Paywall went down ages ago, and I probably was one of the few paying subscribers. I thought it was great, and it still is. Now all that greatness is hidden behind their atrocious frontpage layout. Worse than a paywall...
Proprietary wireless network, closed platform, proprietary file format? No thanks.

Bluntly put, Patrick Moore is a paid consultant for the mining, logging, biotech and energy industries, and putting him out as "ex-Greenpeace" is a lot like calling Scooter Libby an "ex-Hill staffer." Moore is indeed more significantly described as founder of Greenspirit Strategies Ltd -- a firm that, if you are a company in the extraction or other environmentally damaging industries, can "assist in communicating your issues".
Indeed, it saved my wrist. I use the large one, optical tracking, and works perfectly for office operation. No scrollwheel (get an upgraded keyboard for that). About $50 on Amazon.
Why is this moderated as Funny? The article is very well researched, which is quite a rarity given the subject matter and the state of investigative journalism. You should really read it, but it is not (yet?) available online.
Market ok for SW in San Diego, but if you are an ASIC engineer you might as well give up and move.
As for CareerConfused: it's all about perception. If you believe the job market is tight, then don't expect a new chair (I bought my own); if you believe GWB defended our country well against terrorists, then let's elect him; and so on... Reality is overrated.
Talking about the "signing spree", I do believe is going to be legal now to purchase needles and syringes in CA without a prescription. Hopefully the spreading rate of HIV and hepatites will be affected a bit by this.
Get the Director's Cut edition, not the one that hit the theatres in the US, or you get stuck with Harrison's voiceover throughout the movie describing what is going on on the screen...
My guess is that ThosLives drives a Celica GT-S, quite a rare combination of speed, fun, and fuel economy.
My POS Ford Focus ZTS with 4 spd auto does not do any better than 24mpg (mostly freeway). That, plus a large amount of other problems with the car, have forever estinguished any interest I had for domestic cars. Toyota, here I came.
DVD playback under Windows (sorry!) it's fine; AC3 ok, too. Video quality is a bit poor IMHO (not very sharp).
XVID, DIVX are fine, too, but software AC3 decoding will result in many skipped frames and video/audio desynch. For some reasons, the hw Dolby decoding is active only when using PowerDvd or WinDVD playing a "real" DVD. Go figure.
I am the not-so-proud owner of a VIA M10000 motherboard.
The CPU is barely equivalent to a Celeron 600, the video quality (s-video) is quite low, the control panel (Windows, sorry) for the surround sound is brain-damaged, and the tiny fan is much noiser than one would expect.
That board does not come with any sort of hardware monitor app, and I had to replace the CPU fan with a larger, slower one to cut down the noise to the originally promised "whisper" level.
Not a bad board, but if fails to meet any of the expectations it sets in its specs. Make sure to read the hardware reviews, and buy from a seller with a money-back guarantee.

The release on the net of recent movies has more to do with executives, critics and other showbiz figures having to feed their nose-needs, more than with teenagers armed with a Hi8.
"For your consideration".
If you are like me, you bought TurboTax2K3 unaware of the "activation requirements", jumped through any hoops Intuit wanted, and then mailed for the rebates.
And if you are like me, you got a card from Intuit (sent to a mangled address that only resembles mine, and delivered only because a very sharp mailman handled it) stating that you forgot to submit the UPC code and receipt with your rebate (while all along you have been holding on to a photocopy of the perfectly completed rebate form).
Needless to say, the web service for checking on rebate status just states that my is still being processed and should arrive soon...
Intuit disregard for its customers does not stop at limiting the use of its software, but it extends to other aspects of Intuit's business.
As noted already, contempt for customers' needs and poor-to-none service will only result in the shrinking and final demise of a company that allows greed and stupidity to run the show.
Next year, I'll just download the crack. Instant rebate right there.
Much as I like (and support) the EFF, I could not be more upset to know that they do not have an office in DC.
The reality of lobbying is similar to that of VC financing: if your startup is not within a 10 minutes drive of the VC office, forget about fundings...
Moderate this one down, please.

And so begins the countdown to the privatization of NASA. Halliburton? Bechtel? Anybody?
Apparently Slashdot just became a sarcasm-free zone. Either that, or UK wit is misunderstood over here

Additionally, be prepared to deal with "concerned parents" asking you to police their children activity over the net.
