Ten thousand for a 1 day trip plus all the training, etc.? Twenty years? Fifty years? Think how far we've come in the last 10 years w/computers. Space technology hasn't progressed much and it needs to take a leap soon. I really hope it's within reach for us all before we're gone. I think it will happen because of all the commercial interest that is generating new and creative designs. I'd like to be in Star Fleet at some point.
The FCC is the government's way to get their paw on and claws in everything. Communications equipment, VoIP, etc. Back doors everywhere, wouldn't you think? How do we fight these lobbyists since they basically control our law machine? It's ridiculous - Al Gore needs to make a PowerPoint about lobbyists, their money, and their control. He seems to be doing a decent job of spreading important messages. Thank goodness he created the Internet!
...just like they came through with killin' SPAM... I use Outlook and I still get tons of junk, plenty of which is caught and moved to JUNK, but plenty of which is not. Brilliant filters too, they know that I can read those spanish ads... or those hyroglyphic messages... BRILLIANT! I hate Microsoft with such a passion for their evil ways, their complete lack of interest in WHAT WE WANT, their inability to create safe software, their lack of understanding that integrating their shitty browser in to Windows is just a huge mistake... lose the antitrust battle and nothing changes... waaaahhhhhhhHH! OH YEAH... who agrees that M$ had old buy Netscape and then let it get run in to the ground? MS couldn't buy it (that'd be anticompetitive) so they got their 'partners' at AOL to do it for 'em! Right?!
I also do on-site services for a living and I was talking about this very issue today with a customer. Their hard drive crashed (seems to be happening with a LOT of Dell's drives lately) and we were reinstalling. I was telling them about how I believe our OS or software will come through the pipe, no more local boxes. They said "well then you're out of a job!" and I said "no! then I finally get to what I wanted to in the first place, set shit up and show you how to use it!"
Giant's product is great IMHO. Symantec is a joke, AVG rocks. I'll consider aVast thanx to another post. Microsoft releasing an anti-virus product..... are you kidding? THEY CAN'T BE ALOUD TO DO THIS. Isn't that a big conflict of interest? Isn't this obvious to all? Is the government going to do something on behalf of the people / the industry? Completely frickin' ridiculous.
I try to tell people to go Mac at every opportunity (it's part of my schhpeel) but it's a hard sell, espeicially for the older folks like my stop today. Learn how to open/save/navigate all over again? I bet a quick demo or a loaner Mac could do the trick... too bad Apple doesn't work with the little guys. I'm just waiting for OS X off the shelf for any Intel system.
I wish this guy wasn't annonymous because I'm right there with him.
STOP 10 Make Me Sick LIST
01. Microsoft
02. Symantec
03. Who cares, I really hate those two.
I forgot about this in my first post, but you can get the same function from Orb.com. My friend got me to purchase a PocketPC 6700 through Sprint (amazing device, same old Micro$oft problems) and their Vision service allows me to log in to the Orb site. With the Orb software running on any of my computers, I am able to have access to all of that content while mobile. Pretty schlick.
Like so much else in this industry, it's a bunch of hype with no real meat. Now that Intel can't sell their stupid processors based on numbers alone (not much gain from a 1GHz to a 3GHz) they're trying to pull this crap. Hyperthreading is a frickin' joke, there's no software that can take advantage of it (including Windows). I hate Microsoft. I hate Intel. I hate you. Good day.
I am currently driving my car, but I'm looking to switch to a bike before my stupidity kicks in. I was curious if anyone has switched to riding bikes, and, if so, did you forget how to drive your car?
I agree - Intel's numbers game that they've been playing for years makes me sick. There are so many other bottlenecks that need to be addressed before pouring on more processing power. Hyperthreading is a marketing joke, dualcore is a marketing gimmick, it's all a joke!
sounds like a reasonable plan, i agree with ThreeE though, they need to get people out there first - baby steps!
after the unknown debris hit the wing on columbia, i knew in my heart there was disaster ahead. they brought the shuttle back in without special consideration to the take-off incident (or at least any that we know about). i'm worried about this flight too, our ancient shuttles are kind of a joke and a blemish on NASA and our great country's space exploration.
i will soon be starting my moon real estate company...
I'm such a gadget/wireless fan. I've been hyped about Bluetooth for 10 years. They said it wasn't going to get a foothold, but I'd say it's here to stay. v1.0 was slow but worked, now we've got v2.0 (in Apple's latest products of course, they're support is so critical). People never understood what BT was for - short-range and low bandwidth. Mice, keyboards, game controllers, headsets (!! still no good ones though).
UwB is great because of it's radiowave penetration. It can go through a lot because of the spectrum it uses. WiFi degrades easily. Same w/BT. So there's a use for each technology, but not enough support and cooperation beteween vendors. Microsoft's first BT keyboard/mouse had a BT adapter w/a USB dongle for seperate use, but it didn't support any other BT devices! They fixed it in SP2.
Another thing, when are we going to coordinate __THE PEOPLES NETWORK__ and connect our personal WLANs together to form one big network? I heard about somebody near me in Parma, OH that was trying to get a PING from here to Cali through consumer WiFi networks links together. I like this idea. With WiFi/cellular phones coming out, that'd be great.
I charge $45/hour for home users and $75/hour for businesses, both of which I feel are below what I _could_ charge. I want to be valueble and affordable, so I haven't changed things.:) I never go flat-rate because I'd be killing myself that way. Normally a serious clean-up with take 3 hours ($135 for a home user) or a less-intense clean-up about 2 hours. Where are you located?
FireFox | Thunderbird | AVG | Ad-Aware | Spybot | HiJackThis | ZoneAlarm maybe, but it causes enough heachaches that I'm happy with SP2's firewall
I've got a slick little business runnin' in the Cleveland, Ohio area. It's strictly word of mouth and I'm amazed at how well my name is spreading. I call myself a headache manager becauase that's basically what I do - fight viruses, spyware, and hijackers. I started the company to train and help people learn to use computers better, these days it's just a fight to get the computers in a usable state.
Off topic, anyone else out there take the next steps from a single person operation to a 2-3 person tech services company? I need to hire another tech and an office manager, but I'm a geek, not a very good "business person".
I got goose bumps just readin' your mention of the opening theme. Anybody else associate the Fox thing at the begging of movies with every Fox movie they've seen since?:)
"We've created one of the largest, if not the largest, hot spot in the world," says Larry Baer, Giants executive vice president and chief operating officer.
Don't think so Larry Baer. You're in a one-block stadium. Case Western Reserve (in my hometown Cleveland) has what I believe is the largest public WiFi network. It covers university square and most surrounding areas.
Betting on every play... cool! (I don't gamble though.) Multiple camera angels (long overdue) is a great idea!

I mean, a kilowatt is cool, but only REALLY cool people mess around with plutonium, gigawatts, and guys named Biff.

That wasn't a bug, that's just how all Symantec products work.

I bet this software doesn't do anything evil to the PCs it touches.
