The book follows a Russian homicides detective who is drawn into a sensational set of murders involving sables. However, on the fringes of the story, he also discusses "normal" homicides as well. There are other little bits and pieces of regular Russian society as well. The book was written in the 80's, and is well regarded.
Oh yeah. Read "Gorky Park" for an accurate description of run-of-the-mill Russian homicides (not the ones the book is mostly about, but is some discussion of "typical" Russian murders as well).
Don't they get it? The reason the 17-34 crowd is so hard to reach with advertising is we're sick of being reached.
Successful ad campaigns beg to differ. The 17 to 34 age group continues to be the most self absorbed hedonistic me-me-me material object driven consumer group. Advertisement companies don't spend billions of dollars on things that don't work. I'll bet you yourself own many consumer goods (got an iPod or "just" a vanilla MP3 player?)
You'd probably avoid Orgrimmar. Also, since that's a vital city to play as the Horde, you'd probably end up quitting.
I don't believe this. Although I don't play video / PC games at all, I have observed that most "gamers" will put up with quite a bit of bullshit in their games (from what I hear, there was quite a too-doo about Steam's various policies, but gamers kept playing...). And advertisers do a lot of research, if they are not concerned about having gamers drop out, it's probably not an issue.
I think for the movie industry, the dropping business has more to do with high prices for crappy movies on tiny screens. Than again, though I don't play video / PC games at all, I understand from reading Slashdot that there are quality / price issues here as well.
Oh come on. It's no more annoying than any of the many other trolls and LAME jokes here at Slashdot, and certainly LESS annoying than the Gay Nigger thing (and certainly less offensive). It's also less annoying than all the questionable "editing" that goes on here, what with all the dupes and crap stories. Learn to mentally filter out trolls and none of them will bother you, your blood pressure will be lower, and your quality of life will in general be higher. Just let it go, that's the price you pay for surfing a public forum.
I bet that the poster's idea is that one can run mission critical financial software on commodity hardware with Linux.
One can do many things. Some of them are not recommended. Like running "mission critical" applications on commodity hardware. Not a good idea, and any serious financial house probably doesn't. I don't think I would want to run my investments through a company that runs "mission critical" applications on vanilla boxes. Just not a well thought out idea.
1. The Air Force, at least, has "standardized" all non-scientific work on Windows (yes, I work for the USAF). I think that the "Government Sector" is more or less in Redmonds pocket, the boys from Washington State wield a lot of power with the boys in D.C.
2. What do the support stag's do, exactly? They "service" the colonels...
It's not surprising that Linux is only making inroads in the server market; it is simply not user friendly in the way that most computer users define that concept. In addition, most of the Linux applications out there, regardless of what all the tech-savvy geeks here say, are difficult for most computer users to install. The Linux community's resistance to GUI installers and GUIs in general is also a major block. The Linux market share will grow beyond server when Linux geeks start to understand that not everyone wants to know the details of how a computer and OS work.
As was stated above (and below?) Google was not first with maps or sat pics. The only thing this takes from the Google book is draging and overlays. AND, the Microsoft sat pics zoom in CLOSER than Googles.
I know that everyone here will jump on your Bash Microsoft wagon, but you ARE mostly wrong.
I don't think that who these guys take money from has much to do with anything, they ALL take money, both sides. There are NO politicians in Washington with altruistic motives, they ALL do it for money.
He can "seek" anything he wants, but that doesn't mean anyone will take him seriously, or that he'll get it, I don't think the "law" supports that kind of fishing. Much about nothing here, there are a ton of nut-cases in Washington from Texas...
I don't think using Gimp and Apache for your example works. Apache is widly accepted by those who in general don't buy into the Open Source "paradigm", and Gimp is simply "not ready for prime time", just is nowhere near the professional quality that Photoshop users need.
I think most of the people involved in the horror stories aren't the designers.
I think this is true. The people that ea_spouse was talking about are more or less the low level cogs in the machine, the nameless hord that do the bidding of the true designers/stars. But my guess is to become a designer/star, these are the positions that you must "claw, kick and scream and push" and back-stab through. My guess is that if you don't want to do these things, you really are not agressive enough to be a designer/star.

He was very rotund, plump as a Pirozhki...

If you pay for current games now, you very likely pay for games with ads, you just don't realize it. Product placement...
People who use the term "WinTel" in casual conversation and on Slashdot are generally pompous asses. Mac user? Check!

I believe the joke is that Netcraft confirms it, or something like that.
Yes, well, look what "editor" posted the "story". Typical Slashdot.
And this has WHAT to do with running Linux on HP servers?
Hahhaaa... Haha ha haaaaa...

My guess is that serious financial is not done on run-of-the-mill "commodity" hardware.

What about IE-7??? I hear that with the Explorer, it's going to be a Linux/Firefox killer! Not just "standards complient" but embraced and extended!

Given that he's a known nut case , not much chance at all that it would have any impact at all on their funding.

Amazingly, this is the sign of good chili as well.
