I donno about designing a whole new OS. For me, its more in the interface. I'm using stuff from www.phidgets.com (I'm not affiliated in any way other than being a satisfied customer) to build a simple interface for playing music on a PC. That is, physical buttons to control the app. Few other tweaks and hacks allows for navigation/selection of the tunes.
Certainly, a whole new OS would be great, but is it really needed?
