But surely, they did wait until North America was in full view for the image? If not, who would recognize the Earth, after all?
Did you know that whenever Earth appears in "2001: A Space Odessey" North America is always pointed toward us--even if this means that it's high noon at the north pole? I guess Kubrick didn't want his audience getting confused.
So are audiences in the US really that uncouth? If so, why?
No, not really. In the past year I've seen probably fifteen movies in the theater and never had a problem. Either this guy's in the wrong part of town or he's just a yammerer.
I agree with the poster who prefers his movies on a huge screen with "ass-whipping sound."
It might turn them on to the idea of thinking for themselves, though.
Mbutu: Whoa. Plato sez this is all a shadow of some higher plane of existence.
Kwasa: Die Hutu scum!
Unfortunately, just this very possiblity is threatening to those who are now profiting from their ignorance.
Mbutu: Whoa. Marx sez the capitalists exploit the surplus wealth from their employees. Adam Smith sez each person has the ability to trade freely in the marketplace to maximize his or her advantage. Why am I digging these diamonds for foreign robber barons again?
Kwasa: Die Hutu scum!
"Think about the power of bringing our library to little schools in the middle of Africa."
Mbutu: Whoa. Gandhi sez nonviolence is the best way to solve problems. What do you say to that, class?
Kwasa: Die Hutu scum!
Ahh, well. One can always dream, right?

I once talked with one who was able to tell me a lot about my hobbies, my political beliefs, religion and personal life based on three or four simple questions about alcohol, music, and color preferences.
Wow. Fascinating. What were the questions? Is there a web page I could browse? Or is this a demographer's state secret?
This could be better than "What's your sign?" for gathering information about people.:)
No, you hate cars becuase you hate individualism. Like most Leftists (and Christians, for that matter), the finer points of communication evade you. You mock and insult. My guess is that my words struck a raw nerve in you.
Not really, but that's gonna strike nerves in whole bunches of individualists!
I've never seen finer points of communication than those exhibited in this thread.
No, leftists hate individualism, and individualists hate communism, therefore leftists hate communists. Logic!
Oh, and the "it harms the environment" argument.
Oh, it's that old saw. No, we hate cars because cars hate individuals. Or communists. Remember, cars don't kill communists, individuals do. Power to the Collective!
We use both Mac and PC in prepress (preparing digital files for high-res output at a print shop) and so both have pretty high volumes. One day I saw the Windows Update flag in my system tray so I said, "I'll update." Update ran, restarted--and Blue Screen of Death. I had never seen it before--Windows 2000 does okay by me as far as crashing is concerned (there are file system quirks that pop up every now and then and force me to restart, but nothing major). Restart. Blue screen. Restart safe mode. Blue screen. Holy crap. I've got three jobs that need to be output on the PC.
I had no time to fix it myself, so I called a client of ours that does networking and consulting. He came and picked it up and said he'd try his best. Two days later--after re-installing 2000, copying the harddrive to a new one, reformatting, reinstalling 2000 and recopying the data--it was back. With a bill, of course. He told me it might be a good idea to disable Windows Updater. No shit. We had to send our PC files out to a service bureau for output those two days. Screw Windows Updater.
Of course this ignores the fact that the available frequencies are probably already allocated in any given area. Pretty much a bitch as far as local startups are concerned. Maybe once ClearChannel can own as many frequencies as it wants it'll start brokering the ones it doesn't think it needs.
Oh, yeah! It needs them all to make money! Isn't that what they're telling Congress?
And those paragons of journalistic integrity at Fox News can continue their tradition of reporting the stone cold truth, right? You never hear of them publishing a retraction or apology--which means, of course, that they've never been wrong.
You'd think the Sacagawea coins were as heavy as old silver dollars the way people have been talking about the massive amounts of change they'd have to carry!
The point of this regulation was to avoid psychological tricks where prizes like 2.99 would trick more people into buying a product than when it was prized at 3.00.
They can always use $2.95, I suppose. The harder psychological obstacle is the idea of not using 1,2,3,4,6,7,8, or 9.
Here's another fun idea, while we're on the subject of circulating currency--how about getting rid of the penny and rounding everything to the nearest nickel? Another poster mentioned jingling coins being annoying--aren't pennies the epitome of a valueless annoyance?
The problem with the Sacagawea (sp?) dollar is that people hoarded them instead of actually using them in regular circulation.
Wow. I had no idea. Well, see, that's the thing--if they'd stopped printing singles, they could have forced the coins into circulation.
(grouse)
And they could have made it a little bigger than the quarter while they were at it. I know the vending machine mafia was against it but you really need some tactile feedback to determine the coins in your pocket.

What I wanna know is, when are they going to phase out the dollar bill? The Sacagawea dollar coin went the way of the Susan B because they kept printing singles. Coins have a pocket life of 30 years, compared to 3 for bills. If we're gonna spend the time and money in a coin let's actually make it work.

In Mac OSes through 9, the trash has always been in the lower right corner of the desktop. Since Win95, the recycle bin has always been on the left side with the system components like My Docs and My Computer. The copy of XP I saw a couple of months ago had the recycle bin in the lower-right--which might be personal preference on the part of that user, but when I commented about it, he said, "Oh, hey, I never noticed that!"
The absolute worst is people who think Microsoft making their UI more 'soft' was a direct response to OS X. These UI changes don't get dreamed up at the last minute -- they're part of an evolution that takes years.
Yeah, sure, but when the "look and feel" (there's that phrase again) of Windows goes from the NT-look of 2000 to the OSX-look of XP (including moving the trashcan ('scuse me, "Recycling Bin") to a Mac-like position), Occam's Razor points to copycatting--or collusion.
Maybe Apple's interface designers are dipping in both wells!
I got the pdf of the results. It's even got faux-leather first and last pages with Shakespeare's sig on the front. Obviously this didn't cost anything. Those people griping about taxpayers' dollars (or pounds) should sniff some nitrous.
Most of the people I know who feel "buried" either went to colleged that cost ~$19,000 per year or didn't work at all and ate off their loan amounts. I've gone the "high-stress/low-debt" route--work full-time and only put the tuition on the loan balance.
The USA is acting likes it's on a caffine and sugar high at the moment.
As a US citizen, I think that if we focused our unbridled energy on something more constructive like a moon base it might be better for all involved.
Nothing like Shadow of the Torturer and its companion novels by Gene Wolfe. Also props to those who suggested Dune and The Cyberiad.
Whoa. Crisis Mountain. On a green-screen Apple II with those crappy Apple joysticks. Takes me back.
here's a nice link.
If only I could see this with a backyard telescope.

Leftists hate individualism.
Yes. We hate you all. Join the collective. Murp!
Hence, Leftists hate cars.

better yet, start their own.

It's at the bottom of the list of desktop icons

I wanna sign up for the next packet tour. When's Dick Rutan getting his Marz-EZ lander done?
