"Implausible premise, implausible technology, and completely ridiculous story peopled by totally unrealistics characters."
Sounds like typical science fiction fare to me. Still, even at the tender age of 15, I didn't buy Michael York as an under-30-something. However, I kind of get the producer's dilemma at that time; the world of Logan's Run by the book is entirely people by children spending most of their time having sex with each other, somewhat problematic in a puritanical United States. Lets see how they do it with today's standards.
"no particular legal reason to presume that once something is in the public domain, it can never be returned to being copyrighted."
When some publisher type with enough money to grease the palms of the "Copyright Committee" in Congress for the rights to, say, Plato's Republic (although why some one would want the rights to that is beyond me, but just sayin') and then you come up with a really insanely great ((c) Apple Computer, Inc.) advertising campaign that uses passages from said work, well, you're screwed.
"Arguably, Schwarzenegger is responsible for the veritable demise of the middle class in California. "
As a Californian, I'll take that argument. You give the office way more power than it has. I would suggest the legislature, through which the Governor must pass all legislation, has done more to harm the middle class than anything Muscleman could do. They have driven all business out and welcomed migrants and illegals with open arms, using our money to give them all manner of free programs, licenses, housing, medical, education, you name it, I wouldn't put a bet on anything they haven't given out using my money to illegal aliens. The only thing Arnold really got done was repealing that ridiculous triple rise on car registration Wilson wanted. After that he's been stymied by everything he's wanted to get done by the Leg. As soon as I am able I'm leaving the state myself, its ridiculous. Arnold had very little to do with it. You need to know what the hell you're talking about before you open your mouth.
Let me correct MY comments by adding that Oppenheimer misquoted the Gita as well; the actual passage reads (11.32): "Time I am, the great destroyer of the worlds, and I have come here to destroy all people. With the exception of you [the Pandavas], all the soldiers here on both sides will be slain."
What John Hasler said, plus, you are aware that the quote from the Bhagavad Gita, which is the source of Dr. Oppenheimer's famous remark upon witnessing the Trinity test, and your not-too-bad twist on it, is a little off, aren't you? The quote is "I am BECOME death, destroyer of worlds." Your sig should be "I am become gerund, destroyer of verbs."
No, I'm saying that its easy and weak of anyone to rest all of the worlds problems on one source when there are much more egregious examples about. What you are doing is pointing to a robber and a thief and claiming "If only THAT miscreant were in prison all the worlds problems would be wiped clean." while several mass murderers are loose and in fact apparently applauded, or at the least, ignored. Iran was seated at the council of Women's Rights at the UN a few months ago. Not a whimper from your lot. Not one.
Youtube has nothing to do with this. This whole history of the last 10 years or so claiming copyrights over links to public content is retarded. Its like claiming copyrights over your phone number; if that were actually the case no phone book could ever be published.
HOWEVER; unlike N. Korea, and China, and all the others, we have people who are actively, and vocally, speaking out against the Gov., and they are not sent to those camps, prisons, etc. That is the part you ignore.
"I want peace on earth and goodwill toward man.
We are the United States Government! We don't do that sort of thing.
Hmm.. while I agree in principal that your statement applies to almost any government, I'm curious to understand why you single out the US gov., when there are many more egregious governments out there. Aside from the obvious target that our government makes by its size, the Gov. of N. Korea essentially holds its populous in slavery and actively seeks to develop nuclear weapons and promotes subversion, same as Iran. The Republic of the Congo and other governmental bodies of various N. Africa nations murders their own people, and China has shown that it is willing to brutally suppress dissent. In light of those realities your statement is simply a pale mockery of a country you obviously jealous of, or owe a lot of tax to.
A video game. Way to actually accomplish something. Here's a little tale about FEMA I heard on the regular news outlets during the Katrina debacle; During the aftermath of the Katrina flooding the sheriff's deputies of hard-hit township located near the gulf went riding around looking for gasoline they could take back to a hospital so they could get its generators started. After collecting a small but useful amount they started back to the hospital. Along the way they met up with some FEMA agents who, under the color of the authority of the Federal Government, commandeered the gas. The one thing they did say was that there were taking all the gas they could find... for...? Who knows. Nothing really rational, I would venture to guess. The deputies went back and found another hoard of gas, but this time swore they wouldn't stop for anyone and would start shooting if they were bothered, by anyone. Good for them. But this item simply illustrates the point.
The obvious flaw in a theocracy is that whomever is in power can decide who lives or dies and claim the decision was the will of the deity. How this fundamental problem with Islamic fundamentalist society is never pointed out is interesting to me. Maybe everyone is afraid a fatwa will be placed on their heads.
Ok, so, what would be the scope of this "kill switch"? All routers in the US? All top level domains with servers in the US? Or is he talking about some kind of global thing? Other nations not even involved in any attack against anyone might have something to say about that.
"Even if the thief knows the algorithm, they would require significant time (an understatement) to acquire enough samples to accurately predict the next number that the server is expecting. So, for all practical purposes, yes, it's random."
Yep, digital security, almost always infallible. When was the last time a digitally secure system was broken? About 15 minutes ago? Well, I'll be sleeping easier tonight, surely.
Exactly. Its so insanely great anyone in their right mind would certainly choose to use it thus Apple are making it mandatory because you'd have to be insane not to use it, wait...

I wouldn't expect any more from a gang of street thugs in business suits.

Whales are so cool. I bet they'd know how to fix the Louisiana BP/Deep Water Horizon fiasco too.
...flat, drab passion meanders across the screen in reaction to this piece. And the crowd goes "Yay."
Don't be ridiculous, of course not.

...give up ownership of your device.
Only if you give up ownership of the money I give you for use of your product. Or; in other words, not in this life.
I wrote Knuth an email once. He never wrote me back.
Shouldn't Boll be PAYING people to download his films? What Ed Wood have done?
