Besides, most kernels are written in C, makes sense to write drivers in C. When some one trots out a kernel in Python then I'll jump on the systems work in python bandwagon.

North American culture is more "protective" of personal comfort and hygiene than most European countries.

You're missing the point a bit, its not a problem with "personal comfort and hygene", nor litigation, its a problem with personal responsibility. The culture is obsessed with finding someone to pin the blame on, rather than instilling any rational sense of personal resposibility for anything. ANYTHING. Nevermind personal responsibility for having caused harm or financial loss. American children are being shown how bad it is for them to raise their hands or ask for ANYTHING, except food. Such people don't make great leaders.

Uh, ok, point taken, but I'm not going to make less money to make a point. Or feel good about myself. I feel pretty reasonable about my life making what I make. Haven't made less than $20/hour for years. I'm ok with this.

Yeah... perhaps I'm not the most frugal of people in the world but I would have a hard time paying all bills and still having cash to put away at 11.00/hour... I would have to give up my car if I wanted to keep a roof over my head. Or I could give up my flat and live in my car I guess.

If you are dead set on working in Asia in an IT role your best bet is to do what has been suggested before and find a US firm willing to send you out there. They simply aren't interested in you unless you can provide a skill they need; ie, native english speaker. I have sent a number of resumes to IT firms in Japan looking for talent and the best I've gotten is a few email exchanges with that stopped cold as soon as they realized I wasn't in Japan. Get an ESL cert and teach English, at least if you're there you have a shot.

  20. Interesting concept with one small flaw... on The Gamification of Hiring · · Score: 1

Sounds very similar to OMG POP, ostensibly a geek singles site wherein contestants play games for the right to woo the game hoster. Members (free reg) can host "game rooms" populated by up to about 5 or other members, and the "hoster" can pick from a large list of games. Popular is a game very similar to "Draw Something" for smart phones. The problem was, at least for me, even after winning a game it wasn't clear to me how to contact the "hoster", nor how to even know that I was inteterested in the user. These "game rooms" come and go very quickly, so doing research on the "hoster" is a bit of a hurried chore. I quickly grew tired of it opting for more traditional singles sites. Interesting concept but not really practical in my opinion.

On a different, but related note, employers who use a complex task/test to filter out canidates put them selves at a disadvantage for a very similar reason; while looking for gigs I recently was asked by one prospect to build a PHP shopping cart apllication from scratch. After spending several hours on the project I got a call from another prospect whoh just wanted me to jump in and get something done. Guess which employer I picked?
