The are probably numerous avionics / warfare packages that are not nor ever where on this plane. It's a show plane; they didn't just pull it off the flightline and give it a paint job. It probably has numerous mods specific to its uses as a show plane. And to say something as ridiculous as they would not pull classified off prior to sale needs no comment at all. Get real.
No, it's just that simply by posting the copy of a story that *has not been slashdotted* is just plain silly. The whole system of karma points is rendered silly and useless by giving points jost for posting a story anyone can get by following the link. Silly.
Other than that, no, I really don't care that much. Got a life, you know, if I want to see the story I'll click on the link. Otherwise I'll just go back to masturbating in my office with the door closed like all the other slashdotters.
Because the people who refuse to register are doing it for ideological reasons, not practical reasons
Jesus. Get off it already. Ideological about WHAT? No paying for stuff, free-loading off the rest of society? They are not even asking you to pay. If you are against doing or giving something for something, then please oh please, come to my house and clean my toilet, I will not feel obligated to give you anything.
These people STILL infected with MyDoom don't know the first thing about computer security.
You make some excellent points. And, *why* should the average person *be* an expert on computer security? Why *WHY* should average users need to hassle with patching their box every *fucking* week? I've resisted the Mac for years (price has kept me away), and now have several Linux boxes in addition to my Win boxes, but...
It's obvious that windows is NOT the perfect OS for clueless newbie users
Linux just isn't there yet for those who can not or don not want to deal with security issues and such. There is a big trade off in ease of use for the *average* user. Lack of software and difficulty installing software is still a big issue. Sorry, Apt-Get and RPMs still don't cut it with the *average* user.
And the answer inevitably leads to little or no marketing...
And dependency hell that exceeds.dll hell...
And a very inconsistent and often difficult application install process...
And applications for general consumer and business use rather than just for developers...
And driver / peripheral issues...
There are some very basic usability issues that need to be tackled before Linux can seriously be considered for consumer marketing (please don't bring up Lindows, it's crap).
I think you're right on this point, take for example the silly little patents that IBM pulled out of storage in the SCO thing. These days patents a stock piled as leverage later down the line.
I had a math prof who was possible the most inept and awful teacher I had ever had, but he was a good person, know his field, and when I took advantage of office hours, he walked me through calculus person to person, and I passed.
Most students who complaine do not take advatage of office hours, and just thought it would be an "easy A". Fuck them, they need to be dropping frys.
I took a honors chem class, and spent HOURS with the prof who just happended to be the head of the department, no one else took advantage of his time.
"Thats the result of Microsofts terrible history on security. Please Mr.Gates, continue to help the Linux community thrive."
It would be great if this where only so, but it seems that there is one factor in corporate IT that over rules security, and that's an "enterprise" quality office suite and desktop, two things that seem to be moving quite slowly. Very few question Linux in the server market, but the PHPs will not give up Outlook and PowerPoint untill there is a superior linux analog.
By the way, recall that Linus himself predicted the corporate desktop is still 10 years off.
From the story: "Microsoft, which learned about the flaws more than six months ago from researchers, said the only protective solution was to apply a repairing patch it offered on its Web site. It assessed the threat to computer users as "critical," its highest rating."
So, if they fix a security flaw sooner than six months, what status does that get? Super Double Critical?
"But maybe that's because the words I am making spelling errors in aren't in MS's dictionaries anyway"
Did you know that you can add words to the default dictionary and actually download specialized dictionaries?
"And the nagging feature of correcting words starting with two uppercase letters always gets into the way while writing program or other technical documentation"
Did you know that you can change that feature in the options?
"When it comes to Outlook and Exchange I barely use anything outside blank text via SMTP"
Hey, I'll bet you love Pine, yes?
My point is, many of the "features" that you don't like are enabled because most people *do* like them, but that does not mean you can't take a few minutes to configure Word the way you like.
"Back when I was in college at BGSU [bgsu.edu] and the method of checking email was telnet to one of four different SunOS servers to use Pine..."
Back when I was in college we checked e-mail by spreading glass shards made from POP bottles all over the all-purpose room floor, then having the bare-foot freshman spell it out word for word in binary. We couldn't afford a POP equipped mail client, so we had to use broken ones.
Why do they keep saying safty issues when it's clear that it's a money issue? Did "safty issues" prevent them from replacing the whole damn camera and flawed optics? If this type of work will not be done in space due to "safty issues", maybe we shouldn't even be in space? Did anyone ever suggest that the manned space program was as safe as walking down the street?
Of course the Hubble has nothing to do with mining ore on the moon or planting an American flag on Mars, so who knows... Could it all be politics? NASA: GWB's little whore.
Most people do not buy stock in IPOs for any other reason than to make money. This is simply the fact. So perhaps no dividends, but the stock price must continue in an upward direction. Note the sleazy actions of the SCO people to float their stock price, an extream example, but non-the-less something that happens.
Unscrupulous coder? No, just incompetent. Posting credit card numbers to some hacker site is unscrupulous; this guy's just too stupid to do his job. But look at this part of the MSNBC story:
"It's not likely all those visitors unzipped the attached database, but there's no way to know how many did, according to RentACoder CEO Dan Ippolito."
This company is so damn stupid they don't know how to check their logs to see how many times that file was downloaded,
why does 'going public' always equate into 'after this they must try to bring in all the cash they can in and sell their souls to the devil too!'? you know they don't have to have a businessplan like that!
Because by "going public" their corporate offices sole responsibility becomes maximizing dividends for the stockholders. I don't agree with this formula, but it's as simple as that.

This thing is a toy. It has no application other than that of a toy. "Big Name"????? Big name in WHAT?
Emachines? Respectible? Good lord! You must be kidding. Put down the crack pipe!

I wonder if even the Swedish Bikini Team on the side of a Compaq box would help much.
I think you're right on this point, take for example the silly little patents that IBM pulled out of storage in the SCO thing. These days patents a stock piled as leverage later down the line.
Or maybe they should sue SCO, who, after all, owns Unix and Linux...
Blaw, blaw, blaw... Yes, yes, we know. But to the corporate bosses, Outlook and PowerPoint are indispensible. You're preaching to the converted here.
Most students who complaine do not take advatage of office hours, and just thought it would be an "easy A". Fuck them, they need to be dropping frys.

I did not take spelling.
And Excel. The OO spreadsheet still needs a lot of work.

Chances are high that if someone downloaded it, they took a look-see...
