Back when I visited Hawai'i in the '70s it wasn't at all unusual for there to be lines painted on the sides of buildings showing the high water marks for various tsunami. I'm surprised that the people in places like Annapolis haven't done the same thing, unless I've misunderstood what you posted.

  9. Doesn't have to be registered, just certified. A registered letter is for when you're sending something of tangible value. Not only is it insured, it's kept in a locked drawer when not in transit and every time it's moved, it has to be logged. That takes extra time and it costs. A certified letter is for when you only have to be sure it's delivered and it's treated just like any other until then, when whoever accepts it has to sign for it and you get the receipt back. A resignation letter has no monetary value, so sending it certified is sufficient.

My understanding is that summer temperatures like this are quite common in Death Valley. The reason most people aren't aware of this is that the National Weather Service ignores Death Valley because otherwise, they'd have the highest temperature almost every day in summer, and most people want a little more variety in their news.

I don't want to start an OS war, but under Linux (and other *nix variants) you can put all of your sensitive data on a partition that isn't mounted at boot. Use an innocuous name for the mount point and actually have some appropriate files there, and unless your laptop is being examined by a Linux geek who looks through /etc/fstab and gets curious about why that partition's not normally mounted, nobody will ever know the difference.

Classics are mostly only classics because they were good when there was less competition.

No. Books become classics by outliving the era they were written for. Treasure Island, written in 1881, is still popular today. The Rover Boys Series, written between 1899 and 1926 is almost forgotten today because it was too much a product of its own time for today's boys to relate to. That doesn't mean that it's a bad series, just that today's boys would find it hard to relate to the characters or even understand their attitudes.

My personal opinion is that that shouldn't have been his call. He should have passed the results of his investigation over to the proper people and let them decide. Then, if the decision was not to prosecute, his hands were clean. As it is, there are people who say that he closed the case for partisan reasons. Personally, I don't know his motives, but it does make me wonder.

  23. ...one that best the pants off the US.

Ha, ha. It is to laugh. Neither the VC nor the NVA ever beat the US in the field. Even the Easter Offensive, a massive invasion by the NVA in 1972, resulted in huge losses of men and material for them and gained them nothing but tiny finger-holds south of the border. They only "won" the war because the anti-war movement here persuaded the politicians (falsely) that the war was unwinnable. I realize that this isn't what your history books say, but trust me, because I was there on the Gun Line helping beat them back.
