Well, if your measuring time as money, which is certainly a valid measure, then perhaps, if you have a learning curve before you with Postgres, I could see it. Look, if your a hobbyist, if you want to throw that web site up as quickly as possible, you don't care about the technicalities of data bases, your have minimal security concerns, and just want to "get it done", MySQL certainly has its appeal. I've been able to create some pretty interesting queries using mysql language extensions. But all dbm systems have their own quirks to the language. The main deal with postgres is its a more acid-compliant system than mysql, and psql's transaction processing is much more complete and robust than mysql's. If you're needing a high end, high availability, enterprise level database for the money, postgresql is the go-to dbms. But like I said, if your goal is to simply throw up any old web site on the web, mysql is perfectly adequate.
"You are going to get pretty similar search results with Bing, Yahoo, Google, Live..."
Speak for yourself, White Man. The only thing that even comes close to a google query result set is bing, even then I pretty much use google exclusively; opting for bing if a google search just fails to get me what I'm looking for, as a sort of back up. Even then bing rarely works as well for me as google does. BTW; I keep a link to https://google.com/ on my google page, which works quickly and awesomely if I don't feel like dealing with new features or all the gadgets I have polluting my iGoogle page, whatever.
Indeed, PostgreSQL is such a great system, in a lot of ways its better than mySQL; I'm constantly amazed by the number of orgs that have never heard of it.
Here's a nebulous IT project; how many virtual machines can you nest before the system slows to a crawl or fails? Hmmm... I just might take myself up on that...
'So far I am completely unimpressed with Google's attempts at engaging the modern user. I use a lot of Google's products but none of them are really "engaging".'
I strongly disagree with your general premise, but agree with you with regards to where it has to do with the this/. story specifically. On my first point I use Google as my home page with a number of gadgets that show me the headlines from several sources as well as my local weather and a few stock picks, and etc. I feel naked without it. Wow factor? Nah, but they are kind of indispensable to me at this point. But lets consider the news papers and their utter loathing of Google, their common attitude that society owes them a living, that its perfectly acceptable for everyone else other than THEM to innovate, and your secondary point and I are in complete agreement.
"Chicago is run more honestly (and WAY more efficiently) than many big US cities."
Right. That's why they refer to Chicago-style politics inside the Beltway. Just ask ex-Govenor Blagojevich, Dan Rostenkowski, George Ryan, Robert Sorich, Antoin Rezko (fund raiser for Blago & a fundsraiser for Obama btw), Blago's chief of staff John Harris... all of these Chicago politicians are currently convicted of breaking the law one way or another, who am I missing?
Um, no. We're talking about the Asus E-Reader Tablet which is said to have a release price of $199. RTFT (read the fucking title) of the article if you're not sure about what's under discussion;-)
Um, no, we're talking about the iPad in THIS THREAD. COMPREHEND WHAT'S ACTUALLY UNDER DISCUSSION BEFORE USING EXPLICATES AND REVEAL YOUR TRUE IQ. Hell with your fucking smiley.
Oh, BTW- I never claimed Homer was an "Everyman", that was reaction to the post in which Rimmer was described as an "Everyman". My argument is that Simpson is more of an everyman than Rimmer could ever hope to be.
"He is repeatedly called a madman and a criminal throughout the series. He is a liar, he is selfish, short-sighted and a violent alcoholic and he repeatedly screws over the people he should value more than his own life for the most pitiful reasons without ever learning a thing."
1) Calm down, its a cartoon. 2) You're completely ignoring the many acts of selflessness he has committed. He's saved Springfield numerous times, stood up to Mr. Burns, arguably the show's arch-villain, as many, been quite kind on more than one occasion. 3) Your reaction to suddenly decide not to watch the show after 20 years is bizarre. You're just NOW coming to grips with the negative side of Simpson?
Rimmer IS NOT an "Everyman", he's an effeminate elitist boob with delusions of grandeur. Homer Simpson, on the other hand, is just a boob, but a boob accessible to everyone, and not at all with an air of elitism (excepting the episode where he donned a top hat & gloves and went around as if he were rich. Or the time he had a genius IQ...)
Rimmer is easy to not like. Simpson is likable, depending on the circumstances. Very different characters, but I would venture to guess that fewer people find Rimmer an appealing one. Simply because he's versatile doesn't mean anything. Name a job or a circumstance Simpson hasn't done or been in. Its hardly the reason more people have either heard of him or like his personae.
...some one comes up with something even "simpler." When that happens, and I'm betting it will, developers will drop Flash like a lump of burning, rabid plutonium. Perhaps some easy-to-use html5 toolkit, or whatever.
Small? so much the better. Camera on the back? I'm not interested in chatting up with it, I want it to document stuff. And to top it off it's only $199. Just genius.
We're talking about the iPad, right? Last I heard it was well over $600 for the base model.
Am I out of line by whining that we all should be well over the use of monochrome displays in these devices? When I see an eReader using a monochrome display I think "that looks so last decade...", and the strange thing to me is that it takes Apple and its iPad to deliver full color output? Like its some huge friggin' technological effort to create a tablet device with color; so they get to charge almost $1000 a pop? I don't get it. Am I missing the incredible technological leap that has been made with the iPad?
The Apocalypse, the Communist Conspiracy, The Mayan Calendar, Global Warming, Global Freezing, The Heat Death of the Universe, The Comet Calamity, Alien Invasion, The Super Bug, Al-Qaeda, The Neo Nazis, The Neocons, the Return of the Old Ones, Tesla's Super Weapon, The Collapse of the Dollar, The Collapse of the Universe... I don't quite get why we're still here. We should have been wiped out many times over.
30 of them does not seem cost effective, also I am not sure I trust disks for long term offsite storage.
Doesn't have to be 30 of them, dual layer dvds will hold 8Gigs, I have yet to require more than 2 of them for all my data, period. Granted, that's personal data, your mileage may vary. As for your second point, we're talking classic magnetic tape, right? I dunno...
I could tell you that it's the journey, not the destination that matters. I could tell you that after some time you'd be an expert at electronics and would gain so many different valuable skills.
You can tell me what you like; that fact is I already have those skills- and I would yet gain nothing from building my own internet. I think my time would be better spent building something new. Which I in fact am doing.
But what would you need skills like that for? It's not in your job description.
1) You have no idea what my job description is. 2) I do in fact do all these things, and a few more. See above.
And if your an American the only data you'll make out is the diatribe of an Aussie lesbian telling you how terrible your country is.

Regardless, they appear to embiggen a written language already top-heavy...
"Go Postgres!"
Indeed, PostgreSQL is such a great system, in a lot of ways its better than mySQL; I'm constantly amazed by the number of orgs that have never heard of it.

Ha ha ha!!! Wow, that was a good one. Your a comedian too.

Shall I trot out more stories of democratic shenanigans?
You hear the one about the unemployed man about to jail time for complaining to his senator? classic.
If its in the Huffington Post it must be about a republican senator... Oh look! It is. Well, its only natural, democrat lawmakers never do anything wrong; http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1865781,00.html

Qualcomm says they will ship a full-color, video-capable e-ink device this year.
Got curious so I did a search and found this: http://www.thestreet.com/video/10657741/lenovo-qualcomms-tablet-pc.html#60827716001/. I think I like this.
Monochrome? so are my notes.
Fine for you. Not for the mass-market.

Microsoft has been pulling that kind of shit for ages...
Yeah! The Microsoft AppStore has always much more stringent, arbitrary, and dictatorial in their decisions... hey!
Q: What is the election cycle like there? A: It's a unicycle: ridden by clowns.
Hey! Stop copying the American system!!
