either you're an idiot for not knowing what he meant, or a prick for thinking you have to point it out. i sincerely hope it's the latter.
with that said, you're not alone in your prick-ness. too many loyal slashdotters do this, and it needs to stop. so, readers, join me in letting out a hearty "shut up and read the article!"
when i saw the footage of that hunk of metal slamming into the desert floor, one thought came to mind: they are going to do whatever they can to make it look like they're getting useful data, because this was a very expensive screw-up, not too long after another big screw-up for NASA. sure, it's great to keep scientific purity, but if the scientific truth is "the sample is full of sand" and it means you could lose funding, wouldn't you be tempted to fudge a little?
we at the UCI computer store, wrote a java GUI system for mysql backend... it contains some stuff that might help you, should you choose java as your path. replaced out filemaker with it, and never looked back. it has one feature you might be interested in: a module to parse filemaker-exported XML and import into mysql.
everything's GPL, but i dont really want to post on a slashdot thread for security reasons. drop me a line if you're interested in obtaining the source:

filemaker databases are often used for making back-office type software, to run a small business. this is really the ideal place for a web-app, for a couple reasons. first, you can access it from pretty much any computer. it's also less work for the IT guy, as you don't need to worry about making sure everyone has the latest version of the client software -- you update it on the server, and that's it.
man, it seems like the media keeps coming out with these new "ipod killer" ads, yet most consumers just look at it as non-ipod-trash. well, maybe not, but -- it seems none of these are really hurting the ipod's sales enough to earn them such titles.
how about this: provide source code for free, but charge windows users a nominal fee to download a.exe -- most of 'em wont know how to compmile it, and will pay.:-P
yeah, for all the worshiping my generation seems to do of the guy, i really found most of his movies pretty boring. clerks especially: it just sucked. jay and silent bob aren't really that funny, certainly not enough for 3 movies or whatever... let me put it this way: i won't even *download* this movie.
IIRC, this atrocity was nominated for the Oscars. I don't know what criteria they use these days....
Yeah, not only was it nominated, but Bill Murray thought he had it in the bag or something -- he looked really pissed when they didn't announce him. I've heard he's got a big ego, but come on... Didn't he see the film???:-P
i'd have to agree with you. lord knows i love watching the japanese do what they do best: be wacky....but yeah, the whole thing really dragged on with little artistic value to make up for it. (it was certainly no 2001, it wasn't even napoleon dynamite!) i've heard the explainations already, i just don't think they made up for how slow the film was. then again, i'm only 23 so i guess it's only natural that i wouldn't give a shit about someone's mid-life crisis. they're unpleasant. i get it. so is a root canal, doesn't mean i want to watch a 90 minute film depicting it.
Actually Blade Runner didn't seem all that special. It was a 1940's detective story with a few 22nd century visuals. It is Humphrey Bogart film set in the future with Harrison Ford as Bogart. Rutger Hauer and Daryhl Hannah looked great in the film, the best-looking film for either of them.
Yeah.... actually you're sorta missing the whole ethical/philosophical argument there. It's more than just futuristic visuals -- it brings into question: what does it mean to be human? Replicants are self-aware, have personalities, memories collected over their lifetimes. Why is it okay to enslave/kill them and not people? This is not exactly a unique point in Sci-Fi ("I, robot", "the matrix" series, "ghost in the shell", etc...) In fact, it's not all that new of an idea as it's basically just recycled Cartesian philosophy [one can only say with certainty, that to be human is to be a "thinking thing"]. Nevertheless, it's one of the better films depicting this philosophy. (most notably due the absence of keanu reeves, will smith, half-naked tribal orgy-raves, etc...) I think their depiction of the future is also a very believable one -- how all the languages/cultures are intermingled, technology and old-world stuff side by side, etc. Cowboy bebop does a great job of this.
And of course, to spoil the ending for some -- there's the suggestions that the Blade Runner himself is in fact a replicant. (this was really emphasized in the director's cut) One more way to blur the line between human and non-human. This style of twist ending was completely ripped off in "the sixth sense" and everyone thought it was SOOOOO cool.
My favorite quote from this movie takes place at the very end, as the last of the replicants is dying and reflecting over his supposedly-worthless life --- outside in the rain:
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe: attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in the rain... Time to die.
i've always been interested in homebrew game development.... but $199? for that price, i could buy a gamecube, max-drive-pro, nintendo ethernet card, and datel keyboard. the ideal gc-linux setup, ready for all the low (or high) level programming you want. plus, the hardware's a lot more capable.
yeah, serious -- trademark sillyness like this (lindows, too) is funny. why don't they just call it giggity-giggity-fuck-trademarks-mail.com -- it'll still kick ass.
god, remember the hype when the idea of this "leaked" ? he was all "they will have to re-make the roads for my new invention. future man-kind will build temples to honor my inventive nature." etc etc -- and yeah, for $12k you can go slightly faster than walking, and look like a fscking tool.
yeah, i dont think they could make a linux office simply because of how reliant on windows the current office is. look at how office is on the mac: it's a completely different product, that addresses the same needs. adding a linux version would not be a simple port, it would be a totally new program. is this really worth doing, in a land of openoffice, koffice, and those who dont use an office suite simply to spite microsoft?:-P
ive been waiting for this for a while. much love to fink, but gentoo is just a slick group and it will be nice to use the same package manager on all my unixes.

they're not talking about a game like galaxies or everquest.... "massive" merely referrs to the girth of the trekkie gamers.
this one's better:

this guy sounds like he's watching too much sci-fi. any reasonably intelligent being knows we weren't created by anyone.
does this mean my 2.4ghz phone will crash my computer instead of just my network connection?
serious... this is better than password / challange -- WHY? -m
first, flash pollutes our browsers, now our court systems. sigh.
don't let javascript hide status bar or contextual menus. it's in the prefs.

it's not a port. it's a separate product.
