that policy but not before losing a huge amount of customers and I'm still not ready to forgive them for it.

Lately, Bell has had numerous reports of billing errors across they're entire business and that's just scaring people from signing on and driving customers away as well.

Don't know if they still do it, but I for one have no interest in paying a 10$ a month fee for renting they're DSL modems. Can't understand why they didn't have an option to buy the modem or use one that I might have owned myself.

That's all I can think of right now but I'm sure other reasons exist.

They must have also learned earth's english language because they talk like they just came from there. How else would they have ended up with common names like William and Lee Adama or even Laura Roslin?

The people that did the old BSG show had at least the common sense to try to use a few terms such as centons and yahrens instead of hours and days to try and make it sound like they are not people of earth and the use of single names while a little strange, still made a difference.

If there is one thing the US does well, it's recreate shows rather then import them.
Many films that have been made in the US are simply remakes from some other country.
The Ring being a good example of a foreign movie that never made it to the big screen in the states (at least not in major theatres as far as I know). Hollywood made it in a way that people from the US will be able to accept and ended up doing something that didn't quite live up to the original.
Interestingly enough, the US version probably got more exported thoughtout the world than the japanese version so I think it's a big loss for the global community.
This is not the only instance that can be mentioned. I believe that a US version of the french movie Taxi is currently being produced. Is it really that hard for americains to accept a taxi driver rolling around the small streets of Marseille? Must it really be happening in the streets of some city like New York for the average americain joe to accept it?
Why is it that hollywood has such a great resistance to movies that come from outside the US?

Yes there is the rare occasion where a foreign film will make it in major cinemas but I can't remember much passed Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (or much before it either).

Since we're talking about anime here I think that if US animation studios took they're shows more seriouly like Hollywood does for it's movies, Japanese animation would never have gotten it's foot in the door here. I've met TV producers of animated shows here and they simply feel that it's best to make the shows as cheap as possible so as to make a quick buck rather than try to make something good.

Not that I am trying to plug this product but after having bought my Nomad I came across an article that talked about a huge flaw with the I-Pod which is that the battery cannot be removed and that Apple will replace it for you at a price of around 250$. In other words you not only not get a discount you also have to be prepared to pay alot more further down the road.

After reading that article I really started to appreciate my investement in the Nomad player even if the interface isn't as good as the Ipod's wheel and software. It took a few days but I found ways to navigate it.

I'm not telling you to buy the same thing I did, I'm just telling you to really look at what you are paying for before putting down alot of money. Considering how much you pay for these products, I think it's really worth taking time to find the right product for you than just getting the cool looking one. To me it was more important to be happy with my player than to have the wow factor.

    Hope this is useful.
